Current Scope:‘To prepare International Standards on methods of measurement of characteristics which are of importance to determine the performance of electrical appliances for household use or of electrical appliances for commercial use and that are of interest for the user. This may include associated aspects related to the use of the appliances and aspects such as the classification, accessibility and usability of appliances, ergonomic characteristics and conditions for the information provided at the point of sale’.

What is TC 61?

The IEC Technical Committee on Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances
Scope: To prepare safety requirements for electrical appliances primarily for household purposes, but also for other equipment and appliances in similar fields where there is no IEC Technical Committee in existence.

History

• 1966 - The formation of TC 61 was agreed at the meeting of the IEC/COA(SMB) held in Tel Aviv in October 1966.
• 1967 - First meeting of TC 61 in New York City – This was also the first IEC technical meeting to be held in the USA.
• Since the TC was formed, the United States has held the Secretariat.
• 2019 - TC 61 celebrated its 100th plenary meeting.
