2013 ANNUAL REPORT WITH 2014 HIGHLIGHTS
70th Anniversary
It’s our Platinum Anniversary and a reflection of
our commitment to the community. Started in
tumultuous times – just as World War II was
drawing to a close – the foundation has been a
key contributor to good works in Leelanau
Township since 1945. Join with us in 2015 as we
celebrate our 70th anniversary! Stay tuned.
From Our Board Chair and Executive Director
In Memory:George W. Anderson
“There hasn’t been a day in my life that George Wrisley Anderson
wasn’t there. I’ll remember his smile, his interest in others, his
aention to the community and especially to Northport. He will
be greatly missed by so many. God Bless you George.”
George W. Anderson was the longest
serving trustee of the Leelanau Township
Community Foundation with 29 years on the
board. He served as a member of the investment
commiee until his death and was a tireless
promoter and fundraiser for the organization.
Aer his passing George’s Facebook page was filled
with comments and memorial statements. This one from
Omena native Mary Hallet Stanton echoed the sentiment
of much of the community:
A Northport-Omena native, George earned a degree at UofM and a medal for
bravery in Korea, then came home to run the family’s general store. He also
started the Depot Restaurant and the George W. Anderson Insurance Agency.
In addition to the foundation George volunteered as a firefighter, on the
village council, at Trinity Church, the local Masonic lodge and S.C.O.R.E. He
helped found the Leelanau Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, organized the
Run for Funds, emceed the Memorial Day services and, most recently, founded
and served as Market Master of the Northport Farmers Market.
In 2010 George was recognized at the foundation’s 65th Anniversary
celebration for his service. We have all benefied greatly from George’s
ongoing passion and vision for Leelanau Township.
Dear Friends,
What does the Leelanau Township Community Foundation do? It’s a common question.
Simply put, the community foundation is an independent, tax exempt charitable organization created by and for people like YOU. Because we are uniquely positioned
locally, we have an opportunity to lead in ways others cannot. Community foundations know how to bring together resources and connect people with each other to find commonalities.
In 2015, the foundation celebrates 70 years as a trusted steward for philanthropy in Leelanau Township. During these 70 years we have built a solid reputation. However, with recent focus group feedback, it sometimes appears that knowledge of our work is not as widespread as it ought to be. We’re exploring new and different ways to share our story. As we work to improve our visibility we maintain our focus on our historic mission as the first and largest financial resource for many community projects. We relish telling the foundation’s story…how we’ve made a difference in areas that enhance our community. The foundation has been a critical player in early childhood education and college scholarships, health and wellness, community arts and culture, recreation, preservation of our natural and historic places, community and economic vitality. Please call Joan Moore, our Executive Director at 231-386-9000 to find out how you CAN make a difference.
As my time on this board comes to an end, I would like to thank you, our supporters, for your contributions to the foundation. Finally, I want to sincerely thank my fellow trustees whom I have worked with these last 12 years and to our current Executive Director, Joan Moore. With your support, we are working hard to put the needs of our community first.
We are looking forward to celebrating 70 years of philanthropy in Leelanau Township.
Thank you,
Eugenie Sco von HoltLeelanau Township Community Foundation Chair
Hello Community Members,
This has been another very busy year at your community foundation.
We continue to work to find ways to help meet the needs that arise in our community. I can tell you that the LTCF is a shining example of how to do
just that. In 2013, I was invited to speak on behalf of the foundation and the community at the annual Council of Michigan Foundation’s State conference on how a small foundation can make a big difference.
This allowed me to highlight the visioning work we’ve done over the past several years in coordination with the village, the township, business owners and community members. These efforts include New Horizons, Future by Design, Small Town Design Initiative and the 2012 Designing and Achieving Our Potential Economic Strategy plan. We now see the results of these efforts to revitalize our area in our re-energized community.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors and volunteers, particularly those who participated in the community focus groups, and the careful management of assets by the board of trustees, we are doing well and have grant funds available for non-profit organizations in the township.

“Having the opportunity to apply for scholarships like those administered by the
foundation is the type of encouragement that keeps students going,” says Northport High
School and Michigan Technological University graduate Esther Johnson who received the
Winfield H. and Dr. Grace Song Line Scholarship in 2005.
“It’s wonderful to be recognized by your own community,” she adds. “Geing the foundation
scholarship is a real honor and gave me the encouragement from my community to move forward.”
Johnson graduated from Michigan Tech aer four years with a BS in Civil Engineering
and moved to the Detroit area to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
She chose to pursue a career with the Corps of Engineers because of her interest
in ecosystem restoration and in protecting the environment and the resources
of the Great Lakes.
“Growing up in Leelanau County I learned to love and respect the outdoors and the
lakes,” Esther says. “It makes me proud to work for an organization whose
mission is to support the Great Lakes.
“The Leelanau Township Community Foundation is an organization
that helped enrich my education and gave me the support I
needed to start my first year of college confidently. Knowing
that the community I grew up in was interested in
seeing me succeed gave me the drive to accomplish
my goals in education,” she adds.
Leelanau Children’s Center
Geing the youngest members of our community
off to a good start is the focus of the Leelanau
Children’s Center. Former foundation president Basil
Antenucci – a retiree from the Michigan Department
of Education – was particularly concerned about
making it possible for children from families of
limited means to aend the Northport center.
He was starting a scholarship campaign to do just
that when he passed away unexpectedly. His legacy
to the center lives on in the Basil Antenucci Leelanau
Children’s Center Scholarship Fund, which is
managed by the foundation.
Shady Trails Camp
Scholarship funds from
the foundation – and in
2013 a grant to Northport
Public School’s summer school
program – help local students have a
very special summer experience. Shady
Trails Camp, located half way between Omena
and Northport, provides summer educational
activities that focus on environmental education –
learning to understand and appreciate our beautiful
community. Not only is aending Shady Trails a great
learning experience, but students love their time
exploring the woods and the shoreline of the camp.
Blessings in a Backpack
The rate of poverty in Leelanau County has a
devastating impact on our youngest citizens, especially
those who depend on free and reduced breakfast and
lunch offerings for much of their school year nutrition.
When those children head home on Friday they could
be facing a weekend without food if it weren’t for
Blessings in a Backpack. In 2013 the Youth Advisory
Council of the Leelanau Township Community
Foundation reviewed and recommended a grant
to help the program – part of Leelanau Christian
Neighbors – to buy a freezer to expand their
weekly offerings.

How will you be remembered when you are gone?
Supporting the Leelanau Township Community
Foundation is one way to have a lasting impact on
the community you love. It shows a concern for
today and a desire to invest in the community’s
future. Your support makes it possible for the
foundation to invest in projects that make our
community beer.
Many of you support the foundation annually,
some with major gis. You may want to establish
a new program, create scholarships, support
community institutions or memorialize a loved
one. All are important.
Still, during our lifetime it’s not always possible
to be as generous as you’d like. One option is to
include the Community Foundation in your estate
plan. A designation to the foundation can be any size
and may complement distributions to family and
other charities.
Please consider including the foundation in your
estate plan, either through cash, securities, life
insurance, real estate or other assets. To choose the
best donation for your situation, we encourage you to
seek advice from your financial advisor or aorney.
Your legacy gi can support your passions if you
direct it to a specific concern. Or you can make your
gi to the foundation’s general endowment, leaving
it to the board of trustees to use these funds where
most needed. Our staff and trustees can describe
the different ways your gi might be made and to
answer any questions you or your advisors may have.
Your bequest to the community foundation will
show generations to come that you cared about
our community and that your generosity is making
a difference.
Jim and Marjorie Leenhouts
Jim Leenhouts named his 42-foot power catamaran
“Catalyst.” The retired development chemist of Dow
Chemical knows that catalysts, as he says, “make
things happen.”
He is a catalyst, too. Along with his wife, Marge, he has
named the Leelanau Township Community Foundation
in their will. The bequest will help make things happen
into the future.
Making things happen runs in his family. Grandfather
Orin A. Ward founded Northport Point in 1899.
The couple, in their mid-80s, live at the Point and
in Key Largo, Florida.
“If you invest a lot of your time and energy to live
here – and you don’t have to live here – this area must
appeal to you,” he says. “It is terrific, but it can be
beer. You shouldn’t stop giving to the library or the
Children’s Center or whatever turns you on. But it’s
good to give to the umbrella organization, too – the
community foundation.”
The LTCF has been named as a beneficiary in the
Leenhouts’ trust since 1991. It is one of a handful of
non-profits that will share 10 percent of the couples’
charitable contributions, what Jim calls the “do good”
portion of their legacy.
The couple’s legacy bequest to the foundation is
unspecified. That is, the board may decide how to use it
because Jim says he simply wants the money to go to
“where others may see the priorities beer.”

Ann Marie Mitchell
Leelanau UnCaged
We are indebted to Ann Marie,
who le the foundation board
at the end of 2013, for her
tireless work on behalf of the
foundation’s goal to be a catalyst
for community efforts to make
Leelanau Township a beer place
to live, work and play. Ann Marie
was a key figure in the
foundation’s visioning projects,
taking a leadership role in Future
by Design and Designing and
Achieving our Potential. We are
delighted that she continues to
give of her time and talent to the
community with her ongoing
work with the Leadership Team,
which was created through
Designing and Achieving
our Potential.
Leelanau UnCaged is the brainchild of the Leadership
Team formed for the foundation sponsored program
Designing and Achieving Our Potential. This one day
of special events brought music, art, agriculture,
small business vendors and hundreds of people to
Northport for one day in late September to celebrate
the uniqueness of our community. The community
came together and welcomed visitors to a day-long
celebration that closed Northport’s downtown streets
for a joyous event that even included the school
homecoming parade.

Youth Advisory Council Takes ActionIn 2013 Northport’s Advisory Council conducted a needs assessment survey to determine what topics were important to youth in our community. The study, which involved students from sixth to twelh grade, included questions on peer pressure, time management and extracurricular activities. The results helped YAC focus their projects and grant making recommendations for the 2013-2014 school year.
A key issue identified in the needs assessment was student bullying, which
led to an anti-bullying Socratic seminar for students in grades seven through 12.
Students screened the film Bully, then split into small discussion groups where students shared their personal experiences and feelings about bullying and brainstormed ideas to fix the bullying epidemic in American schools.
Other projects and activities for 2013-2014 included:
• Aending a regional Council of Michigan Foundations training in Cadillac.
• Awarding funds to the NPS Honor Society for the annual holiday ‘Giving Tree’ which served 13 families including 45 NPS students.
• Provided funding for ‘Exposures’, a county-wide publication of student art and literary works.
• Made grants to the Zonta Club of Leelanau County, Leelanau UnCaged, the Northport Youth Sailing School, Shady Trails Camp, and the Northport Public School Aer-School program.
