A Note from the EditorHi everyone and welcome to the first issue of Lucky Dip! I’m thrilled to share with you thisdolly mixture of family fun that we’ve puttogether.
Right now at Lucky Dip, we’re feeling really inspired by the movement to plant One Million Trees in One Day (pgs 4 & 5) and hope that you will be too! We’re also loving the story about the two young stowaways who set sail for New York from their homes in Darndale, without spending a single penny (pgs 10 & 11 ).
Also in this issue, we definitely want you to get your hands dirty - be it through making your own chocolate Bliss Balls (pgs 12 & 13), or concocting your own gross gooey Slime (pgs 20 & 21)! Be sure not to eat the slime though, kids: it’s foolish acts like that which have left most of my mates extinct.
Please enjoy and if you’ve any feedback, feel free to email us at [email protected].
Yours Hungrily,Jeff the Dinosaur xx

“Except during the nine months before he draws his first breath, no man manages his affairs as well as a tree does.” George Bernard Shaw
TREES FOR EVERY SCHOOL…
Trees in schools make a re-ally useful and easily acces-sible resource for teachers and pupils. They also pro-vide important habitat for flora and fauna amongst buildings, playgrounds, car parks and sports fields. With various parts of the curriculum for children of all ages covering subjects such as plant biology, eco-systems and food chains, biodiversity and the carbon and water cycles, we hope that trees planted in schools by this project will make for an interesting and help-ful outdoor classroom for many generations of teach-ers and children.
We are working with coun-cils, community groups, schools and colleges across the whole island to co-or-dinate this project. We en-courage schools not able to accommodate any trees to visit and/or help with the planting at a local commu-nity planting site instead if possible. We hope that on the day of planting, schools will be able to involve chil-dren directly in the planting of the trees with help and supervision from teachers and school caretakers/gar-deners.
The young people of today will grow old with these trees and will ultimately be
Irish weather during the early autumn and when the trees become fully dormant for the winter.
The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago, the sec-ond best time is now.....
Planting a million trees in one day with only a few hours of daylight will be a great challenge. We believe that many hands make light work; the more people join-ing the huge team that will bring this project to frui-tion, the easier the job will be. It might rain, it might snow, it could be the hottest day of the year… but we’re going to give it our very best shot.
One Million Trees in One Day is a charity, not-for-profit, cross-border, com-munity and environmental initiative which will plant a MILLION young native trees at different sites across both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland in 24 hours.
It’s true aim however is to establish individual trees and woodlands in both ru-ral and urban areas that will grow for many years, pro-viding valuable resources and benefiting ecosystem.
The date of planting will be between late November 2012 and March 2013. The date will depend on the
44
responsible for their care and protection. We hope to inspire genuine enthusiasm in this project, both now and for the future.
LEARN TO PLANT TREES... VOLUNTEER IN-FORMATION
We want to keep the car-bon footprint of the day of planting as low as possible. We will arrange transport from local pick-up points to the tree planting sites and back again. This will also re-duce damage to the ground at the sites from lots of cars arriving and leaving. When allocating volunteers to planting sites, we will keep everyone as close to home as possible.
As well as lots and lots of volunteers, we also need lots and lots of spades...If you have a spade in your
garden shed, we would be really grateful if you could dust it off and bring it with you on the day. If you have more spades we’d be extra grateful if you could bring them too. If you don’t have a spade don’t panic, we will provide one.
If you have any queries about One Million Trees in One Day or if you think you can help us with a part of the pro-ject, please send an email to: [email protected]

It was the end of summer, 1985, and two friends, Keith Byrne, aged 10, and Noel Mur-ray, aged 13, were hanging around their homes in Darn-
dale. The boys were in Keith’s house and decided to go embark on an ad-venture because they were bored. They began by hopping onto a D.A.R.T. go-ing to Dun Laoghaire. The D.A.R.T. was new to Dublin at the time and the boys had figured out a way to sneak onto it without getting caught.
From London, they decided to sneak onto the Underground Tube that went to Heath-row Airport. They were toying with the idea of flying home from Heathrow to Dublin. When they arrived at the airport, the two boys wandered around for a while. The cheeky chaps even robbed the money from a wishing well so that they had some cash.
A security woman spotted the young boys rambling around the airport and asked them where their parents were. The boys were quick to make up a lie for her so they wouldn’t get caught. They told the officer their mother was coming with tickets and bags. She believed them! They said the same thing at the main airport security and got through to the Duty Free shopping area. The cheeky chancers even shoplifted some jewellery from Duty Free. They be-gan to feel bored in the shopping area so followed a crowd of people walking in one direc-tion towards a boarding gate. They stepped onto a moving walkway and asked a passenger where the plane was going. When he answered, “New York,” they decided they would go too!
When they realised there was a ferry that went from Dun Laoghaire, they wondered if there was anyway to sneak onto that too… and found out there was! They got caught the first time they tried, but were able to get onto the following ferry. While their Mother was waiting for them to come home
for their dinner, the two lads were trying to tiptoe onto a ferry headed for Britain. This was to become the first leg in the boys’ extraordinary adventure. The fer-ry brought them from Dublin to Holyhead in Wales. From there, the boys climbed aboard a train (without tickets, of course), heading for London.
Cheeky ChancersThis is the true story of two boys from Dublin who made headlines across the world after chancing their way from Darndale all the way across the Atlantic Ocean to New York City!

The policeman brought them to the police station in New York. They got in touch with the Gardaí in Dublin and discovered that the boys had been reported missing. Keith and Noel were put in a hotel suite for the night and had security men assigned to watch over them. Being the chancers they were, the boys still had some tricks up their sleeves. First-
ly, they pretended they had never seen American Dollars before. They asked the guards could they see and touch the money. They pretended and touch the money. They pretended to be surprised when they saw the notes that the guards let them keep them as a keepsake. All in all, they made a profit of several hundred dollars!
The next day, they were put on an Aer Lingus flight home. Before they went to the Airport, the security men kindly brought them on a little
tour of New York. The boys got to see the Empire State Building, and the security men even bought them a souvenir toy when they were there!
So, after a D.A.R.T, a ferry, a plane, another train, the Tube, a police car and finally a jumbo jet, the chancers finally made their way home...Now remember, kids - please don’t try this at home!
POP QUIZ,
HOTSHOT!
Do you know what the letters
“D.A.R.T.” stand for?
For the answer, turn to
The boys walked up to the boarding gate. They were asked for their boarding passes. By now they knew what lie would probably work - they told the airline work-ers their mother was on the way with their tickets. It
worked again! They were allowed board the plane and managed to find some empty seats. The plane took off, not knowing it had two chancers on board. After enjoying a meal and a James Bond movie, the lads eventually touched down at John F Kennedy Air-port in New York. They got off the plane and followed the crowd towards security. The security officer asked them for their pass-port. You can probably guess what their response was - the boys pointed behind them and said their mother was coming with their IDs. As soon as the security officer was distracted, they managed to crouch down and sneak by the security box… and into New York!
Their plan was to go into town and try sell the stolen jewellery from Heathrow Airport. They didn’t realise then how big the ‘town’ of New York would be. The boys finally got caught out when they asked a policeman how to get to New York City. The suspicious policeman asked where their parents were. By now the boys were starting to realise they had nowhere to go, and were wondering how they would get home. So for the first time they told the truth about how they were on their own and how they got on the plane.

Did you know?
Malahide Castle is the oldest inhabited castle in Ireland. Malahide Castle was both a fortress and a private home for nearly 800 years! From 1185 to 1973, it was home to the Talbot family.
The Castle has, not one, not two, but FIVE ghosts!
The White LadyA painting of a beautiful lady in a flowing white dress hung for many years in the castle. She is known as the White Lady. Every now and again she is known to float from the painting and drift around the Castle.
PuckPuck was the family jester to the Talbots in the 16th Cen-tury. He is now somewhat of a celebrity in Malahide. Apart from being a jester, he also kept watch in a turret of the Castle, known as Puck’s Staircase.

Lady Maud PlunkettThe bride in question is Lady Maud Plunkett. She got hitched three times and now spends her time chasing her third husband, a Lord Chief Justice through the corridors of the Castle.
Sir Walter Hussey, Lord GaltrimThis poor fella was wounded in battle and died on his wedding day. Roaming the castle since the 15th Century, he can be seen chilling out, muttering ominous moans. He’s also said to be not too im-pressed with his bride who immediately married his rival. Bad buzz.

What you will need: 1) Transfer Paper (available in Easons) 2) Plain-coloured T-shirt 3) Printer 4) Iron
up to iron the image onto your t-shirt (be careful ask-ing this because most sane grown-ups despise ironing). Be careful to follow the in-structions that come with the transfer paper for iron-ing. Select the highest tem-perature setting on the iron and allow to heat up. Do not use steam.
Hold the iron down firmly over each section of your image and count up to 120 seconds. Allow the paper to cool down, then peel the back-ing paper from the t-shirt.
Send us some pictures of your creations! You can email us at [email protected]
What to do: First off, you need to de-cide what you want to put on your t-shirt. This could be ANYTHING! Your fa-vourite photo, something you’ve designed on your computer, your favourite word or catch-phrase - the list is endless! Once you’ve decided, have an adult help you to print out the image on the Trans-fer Paper. This special pa-per allows you to transfer any image from your com-puter onto a t-shirt. Make sure you use the right side of the paper (refer to the pack instructions). ***Don’t forget to print the picture as a mirror image! This can normally be found in printer settings.*** Using a scissors, trim a margin of approximately 5mm around the image. After the image is printed, very kindly ask a grown-

Tyrannosaurus Rex means ‘Tyrant Lizard’. They were one of the biggest meat eaters, weighing in around 8 tons (more than a rubbish truck!)
The Dinosaur with the smallest brain in comparison with it’s body was... the stegosaurus! It’s brain was as big as a walnut in a body weighing nearly two tons!
The tallest dinosaurs were brachiosaurid sauropods; their front legs were longer than their back legs and they had giraffe-like necks. The Brachiosaurus was 39 feet high and only ate plants.
The reason dinosaurs are extinct... no-one really knows!
However, there are several different scientific theories:
Dinosaurs are creatures that lived on Earth millions of years ago. There are three “Ages” of Dinosaurs - Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous.
Do you ever wonder why dinosaurs looked so odd?Dinosaurs were around for millions of years. During that time they changed to suit their envi-ronment. Horns, plates, long necks, claws, all served a purpose for each dinosaur. If you think about it, dinosaurs were around for more than 200 million years. Human beings have been around for about 120,000. Think how odd WE might look in another million years or so!
