Dear Parents, Students and Staff
Remembrance Day: On Monday our grade 3-6 students joined other schools and the Colac community for the
Colac Remembrance Day service hosted by the RSL at Memorial Square. Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day as it's also known, marks the very day that World War One ended in 1918. We hold a one-minute silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month to remember those who have died in any conflict. Some of our students represented our school as part of the Colac combined schools choir singing the Australian National Anthem, The New Zealand National Anthem and the Last Anzac, and our School Captains Lilli and Dakota laid a wreath on behalf of our school during the service. Our students are to be congratulated on their attitude and willingness to learn as part of this shared opportunity with the community. We thank the Colac RSL for our inclusion in this ceremony. Prep 2020: Our 2020 Prep students had their
first transition session this week, joining us for
an hour on Monday morning. The children had
the opportunity to meet their peers, become
involved with play based activities and spend
some time with our staff. During this time, some
nervous parents joined us for a coffee and some
slice whilst having the opportunity to see how
the children adapted to independently joining
the classroom. All of the students did a great job
with many making new friends, trying new things
and enjoying the experience of “big school”. We
will welcome our 2020 preps back on November
26th between 2pm-3pm and then will meet with
their families, Colac P.S buddies and staff on
November 28th at 6pm for our welcome BBQ
and information evening. Current Grade 5
students will be required to attend the BBQ in
their role as ‘buddies’.
Compass: After much consideration with staff and School Council Colac Primary is introducing the Compass School ICT Management system. Compass will replace all other digital communication platforms.
We will not be using Skoolbag or SeeSaw in 2020. All notifications, reports, letters and information will be available via the Compass platform. All parents and guardians will be supplied with unique log-in information and a parent information booklet in the coming weeks. Staff have begun using Compass to mark rolls and are familiarising themselves with the platform. We are also using Compass Kiosk at the front desk to sign in our students (lateness or early leavers) and visitors. Please note that

if your child/ren has a current, court ordered access restriction that has been provided to the school the child/ren will need to be signed out manually by a staff member. All parents and guardians will need to utilise Compass to access Semester Reports which will be available later this term to families. Once information is received please begin to familiarise yourself with the login process and feel free to start using the absence notification as soon as you are comfortable. In 2020 Compass will be used for absence notification, replacing the Skoolbag app and the current process of the school phoning if a child is absent without notification. Instead of school initiated phone calls, in 2020 families will receive a notification of an unexplained absence via Compass. This is compliant with the current DET Policy on same day absence notification. Please contact the office if you have any questions about Compass. Reporting: Following the semester one reports, parents, guardians and staff were provided an opportunity to provide feedback on the reporting of student results. This feedback was collated and is informing the preparing of reports for semester 2. The main areas of focus are improved consistency in reporting, the inclusion of areas for student improvement and clear accessible language for families that reflect student individual achievements. Reporting on student outcomes has been a focus of the media recently and it is hoped that our response, utilising your feedback helps to make the reports more user friendly and timely for students. Colac Primary will continue to report using progression points and a 5-point achievement scale as required by the Victorian Department of Education and Training. Student reports will be available on Compass towards the end of term. Kind regards
Shelby Papadopoulos, Principal

LIBRARY NEWS WITH MRS BRIFFA
Thank you to Room 10 for contributing to our
Remembrance Day Library display!
Grade 3 & 4 have been using the two picture
fiction texts “ Imagine You Are a Tiger” and “The
Desert” to trace food chains. Students have had
the opportunity to create their own illustrations
of creatures that are linked in a food chain.
“Tropical Terry” has been one of a string of
books in Prep to Grade 2 classes that consider
the importance of self - acceptance. Terry the
fish in his effort to stand out like the tropical fish
makes himself a spectacular tail. It soon
attracts the attention of a huge greedy eel! With
the advice of his true friends Terry sheds his tail
and does what he does best! He hides himself
from the predator so well that all the tropical fish
want to copy him and learn the art of
camouflage themselves!
Thank you to the Library team for their help this
term. Mrs Jean Newcombe is currently covering
new books, so borrowers keep a look out for
these on the shelves!

MR T’S SPORTS REPORT
Lunchtime Basketball
On Monday we had our basketball Grand Final.
It was a very tightly contested game with a good
crowd in to watch. The pressure was on from
the start where the defence made it hard for
both teams to score. Millah, Diesel along with
Isaiah and Rubie continued to run and dribble
trying to get their younger team mates involved.
In the end, the shooting accuracy, along with
the height and reach of Maddox proved too
good for the Clippers winning 26 – 21.
Presentations will be made at assembly
tomorrow.
In the end it was great to see all players
involved have a go and see some
improvement. Initially I was thinking of just
having Grade 3 to 6, but with a lot of our Grade
2 students playing outside of school it was great
to see them come in and try their hardest with
and against their bigger school mates.

Greater Western Golf
Last Tuesday we had Ella L, Ella C, Takira and
Darcy representing the school in the Greater
Western Golf championship at the Curlewis
Golf Club. From all reports from the players the
weather held out and they didn’t get too wet. On
a modified 9 hole course, all players tried
exceptionally hard and did quite well. Scores
from the day were Takira with 71, Ella C 79, Ella
L 82 and Darcy had 55. I’m not sure of the
winning girls score, but the winning boy had a
score of 39!! A huge thankyou to the parents for
taking these students on the day, it is very much
appreciated.
