The concept of mixed seeding (evolutive population) practiced in the Parco Comune, that allows the ground to “choose” which seeds to make grow, overturns mainstream agricultural practice and is also a metaphor for integration between migrant, asylum seekers and local community.

In the artwork the concrete utopia from Castiglione is confronted with the painted words on the banners, inspired by the book News from Nowhe-re or an epoch of rest, a work combining utopian socialism and soft science fiction written by the artist and socialist pioneer William Mor-ris (1891)In the novel, the narrator falls asleep after returning from a meeting of the Socialist League and awakes to find himself in a future society based on common ownership and democratic control of the means of pro-duction. In this society there is no private property, no big cities, no authority, no monetary system, no courts, no prisons, and no class systems. This agrarian society functions simply because the people find pleasure in nature, and therefore they find pleasure in their work.

Luigi Coppola’s installaion, comprised of a video and a series of pain-ted banners, is a visual rendering of a process that has been underway since 2013 in the Salento ara, in Castiglione d’Otranto (LE, Italy) to be precise. Here the artist, together with the local association “Casa delle Agriculture”, has created the Parco comune dei frutti minori: a participatory project that has redeveloped areas used for fly tipping, converting them into cultivated areas focusing on biodiversity and the common good.

LONGTERM PROJECT - PUBLIC ART

PARCO COMUNE DEI FRUTTI MINORI2013- ONGOING

ongoing project developed with Casa delle Agriculture (Castiglione d’O-

tranto, Lecce), in collaboration with Free Home University project,

Parco Otranto - S.M. Leuca, citizens and associations of Castiglione

d’Otranto (Lecce, Italy)

ENParco dei Frutti Minori is a large project for the communities of Salen-to (South of Italy), that hopes to create a safe environment for local biodiversity and a sense of participated care for the land, the soil and our common living. Together with Casa delle Agriculture (House of Agricultures) the artist has organized multiple actions to develop a cultural and social change in their community, suggesting ways to reclaim the land, to work it re-spectfully, envisioning a different approach to the territory, one that can suggest beauty, memory and a different future. Many actions have been conducted to regenerate abused and abandoned land (public and loan for use), to select and reproduce native crops (cere-als, vegetables, beans),to experiment with the cultivation of hemp, and to create a sense of common good, togetherness and solidarity.

L. Representing the thousands of people who work for the environment and common goods across diverse local communities of Brussels, the employees of Brussels Environment (IBGE) will be the protagonists of the closing event of Parckdesign2016.

Contemporary debates around the complex issues of preservation, access to, and distribution of essential resources need to be kept alive, fed by different perspectives and current observations. This is especially important for individuals with institutional responsibilities in this field.

Following a process of collecting musical and text ideas, a choral per-formance will stage the potential debates and paradoxes of the institu-tion: how to think the individual, the employee, the member of a poli-tical authority as one of the drivers of a solidarity movement? And how could the institution be developed into a convergence of thoughts, ac-tions and desires?

A place of exchange titled the Bureau of Precarious Coalition is set up from June onwards in the administrative offices of Brussels Environment to collect points of view and encourage expression. The ideas, actions and texts generated by the Bureau constitute the base material for the dramaturgy of the performance, mixing together harmonies and vocal dis-sonance.

This ticket certifies of your 1 euro share in the  Speculative Fund of Providence 2016. Keep it well because each ticket al-lows you to decide upon the usage which will be made of the entire capital accumulated during the festivals of Santar-cangelo, Short Theatre (Rome) and Terni. Just visit us at our office, follow the proceedings of the SFP at  www.thespecu-lativefund.org  and act upon it also remotely via sms (+39 329 3799558).

The Fondo Speculativo di Provvidenza was launched in Santarcangelo in 2015 by artists Luigi Coppola and Christophe Meierhans. The project’s aim was to turn the festival’s audience into a political community by making all spectators co-owners of a monetary capital and asking them to collectively decide which purpose this money should be used for. By adding a compulsory one-euro donation to the price of each ticket, the Fund succeeded in raising a certain amount of money over the ten days of the Festival. Through participatory processes and voting the spec-tators – having become shareholders – took upon themselves to dedicate their common capital to the development of a performance arts training programme. The second edition of the project reiterates the same basic operation of raising the entrance tickets prices by one euro, but the manner in which the Festival audience will be able to engage with the decisonal process is radically different: leaving behind the notions of majoritarian democracy, the Fondo Speculativo di Provvidenza follows a rather unorthodox protocol. It sets the focus on individual responsibi-lity and gives every shareholder of the Fund the possibility to enact a radical change at any moment of the process by either making, disqua-lifiying or re-qualifying a proposal, independantly of what the majori-ty could be thinking and of the discussion. What is more, the scope of the 2016 edition of the Fondo Speculativo di Provvidenza reaches beyond the spatial and temporal confines of the Santarcangelo Festival itself by expanding the process to two other contemporary arts festivals: Short Theatre in Rome, and the Terni Festival. The Fondo Speculativo di Prov-videnza establishes a link of continuity between these three Italian festivals. It creates relationships of interdependency between distant communities and creates a parallel with the realities of the demateria-lized finance on a global scale. A financial operation dealing with real capital becomes a collective exploration of where our cultural and in-tellectual potential could lead us to.

CONTINUUM Luigi Coppola, Teatro Continuo di Burri, Milano (2016) in “Stage as social platform” cur. by Simone Frangi and Tommaso Sacchi, assisted by Giovanna Manzotti. Production coordination: Viafarini.Project coordinator: Lucia Mazzi; Soundtrack: Nicola Ratti; Performer: Elena Adamou, Lenia Georgiou, Antonella Fittipaldi, Caterina Gobbi, Car-lotta Mansi, Sofia Paggiaro, Lucia Palmero, Emilia Piz, Miriam Secco, Floida Skraqi, Simona Rinaldo, Erica Romano, Claudia Scarsella, Letizia Scarpello; Narration: Alessio Baù, Daniel Blanga Gubbay, Barbara Boioc-chi, Daria Carmi, Ivan Carozzi, Ilaria Cuccagna, Giulia Ferrarese, Cri-stina Lorenzi, Lucia Palmero, Erica Romano, Giacomo Zani.Photography: Ilaria Cuccagna

The public action and installation ‘’Continuum’’ conceived by Luigi Cop-pola operates an imaginary and ritual reconnection with the spatial and temporal hole in which Teatro Continuo has disappeared from the histo-ry of Milano from 1989 to 2015. This absence becomes a potential element for re-examining the history and the events that occurred in Milan in that period, by imagining this “urban space of possibilities” – as Burri defined it – as a theatre of public, political and cultural actions.

In 1973, on the occasion of the XV Triennale International Exhibition of Milano, Alberto Burri inaugurates Teatro Continuo in the frame of the project Contatto Arte-Città curated by Giulio Macchi for Parco Sempio-ne. Teatro Continuo is an architectural installation that functions as a open access stage and as a theatrical machine always ready for use, hosting a wide range of activities, from artistic acts to indipendent initiatives triggered by the civil society. The theatre is placed on an imaginary axis that, cutting the park, connects the Duomo with Cor-so Sempione and generates a telescope between the Filarete tower of the Castello Sforzesco and the Arco della Pace (S. Frangi, about Teatro Con-tinuo).

Project produced in Tallin, Kumu Museum, cur. by Mary Ann TalvistuPerformers: The Youth Club of Kumu

The construction of collective identity of the places and the places of identity. In a young country like Estonia, it’s interesting to propose these open issues to a group in an age of passage, strongly related to the construction of his own identity and sense of belonging to a terri-tory, a collectivity, a nation. The starting and vanishing point of the laboratory are the Society houses, places created in the end of 19th century, on the initiative of rural intelligentsia and ordinary people as part of the emergence of Estonian nation – building (*). The landing site for our experiences is the Estonian National art Museum (Kumu) which instead was built to ra-tify a national identity. The photo series, which condense the stimuli created during the wor-kshop, are taken in a in between space, a majestic entrance planned to welcome the public in the museum and to connect the great Lasnamae district, created in the Soviet times. This connection with the city has never happened, the entrance to the museum for practical and logisti-cal reasons becomes another one. The site then becomes a stage or an identity transitional space, where ghosts can resurface, fragile narra-tives can be built and walls could collapse.

ORTOCOMUNE ongoing project

progetto prodotto da aperto_2015 art on the border, promosso dal Di-

stretto Culturale Valle Comonica in collaborazione con Case Sparse_tra

l’etere e la terra, ColtivarVivendo, Ass. Codadilana, Istituto Compren-

in Valle Camonica.

zioni, istituzioni e cittadini.

MASSES and MOTETS vol.IIExercises in Political Chorality developed in the fremework of Face to Face with Monument, Into The City

Production: Hundsturm, Into the city / Wiener Festwochen festival

Masses and Motets vol II is specifically conceived for the festival Into

the City (Wiener Festwochen), reacting at the context created by Chto De-

lat? collective, in Schwarzenbergplatz in Vianna.

The work lies in unveiling—uncovering as well as anchoring—histories and

memories.

The result of the laboratory with the slovenian choir, hip hop, spoken

word and contemporary musician is a musical performance where the main

figure is a “choir of witnesses”. Philosophers like Giorgio Agamben have

theorized the position of the witness as the basis of ethico-political

relations insofar as the witness answers to the suffering of others wi-

thout usurping their place. Witnessing is a way of seeing and listening

that requires an acceptance

of vulnerability.

How can we make room for the voices of those others to “appear” in public

without attempting to speak for them?

What about those who can speak—those who can bear witness, and those who

cannot—or those who don’t have the possibility to appear, or who we pain-

fully know will not re-appear?

How can we welcome those others who address us from the deep wells of hi-

story and from the present memories of our democratic societies?

IO IN TESTA (A-HEAD)cantiere comune di immaginario politico

project in collaboration with Marzia MiglioraFondazione Teatro Valle Bene Comune | Nomas Foundation - A Theatre Cycle | Nuovo Cinema Palazzo, 2013photos by: Francesco Niccolaiblog of the project: iointesta.tumblr.com

IO IN TESTA is an artistic and participatory process activated with the aim of revealing the potential resulting from the experiences of occupation, self-triggered, crowdfunding and citizen mobilization. The project took place during the week proceeding the municipal elections in Rome (20-26 May 2013) on the invitation of the Teatro Valle Occupato (in tran-sformation as Fondazione Teatro Valle Bene Comune), Nomas Foundation) and Nuo-vo Cinema Palazzo. With the title cantiere comune di immaginario politico, Marzia Migliora and Luigi Coppola have set up a workshop open to all citizens, in the spaces of the Nuovo Cinema Palazzo area, both philosophical and physical. The aim was to listen, stimulate and translate in a symbolic and artistic way the instan-ces, proposals and potential resulting from the commitment of all participants, transforming them into a collective experience, driving force of the common good, a realistic utopia where the citizen is the engine of change.During the workshop, interviews regarding personal stories of commitement, strategies for the common good, small musical and theatrical performances were continuously held on stage while around the tables each participant was produ-cing his own headdress.

Act 1: ResistanceAct 2: Harmony or conflict?Act 3: Vision and Prophecy

“Masses & Motets” are three musical performances that focus on having one’s say, the resistance to entertainment and consumer society, political declara-tion, proposal and vision. The choir symbolizes the ability of a group of pe-ople to “agree” and to create a shared harmony through moments in which their individual or collective voices are in dialogue or in conflict. The artists involved come from different musical and performance backgroun-ds, including hip-hop, performative literature, polyphonic singing, theater, slam poetry, easy listening and experimental music. The project is rooted in the writings of authors who continue to leave their mark in terms of political imagery, such as Langer, Pasolini, Gramsci and Beuys, and also contains ori-ginal writings specially created for the project. The performances will first take place in public spaces around the city and then at Lungomare Gasthaus in a group performance.

Page 15: LUIGI COPPOLA - Italian · PDF fileLuigi Coppola’s installaion, ... topia e Ecotopia per Lecce 2019 ... Sofia Paggiaro, Lucia Palmero, Emilia Piz,

The unifying symbol chosen for the project was a headdress made of papier-mâché, starting from the traditional model worn by masons.Simple sheets of paper have became personal manifestos “to put on head”, ex-pression of desires and symbolic, identifying, combative, personal proposals.

The moltitude of headdress created during the workshop have become a means to build a “social sculpture.” A series of symbolic actions have connected the Te-atro Valle to public space and vice versa.

VIDEO / PERFORMANCE

The project sprung from a collaboration with the belgian economist and antropo-logist Paul Jorion. Starting from a section of the famous blog of the latter, the two have worked on a text that gathers the propositions written by visitors of the blog, that collectively participated in the creation of a “realist uto-pia” - as the title of the section recites. Here the users were invited to sug-gest their own ideas about the economical and political crisis. The new script is staged through the structure of the classical greek choir, so as to articu-late a parallelism of demands and propositions around the issues raised in the text. While the figure of the hero/leader is absent, the voice of the choir, here in-terpreting the so-called “people”, is empowered by the use of masks built by the artist himself.
