Christ Church Episcopal October 14, 2012

Opening Song: “Everlasting God” Brenton Brown/Ken Riley

Presider: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!

People: And blessed be God’s Kingdom, now and for ever. Amen!

Song of Praise: “Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow”

Prayer for the Day: Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, that we may

continually be given to good works. Amen.

The First Reading: Hebrews 4:12-16

Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides

soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And

before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must

render an account.

Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let

us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our

weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us

therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to

help in time of need. Reader: The word of the Lord

People: Thanks be to God.

The Gospel: Mark 10:17-31

Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, ‘Good Teacher,

what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good but

God alone. You know the commandments: “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You

shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother.”

He said to him, ‘Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.’ Jesus, looking at him, loved him and

said, ‘You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have

treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving,

for he had many possessions.

Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, ‘How hard it will be for those who have wealth

to enter the kingdom of God!’ And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to

them again, ‘Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go

through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’ They were

greatly astounded and said to one another, ‘Then who can be saved?’ Jesus looked at them and said,

‘For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.’

Peter began to say to him, ‘Look, we have left everything and followed you.’ Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell

you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields,

for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—

houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the age to

come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.’

Reader: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Message

The Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and

unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God

from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with

the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down

from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death

and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he

ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in

glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the

Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Prayer Leader: With all our heart and with all our mind, let us pray to the Lord. For the

peace of the world, for the welfare of the holy Church of God, and for the unity of all peoples; for

our bishops, and all the people of God; for our President, for those standing for public office, for the

leaders of the nations, and for all in authority; for the Richmond Metropolitan area, for every city

and community, we beseech you, Loving Lord.

People: Day by day, Dear Lord, of thee three things we pray:

To see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly;

Day by day…

Prayer Leader: For the good earth you have given us, and for the wisdom and will to conserve

it; for those in any need or trouble; for the aged and infirm, for the widowed and orphans, and for the

sick and suffering; for all who do not have enough; for all employers and all seeking employment; for

prisoners and captives, and for all who remember and care for them; for the men and women of the

armed forces, and all whose commitment to duty and service places them in harm’s way, we beseech

you, Loving Lord.

People: Day by day, Dear Lord, of thee three things we pray:

To see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly;

Day by day…

Prayer Leader: For all who have died in the hope of the resurrection, and for all the departed; in

thanksgiving for the promises you make and keep; for your grace in drawing all people unto you, we

beseech you, Loving Lord.

People: Day by day, Dear Lord, of thee three things we pray:

To see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly;

Day by day…

Prayer Leader: Thank you, Lord, for the gift of Sabbath; for the grace of worship; for the meal

that sustains and emboldens; for your Word, piercing and true. Give us hearts to hear and respond to

you that we may follow you more fully, this day and day by day.

All: Amen.

The Peace

Presider: The Peace of the Lord be always with you.

People: And also with you.

The people greet one another with a sign of Christ’s peace.

The Offering

Offertory Anthem “It Is Good” Ron Kenoly

Song of Offering “Give Thanks” Henry Smith

The Holy Communion

Presider: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Presider: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them up to the Lord.

Presider: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Presider: All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God;

through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things.

You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea; you created all the beings of the earth and

gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing. All you create is a sign of hope

for the journey; and so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all

creation as we sing with joy:

Presider: Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all. Your Word has never been silent; you call a

people to yourself, as a light to the nations. You delivered our forebears from bondage and led them to

a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the

coming of your reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer,

you have freed us from the power of sin and death, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and

revealed to us what it means to be made in your image.

We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to

you, he broke it, gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat. This is my Body which is given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends, and said “Drink this,

all of you. This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the

forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

And so remembering all that was done for the world you love: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and

ascension; longing for Christ’s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed

and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ:

People: Dying, you destroyed death;

Rising, you restored life;

Christ Jesus, come in glory!

Presider: Send your Holy Spirit upon us and these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us

the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit’s power, may be a people

of hope and justice, mercy and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the

fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of the true eternal home.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you

our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. Blessed are you, now and for ever.

People: AMEN!

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray . . .

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive

us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temp-

tation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for

ever and ever. Amen.

Presider: Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us!

People: Therefore let us keep the feast! Alleluia!

Presider: The gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that

Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts, by faith, with thanksgiving. Should dietary restrictions prevent your consumption of bread, gluten free wafers are

available. Please, simply notify the bread distributor when you come forward to receive.

Songs of the Table: “Fairest Lord Jesus” Schlesische Volkslieder

“Above All” LeBlanc/Baloche

“All the Earth” Hayford/Huirua and Ulugia

Presider: Let us pray.

All: Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow

love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt,

faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness,

joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as

to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning

that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Prayers after Communion

A Prayer for All Sorts and Conditions of Men and Women…

O God, the creator and preserver of all humanity, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and con-

ditions of men and women; that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy

saving health unto all nations. More especially we pray for thy holy Church universal; that it

may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves

Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of

peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who

are in any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; that it may please thee to comfort

and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their suffer-

ings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ’s sake.

Amen.

A Prayer for the Human Family…

O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with

compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infects our

hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our

struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations

and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our

Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for the Right Use of God’s Gifts…

Almighty God, whose loving hand has given us all that we possess: Grant us grace that we may

honor you with our substance, and, remembering the account which we must one day give, may

be faithful stewards of your bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer of Self-Dedication…

Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imagina-

tions, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated to you; and then use

us, we pray you, as you will, and always to your glory and the welfare of your people; through

our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Special Thank You…

Dear Christ Church,

I wanted to say thank you for the gracious gift you all gave me and my family last Sunday. It was truly

appreciated. I also wanted to say thank you again for being such a great place to serve and worship.

Christ Church has become for us our church home and I hope that you will think of me as a missionary

that you as a congregation have sent out, to share the good news. Please keep me in your prayers as I

embark on this new journey as I will be praying for you.

Grace and Peace,

Joe Torrence

Year To Date Financial Results As Of 8-31-2012

P & L Summary

Actual Results Through August

Budgeted Through August Difference

Full Year 2012 Budget

Pledge Income $595,563 $646,000 -$50,437 $1,045,000

Non-Pledge Income $232,795 $143,065 $89,730 $231,900

Total Income $828,358 $789,065 $39,293 $1,276,900

Total Expenses $790,766 $899,801 -$109,035 $1,373,700

Surplus/Deficit $37,592 -$110,736 $148,328 -$96,800

Year to date, we have an operating surplus of $37,592 driven by a large positive variance in

Non-Pledge Income. This is partially offset by Pledge Income coming in lower year to date.

Year to date, Total Expenses are $109,035 lower than budget. Roughly $40,000 of the variance

is timing related and will be spent by year end. The biggest drivers of the rest of the variance are

less staff, lower utilities and janitorial expenses.

Thank you for your support of Christ Church and our ministries. Please reach out to me with any

questions or concerns.
