LUCHA LiBRE

But first some history...

LuchA FuTuRE is a brave new event combining fifteen of Mexico’s finest luchadores with the music of Bostich & Fussible (Nortec Collective) in a show that takes you to the future of the

honourable and heroic world of lucha libre.

4 LUCHA FUTURE

ucha Libre is the very soul of Mexico, its imagery and he-roes are carried into all areas

of life in music, film, cartoons and paint-ings. Lucha Libre, literally ‘Free Wres-tling’ or ‘Free Fight’, is an important part of Mexican culture. It is second only to football as Mexico’s second-biggest spectator event and can be seen on any night of the week in at least 10 venues across Mexico City alone.

in Mexico. In 1933 he started the ‘Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre’.In the beginning, many of the wrestlers were foreign, including the American Bobby Sampson and the Irishman Cyclone Mackay. Ten years later Lutteroth built the first lucha libre arena in Mexico City – Arena Coliseo - which remains a key venue.

Little by little Mexico started to produce luchadores who over the years have become more acrobatic, theatrical and spectacular leading in a line of ascent to Lucha Future. Lutteroth was, in large part, instrumental in developing the careers of the best-known luchadores, including El Santo and Gory Guerrero.

There are many versions of the origins of lucha libre. The generally accepted story is that in 1929, Don Salvador Lut-teroth witnessed a wrestling match in Texas and decided to try out the format

exican luchadores di-vide into two types: rudos and técnicos.

The rudos represent pure evil and rely on perfidy and trickery in or-der to win. Técnicos, on the other hand, represent heroic and noble qualities, and rely on their techni-cal wrestling skill to win. They are wrestling purists and generally all-around good citizens.

LUCHA FUTURE 5

he mask is part of a tradition that goes back centuries in Mex-

ico. Aztec warriors would don ani-mal masks, in the image of jaguars or wolves, which they hoped would enable them to fight like those creatures and intimidate their enemies. The mask of a luchador is revered and admired by fans, many of whom wear replica masks while watching a match.

t The Mask

uchadores are tradi-tionally more agile and perform more aer-

ial manoeuvres than their North American counterparts. They ex-ecute high-flying moves by utiliz-ing the wrestling ring’s ropes to catapult themselves towards their opponents, using intricate combi-nations in rapid-fire succession, and applying complex submission holds.Lucha libre is also known for its

tag-team wrestling matches. The teams are often made of up to three members, of which one is designat-ed the captain. A successful fall in a match can be achieved by either pinning the captain of the opposing team or by pinning the other members. Falls often occur simultaneously, which adds to the extremely stylized na-ture of the action. In Lucha Future the winner is de-cided in one fall.

l Lucha Libre Style

ith the importance placed on masks in lucha libre, losing a mask to an op-ponent is seen as the ultimate insult

and can sometimes seriously hurt the career of the un-masked wrestler. Putting one’s mask or hair on the line is a tradition in lucha libre as a means to settle a heated feud between two or more wrestlers. To lose in one of these matches is to be forever humbled before your foe, and to be exposed as being too human. The moment of unmasking is the point of highest dra-matic tension in Lucha Libre; it is conducted with an air of respect and dignity fitting the instant of ultimate revelation, the moment when the face of the man will emerge from beneath the mask of the character.

Turbo, aka Golden Boy is celebrating 10 years since his Arena Azteca Budokan debut as he joins Lucha Future. He is the NWA Champion at Lightweight and holder of 3 masks. Turbo wanted to wrestle from around the age of 5 after watching Lucha Libre on the TV and is a super-talented high flyer. He says that his aspiration is not to be the best but to be unique and with moves like the Pumphan-dle Driver and The Fireman’s Carry Slam this desire seems almost certain to be fulfilled.

Bostich & Fussible from Tijuana mix Norteño

and electronic dance music to create their own

individual style.

The word Nortec is a conjunction of Norteño

(“of” or “from the North”) and Techno, but

mainly describes the collision between the

music, style and culture of electronic music

with those of norteño and tambora, two music

genres indigenous to North Mexico. These

styles are characterized by their use of accordi-

ons and double bass (norteño ); tubas, clarinets,

horns and pumping bass drums ( tambora ) and

quirky use of percussion and polyrhytmic snare

drum rolls (both). All of these elements create a

sound that is very Tijuana.

The group’s music has appeared in commer-

cials for Volvo, Dell, Nissan, and many others.

Tracks from their album ‘Tijuana Sessions,

Vol. 3’ can also be heard in the films “Fast Food

Nation” and “Babel” as well as the video games,

“FIFA Soccer” and “FIFA Street 2.”

An interactive coffee table book entitled “Paso

del Nortec - This Is Tijuana” dedicated to the

Nortec phenomena was released in the US,

Mexico and Europe.

Nortec Collective features four artists: Fussible

(Pepe Mogt), Bostich (Ramón Amezcua), Cloro-

fila (Jorge Verdín) and Hiperboreal (PG Beas).

Bostich & Fussible’s new album Bulevar 2000

is released in the UK by Because Music.
