CLUB BULLETIN SI POOLE
SEPTEMBER 2017
Quiz
Our next meeting will be on Monday 11th September at Salterns Hotel at 7.30pm. Our speaker will be Tricia Marlow from Bees Abroad . Their strap line is Relieving poverty through Beekeeping. As many of you know beekeeping is close to the hearts of more than one of our members! The aim of Bees Abroad is to provide education and technical advice in beekeeping and the relevant business skills. They are particu-larly keen to ensure that their intervention provides long term potential financial security. This should be a fascinating talk . As usual supper in the bar from 6.15pm—see you there! 'Please start to collect up pre-loved men's ties! These will be used by
the Purple Community Fund to make items such as glasses cases and waistcoats. The items are made by human trafficking survivors, giving them a skill and an income. Please bring ties to the 5th October
conference at The Lighthouse where there will be a collecting box. Alternatively, Jane Walker, founder and CEO of Purple Community Fund, is our speaker at our Charter Dinner so it'd be fine to bring them along then too. Many thanks , Liz Rodgers
CHARTER DINNER 16th OCTOBER 2017
Invitations have all gone out—
please shout if you haven’t received yours!
Last year’s event at Poole Yacht Club was a great success with
excellent food, lovely surroundings and of course
fantastic company! .
Jane Walker from the Purple Community Fund is our guest
speaker and will I am sure entertain us thoroughly as well as
giving us some more food for thought.
Birthdays
No September birthdays, but Jane
and Mary both celebrated theirs in
August - belated birthday wishes
to you both.
As always, we welcome guests at our meetings, so please let me know if you would like to bring anyone along on Monday. Thank you, Helen.
We have been out and about in
our ‘quiet’ month and a half Lots
of fun …..and lots of good works—
just how it should be !
This edition of the bulletin
combines photos of what we have
been up to with lots of information
on what is coming up.
Those of you who know Gra-ham Starr from Poole Lions will be sad to know that his lovely wife Sylvia died
suddenly on 15th August at Forest Holme. Her funeral is on Tuesday 12 September 2017 at 1:00 at St Johns Church, Broadstone followed by a private family committal at Poole Crematorium. Donations to Forest Holme can be made via the Tapper Funeral Service website.

What we have been up to
Some people just went shopping!
Ana and Julie went to ASDA to spend the money which we raised from our recent raffle for AOK rucksacks. They both had great fun—as you can see—and made a special effort to buy matching items for their start up packs. Thanks again to everyone who contributed to the raffle and to Julie and Ana for the time they gave to shopping. Ana has been trying to get to AKA rucksacks to deliver the items but they have been on holiday.
COFFEE MORNING JULY 23rd
There was a fantastic turnout at Carol’s house and everyone was very generous with
contributions and—looking at the photo! - portions!
This is an extract from Mar’s email to us all.
“I am delighted to say that we made a grand
total of £360 !! As you know the money raised
will pay for more bras to be shipped onwards on
their journey to Mozambique, El Salvador and
Uganda.
£360 will enable us to ship over 70 kilos of bras,
roughly 1000 bras, enough to set up 10 more
survivors of sex trafficking in their own small bra
selling business. This will earn them a decent
living wage and by taking them out of poverty,
will keep them safe from being re-trafficked.”
'All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players' . Julie, Jane and Liz were in the audi-ence ’ when Brownsea Open Air Theatre put on ‘As you Like It’ in July and August - and Alison backstage in charge of the amazing props. Clearly a lovely summer evening!

WIMBORNE ST GILES AFTERNOON TEA
The Enjoyment theme continues !
A magnificent £500 + profit was realised last Sunday at Wimborne St Giles.
Really generous donations of excellent cakes and other goodies means that our
charity fund is now more healthy. Everyone’s individual contributions on the
day were really appreciated—too many to name. There were many
compliments on our welcome and also—crucially—the quality of the cakes and
other food which was provided! Well done and thank you so much to everyone
for time , organisation, culinary expertise and being wonderful people. We were
delighted to see friends from other organisations who also came to help and
support us. Looking forward to next year!

preparation.

Everything under control?
Those in the power house—
washing up and making and
serving endless tea and coffee!

Club Auditor/Reviewer - please read very carefully and consider whether you can help
From Jane Club Treasurer
We have struggled to find someone to replace Ray Baldachinno who kindly examined our annual accounts free of charge for many years. At the executive meeting on Monday it was mentioned that at least one other Soroptimist club uses their own member (s) to review the accounts. The executive committee agreed to raise this idea with the club for discussion for our own accounts. If this proposal was agreed we would be seeking a volunteer (s) from anyone who felt able to be a reviewer.
A short summary of a guideline to carrying out an examination is given below:
Receive accounts and working papers
Scan the accounts for obvious errors
Confirm last year’s figures agree to signed accounts
Check totals from cash books have been transferred to trial balance and accounts correctly
Review lead schedules, e.g. bank reconciliation and other balance sheet item and agree to rec-ords and accounts
Check a sample of receipts and payments to underlying documentation
The reviewer will sign the following statement:
‘I have examined the financial statements on pages 1 to 3 of SI of Poole. In my opinion they are properly drawn up and are in agreement with the books and records of the club.’
Signed and dated.
There is a fairly quick turnaround as the accounts have to be prepared after the year end which is the last day of
February and they need to be reviewed and signed off in time to be circulated for the AGM. As an estimate I would say we would be asking for the accounts to be reviewed over the second or third week in March.
The current year is likely to be a quiet year and so it would be a good year to begin with. Jane will bring last year’s file which was given to Ray to the meeting on Monday 11th September.
As the term ‘audit’ had professional regulations/responsibilities it is proposed that we come up with a different term to auditor. Something like reviewer may be more appropriate. Certainly similar organisations to ours have gone down this route .
