SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

LA GRANGE – A 22-year-old manwas shot about 2:45 p.m. Monday in thezero to 100 block of Washington Ave-nue in La Grange.

The La Grange Police Departmentreported it received several 911 callsabout a drive-by shooting in the area ofCalendar andWashington avenues. Of-ficers responded to the area and foundnumerous people standing in the streetsurrounding a man who had been shotin the lower abdomen.

Police said themanwas transportedto Loyola University Medical Centerin Maywood and was listed in stablecondition after surgery Monday night.

After interviewing people on thescene, witnesses said they heard threeto four gun shots and then saw a grayDodge four-door vehicle flee north onWashington Avenue.

Police said there was no descriptionof an offender available at this time intheir investigation.

Monday’s shooting was the secondin La Grange in two months. A 16-year-old man was shot in the leg two blocksfrom Monday night’s shooting about

10:45 p.m. Nov. 21 in the area of Cal-ender and Sawyer avenues. Police re-sponded to the area after shots werereported but could not locate anyone. They learned the teenager was shot af-ter he arrived at La Grange MemorialHospital looking for treatment for mi-nor injuries.

In November, police said they didnot believe the shooting was a drive-by shooting or gang related, but an ar-gument between the teen and severalfriends and a group of men in their lateteens or early 20s.

On Friday, investigators said thecase for the shooting in November wasongoing, and the victim continued torefuse to cooperate with their investi-gation.

In a news release, the La GrangePolice Department said the shootingMonday was not believed to be randomand the victim was targeted. Police arewaiting to interview the man, who wasshot, more thoroughly, according tothe release.

3Holiday sales break local recordsBy DIANE KRIEGER [email protected]

LAGRANGE –With holidaysales up as much as 60 percentover 2013 at businesses in LaGrange, business and govern-ment leaders in thevillage ofLaGrange think they’ve touchedon a formula for success.

The village of La Grangeand the La Grange BusinessAssociation expanded the an-nual Hometown Holiday Walkof years past into a full-blownholiday marketing blitz thatkicked off with a wildly suc-cessful Small Business Satur-day event Nov. 29, 2014.

The blitz was highlightedby the Unwrap La Grange for aHometown Holiday campaign, which La Grange Business As-sociation President Phil Forn-aro said was to “emphasize thesmall town holiday experienceto a wider audience ... and toemphasize the amenities of LaGrange, starting off with theholiday shopper rewards pro-gram.

“This was the first year werolled out this concept and itwas an educational process forparticipating businesses andlocal consumers, which wasvery successful,” Fornaro said.

That success, Fornaro be-lieves was due to the exposureof the association promotion, the engagement of participatingmembers, a more positive eco-nomic climate and excitementin the community, he said.

“Good weather alwayshelps. This campaign is part ofour overall effort to encourageresidents or visitors to sup-port our neighborhood busi-nesses,” Fornaro said. “Theincrease in revenue is a testa-ment to the marketing powerof the LGBA and quality of LaGrange businesses.”

Plans are already under-way to expand the program forthe 2015 holiday season.

Becca Klinger, co-owner ofGreen It Up! Gift Shop, whichsaw the greatest sales increase– 60 percent – said the efforts ofthe bussiness association paidoff in big dividends for busi-ness owners.

Klinger said her store’sre-branding and name changea fewmonths ago likely helpedboost sales as well, but otherbusinesses saw 18, 30, 40 and 45percent increases.

“The LGBA really promotedSmall Business Saturday andour business span was SmallBusiness Saturday until Christ-mas Eve,” Klinger said. “That

was really where we saw thebulk of our holiday business.LGBA promoted it to drive a lotof attention to town. We got areally great return on that.”

Klinger also hailed thecustomer rewards promo-

tion, which also was tried outduring the holidays.

“Shopping locally really sup-ports the local community andthe dollars stay within the com-munity, so it’s beneficial for ev-erybody to shop yourmom-and-

popMainStreet stores andkeeptheir local economy alive andthriving,” Klinger said.

Tom Livingston, presidentof the village of La Grange, praised local business ownersfor the fruitful campaign.

“We’ve got to hand it to ourbusinesses,” Livingston said.“They’re always innovativeand they tried some new pro-motions this year.

“I credit the businesses forthe energy they put into reallyselling La Grange, collective-ly. The partnership betweenthe village and the businesseshas been a game changer, webelieve, for the village. It al-lows us to put greater resourc-es back into our community.”

It’s Your MoneyBy Linda Sokol Francis, E.A.

IRA ROLLOVER RULES EXPLAINEDThe Internal Revenue Service does not alwaysoffer the clearest explanations. The first set ofrules about IRA rollovers were so fuzzy that the

changes were put off until this January 1.

Understand that in true rollover, the money is transferred directly tothe owner, who then has 60 days to put it into another IRA or have topay taxes - and maybe a penalty - on the money. (And the IRS is sticky;being even one day late can cost taxes and penalties.) Originally, one could roll over each IRA once a year, no matter how many IRAsone had. No more. Now, an IRA owner can do just one rollover in a12-month period, period.

What hasn’t changed, though, is the trustee-to-trustee transfer, inwhich the owner never actually touches the money. There are no limitson how many such transfers can be made. Many financial expertsconsider such transfers much safer, feeling that it can be dangerous totreat IRAs as a source of short-term loans.

McCOOK – For a town with only 231residents, the McCook Athletic & Ex-position Center, or the MAX, at 4750 S.Vernon Ave., is massive.

Not only is it the site of many indoorsoccer games and even baseball prac-tices, but the MAX also is the home ofthe newly formed Max-PRC ElectricFlying Club.

“This was an amazing find,” DavePrintz, a Burr Ridge resident and orga-nizer of the PRC Electric Flying Club, said of the MAX.

Printz and a couple of guys from theoutdoor Palos R/C Flying Club, whichflies gas-powered airplanes, helicop-ters, drones, kites and more, foundedPRC Electric Club in July 2014 whentheywere looking for an indoor facilityto fly their electric airplanes.

According to Printz, the groupsports about 75 members from ages 8to 90. In good, summer weather, thegroup meets monthly at the WillowSprings Community Center and reg-ularly heads to Cook County’s forestpreserves to fly their planes. Members Bill Ackerman - [email protected]

Pace seeking fundingfor $2.3 billion project

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

Pace is banking on a longshot to find a shortcut to fund-ing a two-step transportationplan that would improve busservice to the suburbs in asix-county area.

Pace has submitted a $2.3billion plan to the U.S. Depart-ment of Transportation for re-view through the Projects ofNational and Regional Impor-tance program, with the hopeits plan will be picked for fund-ing fromnumerous other planssubmitted from transportationagencies around the country.

The Rapid Transit Net-work has two components:The Arterial Bus Rapid Tran-sit System would add routesand enhanced stations runon an express basis with lessfrequent stops, and the reno-vation of Pulse stations wouldprovide easier access to buses

and have an improved wait-ing environment, as well aselectrical signage indicatingbus arrival times.

The Suburban ExpresswayService essentially would ex-pand the service initiated in2011 on Interstate 55 wherebuses ride on expresswayshoulders to the far west sub-urbs and back to such desti-nations as the U of I campusin Chicago and Union Station.

To support the express ser-vice, commuter lotswere builtin Bolingbrook, Burr Ridge,Plainfield and Romeoville.

Under Pace’s submittedproposal, Pace spokesmanPatrick Wilmot said the ex-pressway service wouldgrow to include highway andtollways in six counties, in-cluding Cook, DuPage, Kane,Lake, McHenry and Will.

“A lot of this is aimed attrying to reduce travel times,”

Wilmot said. “Buses will beable to travel along these cor-ridors more quickly.”

The $2.3 billion cost for theplan includes purchasingmorebuses, the constructionof threegarage facilities and technolo-gy that allows buses to commu-nicate with traffic signals.

Pace has a pilot programwith IDOT in Chicago’s southsuburbs where buses com-municate with traffic signals– much in the same way firetrucks and emergency vehi-cles can – to allow buses topass through traffic signals ifa bus is running late or to cleara bus from a busy intersectionafter passengers disembark.

“But this is a lower level ofpriority,” Wilmot said. “Oursystem sends a request to thesignal. It will only change ifit doesn’t negatively impactthe traffic flow on the crossstreet.”

Zalewski to push forcriminal justice reform

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

State Rep. Michael Zalews-ki, D-Riverside, said com-prehensive criminal justicereform, appropriate statefunding for local schools andcontinued progress toward astronger economy and saferneighborhoods are at the topof the list in 2015.

Zalewski joined colleaguesJan. 13 to be sworn in asmembers of the 99th GeneralAssembly in a ceremony atthe University of Illinois atSpringfield. Major changes forstate government under Gov.Bruce Rauner’s new Republi-can leadership may be on thehorizon.

“I look forward to workingwith the new governor and mycolleagues in the House on bal-ancing our state budget and onthe issues that matter most tothe residents of my district,”Zalewski stated in a news re-lease.

Zalewski said he and mem-

bers of the Joint Criminal Jus-tice Reform Committee plan tokeep working on how Illinoiscan start reducing penaltiesfor low-level drug offensesand thefts while also lookingat how sentences requiringoffenders to serve minimumperiods behind bars affectthe population and offenders’chances of committing addi-tional crimes.

“We need to have a seriousdebate about who are we put-ting behind bars and why,”Zalewski stated. “We want tocreate a system that redirectslow-level offenders who donot need to be imprisoned andwho should not return oncethey are released and thatlocks away violent, danger-ous criminals to prevent themfrom wreaking havoc on ourstreets.”

Zalewski said he also willbe working on legislation topromote locking devices onprescription pill bottles to de-ter abuse.

SPRINGFIELD – Sometimes elected officials forget who’sthe boss. They think they are accountable only to themselves.

The reality is it’s the voters who put them in office and thetaxpayers who pay the bills who are in charge. At least that ishow things are supposed to work. At the very least, we deserveto know how elected officialsare spending our money.

All too often elected offi-cials are as transparent as aslab of concrete. A good casein point is the College of DuP-age. Last week, that suburbancommunity college board voted to give $762,000 to the college’spresident, Robert Breuder so he would resign.

That’s an awful lot of money to pay someone to do nothing.More importantly, it’s our money. And the board of that publicinstitution is mum about why they want him to quit or, moreimportantly, why they think he deserves almost double the an-nual salary of the president of the United States to do nothing.

That’s the height of arrogance. But it’s not a particularlyuncommon situation for elected officials to be so secretive.

The biggest items in just about any governmental entities’budget are salaries. And yet, when school boards, city councilsand other local governments vote on contracts for their union-ized employees, they often don’t let the public know the detailsuntil after the measure has been approved.

Apparently, they don’t want to hear opinions of voters be-fore they consider a measure. How pathetic.

Shouldn’t the public know the particulars of the contractbefore the vote?

State Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, thinks so. During the lastlegislative session, she pushed for a measure to require local gov-ernments to post the details of labor contacts well before a vote.

The measure died. There is no telling what government transparency bills will

be introduced this year. Some of the bills may be good, othersnot so much. But one thing is certain: More transparency isneeded. As former Gov. Jim Edgar used to say of government,“Sunshine is the best disinfectant.”

And elected officials should remember: The public needs toknow.

OUR VIEW

State Rep. Michael Zalewski, D-Riverside,said something recently in a news releasethat sounded great to us.

Zalewski, whose district includes LaGrange, La Grange Park and Countryside, among other towns, said: “I look forward toworking with the new governor and my col-leagues in the House on balancing our statebudget and on the issues that matter most tothe residents of my district.”

That first part, about working with thegovernor, is an attention grabber. Sure, pol-iticians the world over often make a habitof playing nice in the immediate aftermathof a regime change. But in Illinois, whereeven getting along for appearances’ sakecan sometimes be a bridge too far for many, such rhetoric may be seen as a sign of prog-ress.

And progress is what voters expect. Il-linois, a blue state that hasn’t voted for aRepublican for president since 1988, didn’tturn Pat Quinn out of office just because ofa perceived lack of leadership. It was be-cause Bruce Rauner offers hope of a differ-ent way of doing business in Springfield, and that’s something that’s desperatelyneeded.

Does that mean we expect Zalewski andRauner to become fast friends and agreewitheach other on every issue? Of course not. Onissues where they truly have deep-seatedconvictions that can’t be reconciled, theyshould each stick to their guns. But thatshouldn’t happen with every issue, or evenvery many issues.

Among the topics where voters expectthe two parties to find room to compromiseare:

• A solution that brings about real pen-sion reform, whether the Illinois SupremeCourt strikes down the existing law or not.The state retirement plans’ shortfall hasbeen estimated at more than $100 billion, and there’s no path to solvency for thestate that doesn’t include a real solutionhere.

• Some certainty on the tax rate. Raun-er campaigned on letting the Quinn-era taxhikes expire. We’re in favor of that, but it’sgot to be done in a measured, responsibleway so that the loss of that income doesn’tcripple essential state programs.

• Stemming the outflow of people andbusinesses. We’ve been hearing for yearsthat Indiana and Wisconsin, among otherstates, are eagerly snatching up Illinois busi-nesses.

Now comes word that so many residentsleft the state in 2014 that it suffered a net lossin population of 10,000 people.

• A host of other issues, such as transpor-tation, education funding, property taxes, balancing budgets and more.

The voters clearly liked a lot of what theyheard from Rauner on the campaign trail, but he can’t rule by decree (nor would wewant him to).

It’s going to take legislators like Zalewskifollowing up their kind words withmeaning-ful action to get Illinois out of the financialtailspin it’s in.

Zalewski, legislaturemustturn words into action

SOUND OFF

Address La Grange traffic backupI recently have the new, unfavorable

task of driving through the intersectionof Ogden Avenue and La Grange Road, specifically westbound Ogden [Avenue]approaching La Grange Road. Drivingunder that train overpass, I must say, thebackup is a disaster during rush hour, morning and afternoon. With all the dis-cussion and lawsuits over the abandonedproperty where the YMCA was, can thevillage of La Grange wake up – and whilenothing has been built there yet – add amuch needed right turn lane there fromthe road that leads down to that parkextended to La Grange Road? Move a fewpoles, cut away some of those emptycement lots there, put a traffic signalthat has a green arrow that allows forright turns onto La Grange Road while LaGrange Road traffic is turning left ontoOgden [Avenue], and that back-up willease up two-fold.

Show courtesy to neighborsTo owners with barking dogs: When

your dogs are barking continuously atpeople walking their dogs or just peopleout walking or something else, come outof your house and correct your dog andbring them in. We know dogs bark, butnot for 15 minutes to an hour nonstop. We know you hear them, but you donothing. Please have some commoncourtesy for your neighbors.

Not a ridiculous complaintI would like to respond to what I saw

today about ridiculous complaints. Peopleare mad that snow is left on their drive-ways. When you’ve had 2.5 feet of snowand had back surgery and you can’t get itshoveled, can’t get in or out of your drive-way, that’s not a ridiculous complaint.

Sounding off about Sound OffI enjoy the Sound Off column. I likepeople sounding off, expressing theirfeelings, giving their opinions. I’m evenfor expanding the column space. That’sme, sounding off.

Why does Westmont botherwith mosquito abatement?I have been a Westmont resident for

10 years. During that time, Westmonthas spent about $1 million on mosquitoabatement. In these very pages, West-mont’s own village manager was quotedas saying that treating for mosquitoes(spraying, etc.) was “about as effectiveas trying to shoot a mosquito with a BBgun.” Indeed, other neighboring com-

munities with much higher per-capitaeducation and income, do not treat formosquitoes. I would ask Westmontleadership, yet again, please not tospend another $75,000 to $100,000on mosquito abatement. If you reallyfeel compelled to do something aboutmosquitoes, equally as effective, go tothe local department store and buy a BBgun for $39.99. We, the taxpayers, willbe thankful.

Stop feeding the geeseI live in Westmont, on North Park

Street, just south of Ogden Avenue. There is a [person] who continues tofeed geese, Canada geese – they’rejust overrunning the neighborhood, andI just think it’s awful. I don’t think it’sright, and I think it’s disgusting becausethese geese are obviously not starving.… They’re wild animals; just leave themalone. You are not contributing to theirwelfare. You are disturbing the neigh-borhood.

Travel with sense in the darkWe live, drive, walk in Downers Grove,

but where is the intelligence and com-mon sense? Those of you who commuteby train to and from work should realizethat most of you wear black clothing, and it is not visible in the dark. Manyare walking while cellphone-talking andnot observing stop signs, traffic lights orpedestrian walkways. You put yourselvesand drivers at risk. This also applies tothose drivers who do not put on yourlights at dawn or dusk. Folks, it’s notabout whether you can see, but whetheryou can be seen.

come from all over the Western Sub-urbs to join in the fun.

While the Palos R/C Flying Clubaccommodated many types of planesto fly outdoors, there wasn’t a nearbyfacility to accommodate indoor flying. Not until this past July, that is.

While most people may be familiarwith model airplanes flown outdoors, electric airplanes are a subset all theirown, Printz said. Electric planes op-erate how you might expect. They flyvia a remote control or transmitter, but they normally are much smallerin size than typical outdoor modelplanes.

“The sizes of electric planes rangefrom a drone that can fit in the palm ofyour hand to something with a wing-span of about 3 feet,” Printz said.

Typical outdoor model airplanes av-erage 3 to 5 feet in size, and some use agas engine to fly, Printz said.

Because of their smaller size andadvances in technology, electric air-planes aren’t difficult to fly indoors;they just need a good amount ofspace.

That’s where the MAX comes in.Prior to flying at the MAX, Printzwould travel 50 miles round trip to afacility called Legends Sportsplex inBradley-Bourbonnais to fly. Printzhad gone to other recreational facili-ties in Bensenville and Oak Lawn, butneither had accessible flying times oreven ceilings that were high enoughfor a good flight. It wasn’t until Printz’slandscaper mentioned his kids playedsoccer at the MAX that he got the ideato fly planes there.

“We love having the guys here,”said Grant Carrigan, general mangerat the MAX. “They’re just a good groupof users.”

It’s a mutual partnership. The PRCElectric Flying Club makes use of thefacility during some off hours, and theMAX serves as an ideal location for theclub to fly.

“They have an absolute love for

this hobby, and they come and have ablast,” Carrigan said.

Printz said the MAX is a great placefor many reasons. A few of them be-ing the MAX’s 40-foot ceilings, optimallighting and use of AstroTurf.

“The AstroTurf is great because it’sso forgiving if you crash your plane,”Printz said. “We thought we mightneed to lay a hard surface over it atfirst, but the planes are able to take offjust fine.”

The MAX-PRC Electric Flying Clubmeets from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdaysand Thursdays in McCook. The clubalso meets from 9 p.m. to midnight onthe first Monday of the month for Ni-te-Flites so people busy during the daycan get a chance to fly as well.

Printz said a great opportunity fornewcomers to get a sense of the fun isat their open flight events. The clubwill host their next open flight March2 at the MAX. Newcomers withoutplanes of their own will have the op-portunity to test-fly planes at the openflight event. Two trainer airplanes willbe available with assistance from clubmembers.

“You can teach yourself how tofly now because the technology is sogood,” Printz said of the ease of pickingup the hobby.

The prices have come down, too, making it more affordable to hobbyistwho are looking to get involved.

The cost for an electric plane rangesfrom $90 to $180, Printz said.

For information, visit the group’swebsite at www.palosrc.com or emailDave Printz at [email protected].

GLEN ELLYN – Newcomera toda madre is a testamentto the importance of culinarybalance. The Mexican eatery, transplanted to Glen Ellyn byGeneva’s Bien Trucha, openedlate in 2014, with equal partssophistication and comfort.

Nestled in the heart ofdowntown, the small-towncharm of the restaurant’s sur-roundings provides a pleasantcontrast to its elegant, urbaninterior.

Behind the bar is anexposed brick wall boasting avast array of tequila. The vin-tage molding on the ceiling isglazed an elegant white. Mod-ern blue tiles cover the floorof the bar, while the diningroom is softened by hardwoodand low lighting that bathesan abstract floral mural’sorganic tones. The aesthetic iscontemporary with a hint ofnostalgia.

Even after 9 p.m., the placewas packed, buzzing with up-beat Friday night chatter.

Several parties minglednear the bar, hoping to score atable. Fortunately, my diningcompanion and I had a reser-vation. We were seated, anda bowl of thick tortilla chipsappeared, accompanied bysmoky refried beans.

The menu features a vari-ety of items, from appetizersto full plates, all of which aremeant to be shared. We beganwith an appetizer of tostada deceviche topped with frizzledleeks. Spotlighting tilapiaand apple, it was aggressivelybright and acidic – an energiz-ing start to the meal.

Warm tacos pescado fol-lowed, the mild fish accentedwith creamy red cabbageslaw. We couldn’t limit our-selves to just one style of taco, and ordered the chilango, aswell. The quartet provided apleasing, adventurous medleyof textures, from the velvetysalsa verde cruda to the ten-der skirt steak to chicharronfor engaging crunch.

We also opted for the frijo-les borrachos – drunken beanswith pork belly, pico de galloand Mexican beer – which

proved to be a side dish withthe charisma of an entree.

With several handcraftedcocktails to choose from, mycompanion began with theburro en primavera, whichincluded lime, ginger beer, mint, mezcal and charredlime. It received high praise,as did his second drink, the

el pastor – a spicy temptationwith grilled pineapple, chipot-le adobo, chile ancho liqueur, tequila, lime and mezcalessence.

As the designated driver,I stuck with the nonalcoholiclimonada, which was sweetand refreshing.

Throughout the evening, the staff was kind, attentiveand unintrusive – but a todamadre’s service really shoneduring dessert, when the flan

we had hoped to order wassold out, and the restaurantinstead offered us a compli-mentary Carlota.

When the plate arrived, wewere glad to have taken themup on it. The blend of cookies, tequila crema and key limecurd was pure serenity, andpaired deliciously with theamericano I ordered – a strongcup of coffee with a delicatecocoa finish.

Each dish was presented

with polish and finesse, everybite also containing the reas-suring heartiness of a home-cooked meal that no amountof flash can fake. Embracingthe best of both worlds, a todamadre strikes the perfectbalance.

Team-first attitude pays off for LT girlsBy DAN SANTAROMITA

[email protected]

RIVERSIDE – Team play is the firstthing Lyons Township girls basketballcoach Paul Krick talks about this sea-son.

The Lions’ teamwork, chemistryand unselfishness has helped LT surgeahead to first place in the West Subur-ban Silver and a 15-4 overall record.

The Lions arenow 8-0 in theSilver with a two-game lead on thenearest competi-tion after toppingGlenbard West onSaturday, threedays after losing55-50 at RiversideBrookfield.

“A lot of usplayed last yearso it’s a lot of re-turning players,”senior Hope Mill-er said. “We knoweach other off thecourt, too. We’rea real ly c loseteam. We’re asmall team, whichI think helps aswell so we get toknow each otherand have a lot offun together.”

Miller is oneof three post play-ers, along withEmily Pender andErin Corrigan, sharing time for theLions. The playing time and roles ofthe three inside players is the epitomeof what has made the Lions successfulthis season.

Miller is 6-feet tall, Pender is 6-foot-2, Corrigan is 5-foot-11 and even 5-foot-11 sophomore Claire Purcell sees someregular playing time as well. Thatmuch height is hard to cope with foropposing teams and prevents foul trou-ble from ever having a big impact onthe team.

“We’re a tough team to play,” Kricksaid. “When you don’t have a super-star on the team, we play team bas-ketball. We’ve been harping on postpresence for the last two years and thegirls have been working really hardat trying to develop their confidenceand their footwork and being able tocontribute both offensively and defen-

sively without just standing out therebeing tall.”

In recent games the Lions have beendigging early holes, which is one trendthe team hopes to stop. At Montini, a62-23 loss on Jan. 17, the Lions start-ed 2-for-20 from the field and never got

back into the game. Two days later, they came back from 14 points down inthe first half to beat Fenwick 54-46.

Against RB, the Lions fell behind 12-2, but battled back to take a lead in thesecond quarter. Ultimately, the Lionslost to their neighbors despite 16 points

from senior guard Victoria Swift.“We’ve been getting off to rough

starts, but we usually bring it back inthe second half,” Miller said. “We’vebeen doing really well throughout theseason. It’s been fun with a lot of teamwins.”

Bulldogs come up short in battle against EvanstonBy DAN SANTAROMITA

[email protected]

LOMBARD – Riverside Brookfield’sboys basketball team faced one of itstoughest opponents Saturday andcame up short, but the quality compe-tition is why the Bulldogs were in thegame.

RB lost 66-63 against Evanston atGlenbard East’s When Sides Collideshootout. The Wildkits got 32 pointsfrom Nojel Eastern, one of the mostheavily recruited sophomores in thestate.

It was just the second loss of theseason for RB (17-2), but coach Tom

McCloskey was not discouraged by thedefeat.

“I thought it was a great game forus to head into February,” McCloskeysaid. “I thought Evanston was extreme-ly athletic. Like I told our guys, every-thing you do is harder against a teamwith that much athleticism. You setscreens, you got to really set screens. You go up to the basket, you got to gohard. Everything has to be at a highlevel because they are very, very ath-letic.”

The Bulldogs stayed close early on,but the Wildkits started to pull awayin the second half, leading by as manyas eight points. However, RB was

able to get back to within three on apair of occasions in the final minute.Daniko Jackson had a clear look at agame-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer, butit rimmed out.

Sam Johnson led RB with 20 pointsand nine rebounds. Jalen Clanton alsoscored 20 points.

The story of the game was Eastern, whose 32 points was a career high. The6-foot-5 sophomore was tough for RB todefend and showed elite skills. Goingup against players like that is why theBulldogs competed in the shootout.

“This is why we play these games,”McCloskey said. “Even just watching, that team was very athletic. Every-

thing is tough to do. It’s hard to run ahalf-court offense against a team likethat and I thought at times we did. Ithought we took a few bad shots, but allin all I thought we battled.”

Evanston’s length and speed on de-fense made for a lot of difficult shots forRB. Meanwhile, Evanston was able tocreate more high-percentage looks. De-spite all that, RB was still in the gamethroughout.

“The key was they shot 34 percentand we were 52 percent,” Evanstoncoach Mike Ellis said. “That paints apicture that we contested a lot of shots, didn’t give up a lot of layups insidearound the basket.”

Area teams find new stars to shine on courtBy DAN SANTAROMITA

[email protected]

New players emerge as standoutseach basketball season, from under-classmen getting their first taste ofvarsity ball to juniors and seniorsmaking the most of increased playingtime. Here is a list of some of the mostimpressive newcomers and improvedreturners on area girls basketballteams.

Maggie HarringtonSchool: NazarethClass: SeniorPosition: ForwardImpact: The 5-foot-10 senior is a first-year starter for the Roadrunners thisseason, and she has made an imme-diate positive impact. One of her sea-son accolades was getting named tothe all-tournament team at RiversideBrookfield’s holiday tournament.

Lyndsey HoydSchool: Riverside BrookfieldClass: SophomorePosition: GuardImpact: Hoyd was a productive play-er on varsity last season, but didn’talways start. Now in her second yearwith the Bulldogs, she’s become a oneof the team’s best weapons. She’s adeadly 3-point shooter who scored 23points in the final of RB’s holiday tour-nament.

Chloe MaiettaSchool: MortonClass: JuniorPosition: GuardImpact: Maietta was a starter last yearand is in her third year on varsity, butshe has taken her game to another lev-el this season. The junior point guardruns the team with more composurethis season and still brings her toughdefense, good speed and strong ball-handling to the table.

Hope MillerSchool: Lyons TownshipClass: SeniorPosition: CenterImpact: Miller has stepped up to be-come one of the team’s more reliableplayers. The 6-foot senior has been themost veteran member of the Lions’deep frontcourt, which includes threeother players at 5-foot-11 or taller, andthat strength in the post is one of thereasons LT is in the thick of the WestSuburban Silver race.

Jess MoriartySchool: Fenwick

Class: SeniorPosition: GuardImpact: Last year, Moriarty played forMount Assisi’s final team before theschool closed down. She transferred toFenwick for her senior year and has

stepped right in to give the Friars aboost. Moriarty has slid into the start-ing lineup thanks to her quality 3-pointshooting, which fits right into the sys-tem Fenwick head coach Dave Powerlikes to run.
