Another Fall racing season is about to begin!! Since I've been out at the club

nearly every day for the past week working on my boat, I've had the

opportunity to observe that we've had some really nice windy days. The

downside of it for me is that my boat is on the railway and I can't take

advantage of all this wind. However, all of these nice days have gotten me

excited about racing in the Fall, and especially the Labor Day Regatta coming

up on September 2-3. There will be Dinghy and Keelboat classes. Notice of

Races for CYC Regattas are on the website and posted on the club bulletin

board. The complete Fall racing schedule is available on the CYC website. In

the meantime, get your boats ready!! Here's a few pictures of recent boat

maintenance at CYC:

As we are in the process of finalizing plans for Oktoberfest, which will be held on Saturday, October 21st, it’s time to put the call out for volunteers to help with this event. There’s a lot of tasks to be completed– setting up, serving, cleaning, etc.– to putting on one of CYC’s premiere events! It is also a final opportunity to satisfy some Work Hours. For new members, in addition to clocking some Work Hours, it’s a great time to meet other CYCers!

So, if you’d like to volunteer to assist with the Oktoberfest Party, contact Catherine at [email protected].

We’d also like to announce that the Commodore’s Gala is back! The Gala will be held on Saturday, December 9th. More information will be forthcoming. So, mark your calendars!!!!

2017 Tennessee Valley Challenge Cup

To be hosted by

Privateer Yacht Club

The Tennessee Valley Challenge Cup, begun in 1987, is an annual regatta hosted by six Tennessee River sailing clubs.

Competition for this historic racing event consists of club racing teams divided into three fleets: Spinnaker Keelboats; Non-Spinnaker Keelboats; and Dinghies. The scores of the top three finishers of each club are totaled, and the club with the lowest score is awarded the Perpetual Tennessee Valley Challenge Cup Trophy, as well as a Keeper Trophy for the winning club. While competitors in each of the three fleets will be awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies.

This year’s TVCC will be hosted by Privateer Yacht Club, in Chattanooga, on the weekend of September 23rd and 24th. Concord Yacht Club has again been invited to take part in this fun and competitive racing event. As an historical note, members of CYC participated in the TVCC hosted by Privateer Yacht Club in 2012, and won trophies in both the Keelboat Spinnaker and the Dinghy class.

Unfortunately, CYC did not have enough boats participating in the 2012 regatta to be in contention for the Challenge Cup Award. Perhaps, this is the year for that to change. CYC has both a goodly number of very good racers, and a number of boats that can travel to this regatta. Thus, there is great opportunity for CYC to field a race team to make a good showing, and possibly win the Challenge Cup.

Here are some reasons to attend:

1. An opportunity to demonstrate the race talent we have at CYC. 2. An opportunity to promote inter-club racing with a neighboring club. 3. You will have fun. The people at PYC are extremely friendly, and will make sure all visitors

have a great time at their club, and the regatta. 4. The PYC race venue is very good, and the race competition superb, which makes for some

very good racing. 5. It is an easy and quick drive down to Chattanooga.

Let’s see if we can field a great racing team, and bring home the Cup.

(865) 588-6514, Boy Scouts of America, Knoxville

For a youth experience that is more than thumbs on the key pad of a smart phone, please pass the word to friends about Sea Scouting in Ship 300 where membership is open to boys and girls, age 13 & 8th grade to age 21, one of a few activities that youth can continue through college and throughout their lives. Annual membership is $25, plus it is free to registered Boy Scouts. For more information contact George Hubbell at 980-0879 or email [email protected]. Sea Scouts have fun on the water and messing about with boats. For example, they sailed 42 weeks last year and try to sail every week. Enjoying a cruise on the Tennessee River and locking-through Fort Loudon Dam, a first for most, Ship 300 crew traveled approximately 68 nautical miles to Boy Scout Camp Buck. A storm was encountered for approximately five nautical miles of the trip with wind causing a 15 degree heel on bare poles. Camp Buck Toms averages 300 to 450 youth each week through the summer season. One of the beauties of teaching is that no one knows how far in eternity teaching goes. As if motor sailing a Pearson 26 from CYC to Mobile Bay and on to Pensacola was not enough, former Ship 300 Sea Scout Justin Douthat completed a 36-day circumnavigation of Lake Michigan this summer on a cadet cruise from the Michigan Maritime Academy located in Traverse City, Michigan. Sea Scouting began in 1912 to teach personal values that build individual character in preparation for a life with integrity while having fun messing about with boats, learning to sail, learning to maintain boats, rules of the road on the water, small boat handling, rowing, and maritime skills, history and tradition, etc. Now is a good time for a youth to join Ship 300, to be able to qualify to represent the United States in the International Sea Scout Sailing Regatta in 2018. If you don’t pass the word, Sea Scouts sink.

Sea Scout Chase Busby locking through Fort Loudoun Dam. Chase even did radio exchanges with the Lockmaster!!

Ever wonder what those two weighted poles of irregular height are intended to do? Sea Scouts beat the heat with water volleyball using the poles donated by previous Sea Scouts sixteen years ago, as a fun way to relax and have cool fun when there's no breeze. See the ball in the air? It's round but not an eclipse in the upper left quadrant. One pole is short for the shallow water and the other pole is tall for the deep water, thus stretching a net across become parallel with the surface of the water. Neat, aye?

Sea Scouts are also concerned about the environment and plastic bottles creating junk piles in the waterways and oceans. Here, Ellie Tyner (CYC) and John Walker are bringing ashore a cache of plastic bottles retrieved.

For more on the junk pile in the Pacific ocean check out the National Geographic article by clicking on the site below: Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Ship 300 meets on Sunday afternoons at 2:00. A Fun time for boys and girls ages 13 to 21. For more information, contact George Hubbell at 980-0879 or email <[email protected]>.

Daffynition- Bottom Paint– What you get when the cockpit seats are freshly painted!

Yawl– A sailboat from South Carolina, with some good bourbon stored down yonder in the cabin!

You might be a sailing bum if: your idol is Jimmy Buffett. your boat's motor used to be a dashboard

fan. you think rum is the official state drink. you've ever written your resume on a bar

napkin.

“Hi sailor", said the barmaid, "you look like you’re a little down." "That I am lassie", said the sailor, " It saddens me to say that I serve under a very tough Captain!" "That's a shame sweetie, how bad does it get?" "Well lassie, recently I complained that there were roaches in me bunk. The captain gave me three demerits for keep'n pets!"
