How Do You See Christmas? The response to the responsorial psalms today says: “Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.” Seeing is believing. Make no mistake about it; being able to see is extremely important in our relationship with God. We react positively, negatively, fearfully or peacefully to people or things we see. However, there are two kinds of seeing, namely seeing through the physical eyes and seeing through the eye of faith. The former is natural and the latter is supernatural and only possible through the grace of God. Spiritual sight or “faith” (Heb 11:1) is purely God’s gift. This is important because how well we celebrate Christmas depends on the eye with which we see it. If we see it with the natural eye, then we will be caught up in the physical activities of Christmas – all the stress and preoccupations of the material side of things. We will not pay attention to the spiritual activities leading up to Christmas - the readings at Mass, the parish mission, the penance service or taking time to reflect on the mystery of the incarnation, or the place of Jesus in our lives. On the other hand, if we see Christmas with the eye of faith, then our attitude will be completely different. We will approach our celebrations with joyful anticipation, we will listen attentively to the readings and homilies with the ear of our hearts, we will take time to pray and meditate on God’s love for us and his gift of salvation in Christ Jesus. If Christmas is a spiritual celebration for us, we will marvel at Mary’s faith and role in our salvation. We will not only honor her, but we will strive to imitate her faithfulness to God. So where are you at this point in your spiritual journey? With what eye do you see Christmas, the eye of the flesh or the eye of faith? How can the manner in which you celebrate express your spiritual understanding of Christmas? Remember, it’s never too late to get it right or to do the right thing. May this Christmas bring you and your family joy and peace, Amen. I wish you a very Merry Christmas!

YOUTH MINISTRY
MINISTERIO JUVENIL
T’was the night before the night before Christmas and all through the church all those who serve were scurrying, especially the priest! Its one of those years where Christmas is so close to a Sunday that it creates 3 days straight of special services that seem to be non stop. Thats right folks we go straight from the 4th Sunday of Advent into Christmas Eve this year. When this event happens I hear people constantly saying things like “oh we will just skip church Sunday since we are going Christmas Eve or Christmas Day”. Wrong! We tend to try and justify our decisions for church especially when, wait for it, we might have to go to church more than once a week! Believe or not, there are people besides priest who go to mass every day, its actually ok to go more than once a week. Now that you have now detected my sarcasm and are wondering what I’m trying to get at here it is, during Christmas week we go to mass on Sunday to celebrate the 4th Sunday of Advent and then again to celebrate Christmas. There is a purpose to go to both. The mass on the fourth Sunday of Advent is finishing our preparation for Christmas. It would be like someone taking driving classes and they skip the last one which is parallel parking and then go to take their driving test anyway. They are not properly prepared for that test just like we are not properly prepared for Christmas. So as we finish this fourth Sunday and look forward to Christmas we go forth prepared to celebrate Christmas and the Christmas season. There is so much beauty in the mass, don’t miss it!

The day will begin with Praise and Worship. Each video presentation will be followed by small group discussion which ends with prayer in the small group.
Christohpher West Theology of the Body and the New Evangelization
Peter Herbeck Empowered to Evangelize
Sr, Miriam James Heidland The Decisive Encounter: Evangelizing from the Heart
All three video presentations were recorded at the New Evangelization Summit attended by committed Catholic disciples. However, they would engage Millennials as well as older adults whether or not they have prior knowledge of Scripture and Church teachings or personal knowledge of Jesus. They engage the intellect but more so, they have the power to inspire reflection and draw hearts to Christ.
DID YOU KNOW?
Keep an eye on those Christmas candles
Twelve percent of home fires caused by candles will occur in December — the combination of increased candle use and flammable decorations isn’t a good one, especially if candles aren’t used safely. Never leave candles burning in a room you are not in, or while you’re sleeping. Clear the area before lighting a candle, making sure that the flame will be contained, that there’s nothing flammable nearby, and that the candle is safely out of reach for children. If you have plans for a fire in your fireplace, check your chimney to make sure it’s clean. For more tips, visit https://www.nsc.org/home-safety/tools-resources/seasonal-safety/winter/holiday.
MEMORIES AND DREAMS Throughout our lives, we retain the language and habits of our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our home after a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and practices. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an underground river and accompanies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollecting, we are in turn gathered up and re-collected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure travelling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pro-nouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord’s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. The memories of her people are alive in her, and memories of her nourish our own living faith. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
