MARCH 2020 THE DIABELLI PROJECT (CONCERT & DOCUMENTARY)Renowned pianist and acknowledged Beethoven specialist Rudolf Buchbinder presents a unique project transposing Beethoven’s genius into present time. Not only will he perform Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, but also as a world premiere at the Musik- verein new Diabelli variations commissioned from today’s leading composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki, Toshio Hosokawa, Brett Dean, Jörg Widmann and Max Richter. A documentary covers the project, hence explaining the differences and similarities of classical music then and today, how music was composed, financed and performed. As all is based on the same Waltz by Diabelli the project appeals to beginners as well as experts. Buchbinder will tour with the Diabelli project the concert halls in 2020 and 2021.A co-production with WDR/ARTE and ORF/3sat
MAY & JUNE 2020 BEETHOVEN SYMPHONY CYCLENELSONS & WIENER PHILHARMONIKERTo celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday, the Vienna Philharmonic will perform the Beethoven Symphony Cycle under the baton of Andris Nelsons throughout Europe. Following the tour the full cycle will be performed from May 23 until 7 June 2020 twice at the Goldener Saal of the Musikverein in Vienna, where it will be recorded with NHK’s advanced technology as the first Beethoven Cycle ever in 8K Super High Vision, which is four times the quality of just introduced Ultra High Definition. The aim is to create the Beethoven cycle for the 21st century, musically and technical – which of course will also available in UHD or even HD. With this unique concert and recording project the Wiener Philharmoniker want to honour their “founding father”, as the orchestra was created for the purpose of performing Ludwig van Beethoven’s music. “The invitation to perform and record the symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic is an honour and a privilege”, says Nelsons. “That was a great gift for me, not least because we know how important Vienna was for Beethoven” he explains. “Beethoven spent most of his life in this city, where his sympho-nies were premiered. When the Vienna Philharmonic play Beethoven, they immediately have the right style. They can concentrate on the core of the music.” Soloists of the monumental 9th symphony will be Lucy Crowe, Gerhild Romberger, Klaus Florian Vogt and Günther Groissböck.A co-production of NHK and UNITEL, in cooperation with ORF, ARTE and Wiener Philharmoniker
2020 B! – THE BEETHOVEN CODEThe film follows superstars from all areas of music, sharing their views and personal experiences on Beethoven how he influenced them: Julian Rachlin, Billy Joel, Hans Zimmer, Joshua Bell, Yuja Wang, Rebekka Bakken, Anna Netrebko and many more pay tribute to a great genius of music! A co-production with ORF
