The numbers is an important part of the time-honoredChinese culture and has a great influence in peoples daily life.

Certain numbers are considered "lucky" while some others

unlucky, because their names sound similar to words thathave positive or negative meanings. Even numbers are generally considered luckier than the odd

    ones.

Some numbers in itself neither lucky nor unlucky, but whencombining with other numbers they will have specialmeanings.

People select lucky numbers when choosing residences, telephone numbers, business addresses, wedding dates,

festivals and other celebratory events. Expectant mothers in China are known to pick the dates of

Caesarean sections carefully in order to endow their offspringwith the luckiest birth date possible.

Eight is the luckiest of all. The pronunciation of the number eight is similar to the character faat

() in Cantonese, which means prosperity, money and status.

This opinion was mostly held by people in Guangdong province before, but after the reform and opening up about 20 years ago, it is popular allover the country with the movement of population becoming easier andfaster.

It is surely no coincidence that the Games of the XXIX Olympiad opened

at 8pm local time on the eighth day of the eighth month of 2008. Another reason why the number 8 could be considered lucky is because

it is a perfect symmetrical shape. You can cut the number 8 in halfvertically or horizontally, and both halves mirror themselves perfectly.

Perfect symmetry lends itself to perfect balance. There is also a resemblance between two digits, 88, and the

('double joy'), a popular decorative design composed of two stylizedcharacters (xi, 'joy', 'happiness'). Double Happiness (sometimestranslated as Double Joy) is a Chinese ornamental design commonly

    used as a decoration.

The number 2 is considered lucky because all good

things come in pairs (ho sh chnshun

). Cantonese speaking people like the number two

because it sounds the same as the word "easy" ()in Cantonese.

The number 6, pronounced li, sounds like theword for flowing (li), smooth (li) orslippery (li)" which can mean "everything goessmoothly". Therefore the number 6 is considered verylucky, especially where it occurs in multiples.

So highly is the number 6 prized, in fact, that amotorcycle dealership in Guangdong Province paid

the net sum of RMB272,000 (USD $34,000) for amotorcycle license plate bearing the number AW6666. Many couples like to choose the day 6, 16, 26 as their

wedding day, in the hope of everything going

smoothly. People there often pay extra to get a mobile phone

number including this string of digits.

Though even numbers are generally consideredluckier than the odd ones, one odd number, the 9, is

considered especially propitious. This is partly owing to the fact that the number 9 has

traditionally been associated with the emperor andpartly owing to the fact that the sound byte for nine

is close to that for the word longlasting (ji). In feudal society, the emperors paid special favorite to

9, in the hope that their reign could last forever.

Today, many Chinese like to choose their weddingday at the day including nine, in the hope that theirmarriage will last forever.

In Chinese tradition, the fifteenth day of the seventh month inthe lunar calendar is called Ghost Day and the seventh monthin general is regarded as the Ghost Month, in which ghostsand spirits, including those of the deceased ancestors, comeout from the lower realm.

Unlike other celebrations of the dead in Eastern cultures thatseek to honor dead ancestors, the Hungry Ghost Festivalseeks to pacify the hungry ghosts, the ghosts of strangers

and the un-cared-for dead. These are the ghosts of those who died by their own hands,

by accidents, by drowning or hanging who have been deniedentry into heaven.

Angry because they are forced to dwell in hell without food orcomfort, when released, they search for souls to take theirplace in misery.

To Taoists and Buddhists, these evil spirits are not to betaken lightly.

They are most active at night and can take many forms

including: snakes, moths, birds, foxes, wolves, andtigers. They can even appear as beautiful men or women toseduce the living.

When they possess an individual by entering the body they

cause illness and mental disorders. To appease these wandering spirits, Buddhists and Taoists

burn bundles of joss sticks, candles, paper hell money, food, and other offerings by the roadside.

Communities along rivers or near the sea float lanterns in theshape of the lotus or carved from fruit or gourds in the waterto guide them away from their homes. They follow thelanterns from the river bank or sea shore till they can no

    longer be seen.
