The Science BehindCurcuVETNumerous studies in dogs, horses, sheep, rodents, andhumans demonstrate Curcu VET's (Meriva® in the caseof humans) potential for maintaining normal inflam-matory processes.

Joint and Muscle SupportStudies demonstrate CurcuVET supports a healthyinflammatory response in small animals and horses.A recent European study analyzed the bioactivity ofCurcu VET compared to non-steroidal anti-inflammato-ry drugs and found their bioactivity was similar. Thestudy's sponsors, who were studying canine arthritis, found CurcuVET was effective in down-regulating thepro-inflammatory substances, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-KB).l

A similar equine study on the effect of CurcuVET oncytokine gene expression found significant down-reg-ulation of interleukin (IL)-l~ and IL-1RN in mares andinhibition of cyclooxygenase-2, TNF-a, and IL-1RN andincrease in IL-6 in foals."

Similar results were achieved in an eight-month humantrial of Meriva. Enhanced joint health was reflected inimprovements in both clinical and biochemical endpoints.'

Hepatic SupportSeveral studies have illustrated curcumin's hepatopro-tective effects, leading researchers to suggest its use canprotect the liver from exogenous insults from environ-mental toxins, such as acetaminophen and carbon tet-rachloride. Curcumin also has the capacity to increaseboth the flow and solubility of bile. Curcumin's hepa-toprotective effects are due in part to direct free radi-cal scavenging; but curcumin also enhances the body'snatural antioxidant system, which increases glutathi-one levels, thereby aiding in hepatic detoxification andinhibiting nitrosamine formation. In a 2007 absorptionstudy, liver levels of curcumin were significantly higherafter dosing with the curcumin-phosphatidylcholinecomplex found in Curcu VET compared to conventionalcurcumin extracts.'

Gastrointestinal SupportCurcumin has demonstrated its potential to help main-tain the body's normal inflammatory response. Forexample, in numerous animal studies, curcumin hasshown the ability to help maintain healthy intestinalmucosa under various adverse conditions. Among theeffects noted in the various trials have been decreasedNF-KB, nitric oxide, and free radicals in the colonic mu-cosa. In two human studies, patients who had poorgastrointestinal health demonstrated that the admin-istration of curcumin improved overall well-being,maintained the levels of biomarkers generally associ-ated with the body's normal inflammatory response, and served as a non-drug adjunct that did not disruptthe use of conventional medications.Y In addition, in astudy of curcumin-phosphatidylcholine complex in hu-mans for joint health, patients experienced a decreasein gastrointestinal complaints. The authors speculatedit was because of a decrease in NSAID use."

Supports Ocular HealthIn a clinical study of 106 patients with a long-term con-dition adversely affecting ocular health, Meriva (Curcu-VET) resulted in alleviation of signs and symptoms ofeye discomfort in 80 percent of participants. It was welltolerated, improved overall quality of life, and helpedmaintain the eye's normal inflammatory response?

Provides Support forOncology PatientsA recent in vitro study on mice found that the curcuminphytosome in Curcu VET increased the receptivity ofvarious mice cells to subsequent oxaliplatin chemo-therapy. In addition, curcumin phytosome also posi-tively increased markers associated with the desiredeffects of oxaliplatin chemotherapy. These results dem-onstrate that Curcu VET should be considered for thenutritional support of oncology patients."

Maintains a Healthy InflammatoryResponse in RuminantsCurcu VET was shown to limit early neutrophil infiltra-tion in vitro in sheep neutrophils, indicating it mighthave a place in helping to maintain a normal inflamma-tory response in ruminants."

A Breakthrough in Curcumin Absorption

Phytosome Technology• Marked enhancement of bioavailability• Significantly greater clinical benefits• Assured delivery to the tissues• No compromise of nutrient safety

Thorne Research/Thorne Vethas teamed up with Indena S.p.A.,the global expert in botanical extract technology, to bring veteri-narians an exciting new curcumin phytosome called CurcuVET.CurcuVET provides your patients with significantly more bio-availability than any curcumin extract or compound currentlyavailable. CurcuVET is manufactured to the high quality stan-dards you've learned to expect from Thorne and Indena.

What are phytosomes? Phytosomes are created by a patentedprocess that binds an herbal extract to a phospholipid - in thiscase phosphatidylcholine, a principal element of cellmembranes. This unique phytosome complex easily crosses the gut barrier, unlike common herbal extracts, and results in significantly high-er blood levels than standardized 95-percent curcumin extract.

A 2007study in rodents and published in the journal Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology demonstrated CurcuVET'ssuperior bioavailability, compared to ordinary curcumin. Liver levels of curcumin were also higher with CurcuVETsupplementation.' In a more recent (soon to be published) randomized, single-blind, crossover study in nine humans, total curcuminoid bioavailability, as evaluated by the plasma area under the curve (AUC),was about 29-fold higher forMeriva than for the conventional turmeric extract.
