Enhancing face-to-face Teaching: Flipping Lectures

What is a “Flipped Lecture”?

It is a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture and

homework elements are reversed.

Students watch the lecture at home and class time is used

for activities, discussions and projects.

Flexibility Students can access the material at

any time and prepare for the class at

their own pace. They can watch,

rewind, pause, fast-forward the

lecture to allow for deeper

understanding.

Inclusion Lectures are more accessible to

students with special needs

(hearing impairment, dyslexia, etc)

and will be more clearly understood

by those for whom English is not their

first language or those who just find it

hard to make notes while following a

lecture.

Engagement Students will feel more engaged

throughout the course when

preparing for the class and

participating in the projects and

discussions. Class time will be used

for collaboration and sharing while

also allowing time to discuss issues

and questions.

“This is what I had been looking for for ages”

“It’s the best teaching I’ve ever had, I can’t wait

to do it again”

“I got to interact myself with them [the students]

longer and in more depth”

“I could see a lot of the sort of coming alive [...]

you could see their brains sort of switching on”

“Somehow I felt I was in control of my studies and

how much I can gain out of it.”

“In a normal class usually the students are

generally very quiet but here preparing

beforehand actually forced everyone to discuss

answers, share their thoughts, views and ideas a

lot more than any of the other classes, and that

lets you get a wider perspective on it.”

“I found the new differing structure of seminars

and lectures very engaging and useful.”

“The entire way the module is structured (lectures

online + extended class) is the most useful way of

learning I have had this year.”
