How to Draw Fashion Sketches

In the fashion world, new designs are presented in the form of hand-

drawn sketches before theyre actually cut and sewn. First you draw a

croquis, the model-shaped figure that serves as the base of the sketch.

The point is not to draw a realistic-looking figure, but a blank canvas of

sorts on which to display illustrations of dresses, skirts, blouses,

accessories and the rest of your creations. Adding color and details like

ruffles, seams and buttons helps to bring your ideas to life.Fashion is

the aim of my life.If you have your aim like me. First you doing part like

Starting YourSketch-

Gather materials.

Choose a hard lead pencil (H pencils are best) that makes light, sketchy

marks that are easy to erase. Marks made with these pencils also don't

indent the paper, which is helpful when you want to add color to the

image. A good quality eraser and thick paper are also important

materials to have if you want your sketch to look professional.

If you dont have the right type of pencil, you can doa sketch with a

number 2. Just remember to make very light marks, rather than

pressing hard on the page.

Drawing in pen is not advisable, since you wont be able to erase

marks you make.

You will also need colored markers, inks or paints to illustrate your

clothing designs.

Decide on a pose for your croquis.

The model for your design, called a croquis, should be drawn in a pose

that will show off the items best. You can show the model walking,

sitting, bending, or in any other position. As a beginner, you may want

to start with the most common pose, which is a runway sketch that

shows a model standing or striding on a runway. This is easiest to

draw and it will allow you to illustrate all of your designs in full view.

Since you want to illustrate your designs in a way that makes them

look professional and appealing, it's important to model them on

croquis that are well-proportioned and well-drawn.

Many fashion illustrators practice drawing hundreds of croquis to

perfect their ability to create a variety of poses.

Consider alternate methods for creating a croquis.

It's nice to be able to draw your own croquis, since it allows you to

create a model to the exact proportions you want. However, if you want

to jump straight to drawing your clothing designs, there are a few

shortcuts you can opt to take:

Download one online, where you'll find them in a range of shapes and

sizes. For instance, you can download a croquis in the shape of a child,

a man, a petite woman, and so on.

Make a croquis by tracing the outline of a model from a magazine ad

or another picture. Just place a piece of tracing paper over the model

you like and lightly created an outline.

PART -2 TO 3

Draw the balance line.

This is a the first line of your sketch, and it represents your models

center of gravity. Draw it from the top of the head to the tip of the toes,

along the backbone of your croquis. Now draw an oval to represent the

head. This is the base of your croquis, and from this, a proportional

drawing can be made. You can think of the croquis as the skeleton of the

model.

The balance line should be a straight vertical line, even if you want the

model to pose in a leaning position.For example,if you want the the

model to be posed with her hips tilted slightly to her left, draw a

straight balance line in the middle of the page. You want this line to

extend from the top of the model's head to the ground that she is

standing on.

Note that when youre designing clothes, a proportional model isn't

required, because the clothing is what is being showcased, not your

figure drawing skills. Dont worry too much about creating an accurate

looking model or adding features to the face.

Start drawing the pelvic area first.

Draw a square with equal side lengths on the balance line just below

the middle, where the pelvis is naturally positioned on the body. Size the

square according to how wide you want your model to be. A thinner

model would have a smaller square width than a plus-sized model.

Keeping your desired pose in mind, tilt this pelvic square either left or

right. For example, if you want your models hips slanted to the left,

tilt the square slightly to the left. If you want a normal standing model,

just draw the square upright without any angles left or right.

Draw the torso and shoulders.

Extend the torso lines upward from the two corners of the pelvic

square. The torso should extend upwards, bending in midway at the

waist and extending out again at the shoulder. As with a real human

body, the shoulders should be the same width as the hips, or the top of

the pelvic box. #*When youre finished, the torso should look like a

normal torso you would see on a body. Refer to pictures of models in

magazines or advertisements for reference. Notice how the waist is

smaller than the lower portion of the body and hips. The torso should

measure about two heads in length.

Its common to sketch the shoulders and hips tilted in opposite

directions, in a position called contrapposto, or counter-pose. This gives

the impression of movement. Draw the waist as a horizontal line thats

shorter than the shoulder and hips lines.

Pay attention to bend lines (the curve of the rib cage, etc.) as those

angles and lines are crucial to creating a figure that doesn't look like it

has dislocated body parts.

Sketch the neck and head.

The model's neck should be a third the width of the shoulder and half

the length of a head. After drawing this, sketch in the head, which

should be in proportion to the body. The bigger the head, the more

juvenile or younger the model looks.

You can erase the initial oval you drew to represent the head.

Draw the head so that it looks natural with the pose you have

selected. You can tilt it slightly up or down, or to the right or left.

Fill in the legs.

The legs should the longest part of the body, the length of about four

heads. The legs are also portioned into two pieces, the thighs (from the

bottom of the pelvic box to the top of knees) and calves (from the bottom

of knees to beginning of ankles). Keep in mind that fashion illustrators

usually exaggerate the model's height by making her legs longer than

her torso

The top of each thigh should be approximately the same width as the

head. Taper the width of each leg from the thigh to the knee. By the

time you reach the knee, the leg should be one third the width of the

bigger portion of the thigh.

To draw the calves, taper down to the ankles. Each ankle should be

about one fourth the width of the head.

Finish with the feet and arms.

The feet are relatively narrow. Draw them like elongated triangles that

are about the same length as the head. Construct the arms like the legs,

tapered toward the wrists. Make them longer in proportion to the torso

than a real persons arms would be, since this gives a more stylized

impression. Add the hands and fingers last.

PART 3 TO 3

Drawing Clothes and Accessories

Illustrate your original design.

Think about what look youre trying to create, and represent it down to

the last detail. If youre designing a dress, for example, add patterns,

ruffles, text, bows, and so on to create a beautiful piece. Focus on the

elements of your design that are unique, and include appropriate

accessories so that the style youre going for is clear. If you need some

fresh ideas or don't know where to start, look up fashion trends on the

internet or in magazines for inspiration.

Sketch the clothes boldly.

Since the purpose of a fashion drawing is to showcase your design

ideas, use a bolder hand when youre drawing the clothing. Sketch the

clothes so that they appear to hang on the croquis in a realistic way.

There should be creases around the elbows and at the waste, as well as

near the shoulders, ankles and wrists. Think about how clothing hangs

on a person and replicate that on your model.

Remember that different fabrics and structures lie on the body in

different ways. If the fabric is thin and silky, it will rest on the body and

drift away, almost billowing. If the fabric is thick like denim or wool, it

will be boxier and will show less shape of the body (think denim

jackets).

Try to illustrate the texture of the fabric youre drawing, whether its

smooth, coarse, stiff or soft. Add details like sequins and buttons to

make the drawing look more realistic.

Learn how to draw folds, wrinkles and pleats.

Use different types of lines to create different creases in the fabric

you're drawing. Knowing how to draw folds, wrinkles and pleats will

help you illustrate the structure of the garment.

Folds can be drawn using loose, wavy lines.

Use circular patterns to show wrinkles.

Take out a straight edge to draw exact pleats.

Illustrate patterns and prints.

If your design includes a patterned or printed fabric, it's important to

accurately illustrate how it will look on a model. Start by drawing the

outline of the patterned garment, such as a skirt or blouse. Divide it into

a grid with different sections. Fill in the sections one at a time with the

pattern on the fabric.

Pay attention to how folds, pleats and wrinkles change the

appearance of a pattern. It may need to bend or be cut off at certain

points to look accurate.

Take the time to draw the pattern in detail and make sure it looks the

same across the entire grid.

Finalize the drawing with shading, ink and color.

Use thick black ink or paint on the lines that you want to keep. You can

erase the body shaping lines and any stray pencil marks at this point.

Finally, carefully color in the clothing using hues you want your

designs to have.

You can color in the clothing with markers, ink or paint. Mix colors

and use a variety of shades to illustrate your designs.

Really imagine the design moving towards you under spotlights on a

runway when youre working on shading and texture. Deeper folds in

fabric will result in darker shades of the color you're using. Where

fabric is hit by the light, the colors should appear lighter.

Adding features like hair, sunglasses and makeup is a nice final touch

that will make your fashion sketch come to life.

Consider making flats.

In addition to making a fashion illustration, you may want to create a

flat schematic. This is an illustration of your clothing design that shows

the flat outline of the garment, as though it were laid out on a flat

surface. It's helpful for people viewing the design to see the flat version

as well as the way it would look modeled on a body.

Flats should be drawn to scale. Make an effort to create illustrations

that look as exact as possible.

You should include a back view of your flats as well, especially of the

back of the design includes unique details.

Knowing how to read, use and design patterns is an essential part of

being a good fashion designer. Start with reading and using, then move

to making your own. The more comfortable you are with pattern-

making, the less tempted you'll feel to reuse stale ideas.

Learn all that you can about fabrics.

Fabrics are diverse and include both natural and manmade, and

mixtures of the two. There are modern and vintage fabrics to learn

about too, and you should make a decision as to which you prefer.

Knowing how fabric handles is essential for a good designer, and the

earlier you learn this, the better. There are good reference books in

libraries about fabrics you can borrow from the library; these will

teach you about the weft and weave, about textures, strength,

behavioral qualities of the fabrics, etc.

Designing

Be inspired without being a copycat.

All artists are inspired by prior artists; it is how art grows and

changes over time. However, it is also important to find your own

expression and not fall slave to certain styles or fads that won't stand

emerge overnight; it will take time and it will also require constant

noting of the things you like and how you'd use them within your own

Keep secret Pinterest boards. Add the fashion inspirations to it as you

would be good to evolve or merge into your own designs.

Improvise.

Use the cloth, the colors and the patterns to inspire you and bring forth

creative and unique ideas.

Give yourself room to change.

You will find that your ideas change over time; that's good, it keeps

your designing fresh. However, you might like to come up with a

"signature" element to your designs that can be carried through your

works over the years. Think about what element that might be nowit

might be a particular cut, a color or pattern, an addition to one part of

something to offer that no one else can offer. The best way to do that is

to take smart risks. Do something big but do it right. Weigh the risk vs

the gain and only take the leap if it's worth it to you. Generally it's scary

to take risks, and you might be reluctant, but you'll never get anywhere

exciting in life by staying safe and in the same place your whole life.

Roll with the punches.

Be flexible. Don't panic when things don't go according to plan. When

something negative happens, turn it into a positive. When something

positive happens, find a way to help carry that over for a rainy day.

fresh and ever changing. Stagnant work or personality gets boring and

people will get tired of you. Keep them interested and keep yourself

happy by keeping your life and work exciting and new. This also means

getting really good at what you do, and this is another great way to get

Be really good at what you do.

When someone is clearly very dedicated and good at what they do, that

catches people's attention. You become known as That Woman or That

Guy. You're the one. The one they remember because they know if they

How to Run a Fashion Show

Whether you are planning a professional fashion show, a student show,

or just want to have fun, there are several steps to take into account

before the big day. Follow these simple steps and you'll have a show in

no time!

step-1 Design a collection or seek local designers to make garments for

the show.

step-2 Select a venue.

This is important to do before anything as you need enough time to

reserve the location. Without a venue there is no show. You can have a

fashion show anywhere! Just make sure the venue is large enough to

hold guests, workers and the equipment needed for the night. Also

ensure there are rest rooms available and visible fire exits in cases of

emergencies.

Make a floor plan of how you want your runway, where the

guests will be seated, where the bar (if any) will be located,

will you have a buffet of food or will there be people serving

canapes.

Having this mapped out will organize and maximize your

space. Also consider if you'll have a runway at all. Some designers have

held exhibitions like art galleries where models stood in statue-like

poses. Rick Owen's took fashion show to new heights in Paris 2013 for

his s/s 2014. You can watch his show on YouTube.

Consider decor.

Attention to detail is imperative. Will you have flowers? If so, what

kind of flowers? Will there be fabric hung from the walls? What is the

color scheme? What mood are you trying to invoke on your guests

when they enter? These are questions that will determine how much

detail you've placed into the show. Make sure not to over do it either-

sometimes less is more. To make it easier on yourself, you should make

a mood board- this should contain colors to consider, fabrics or

materials, lighting, food that will be served, etc. Consider everything.

Design the invitation and market.

Decide on a date (make sure to give yourself enough time, especially if

you're doing the show on your own). Make an invite on photo shop or

illustrator- or have a friend do it! Once that has been finalized, make a

list of people who you would like to attend your show. Are you doing it

for publicity? If so, you need press and lots of it if you're a new

designer. You should send them to magazines that feature new talent,

bloggers, photographers, models, etc.

If you are running low on funds try sponsor ships.

Many companies will give you samples, bags or raffle gifts if you ask.

You can search for PR companies online. Send emails and ask if they

are willing to offer anything. Another good way of this is by going to

the store yourself and asking a manager if this is possible. If the

manager is not available ask when he/she is next in. Do not believe an

associate will pass on the message. Be professional and per

This is great fun and can be done in several ways. You can place an ad

anywhere with time and location for an open casting. Make sure that if

you decide on this route that you have a time slot and are available for

that time. Nothing is worse than going to an open casting and no one is

day. If you are seeking new models- fresh faces- you can place a free ad

actors, singers, photographers, etc. ModelMayhem is also a good site to

check out. You should a sheet for them to fill out with contact

information, measurements, a photo (you will take on the day of) and

shoe size. You can find a pre- made sheet on Google by typing in model

sheet or Model Casting.

Book hair stylists, make up artist and photographers for the

day of the show.

You can see if a near by salon will be willing to do it free of charge in

exchange for their logo to be printed on the tickets. If you can get stylist

and make up artist from a school, that would be better as they are

always willing to do it for the experience. You can also find many on

Starnow. Make sure to ask for their portfolio. Show them the ideas or

styles you have in mind, they can give you expert advice in what would

work best. ** Make sure not to allow them to alter your designs or

ideas. Take their advice but at the end of the day it is YOUR show**

Please also be aware of the type of hair style or make up you are after.

If your garments are extravagant, then keep everything else to a

minimum. Consider closings and if it is pulled over the head how it

would affect the hair. You should have at least 2 photographers for the

day of the event. Take back stage images and images during the event.

If you want to record it you need to consider 2 cameramen, lighting and

an editor.

Education

Earn a high school diploma.

There are no official educational requirements for becoming a tailor.

As a general rule, though, you should at least have a high school

diploma or GED, especially if you intend to work as a tailor for a larger

fashion company.

Check with your high school to see if there are any classes that might

prove relevant to the field. At the very least, you should try to take a

home economics course. Some high schools may even have more in-

depth sewing courses that can teach you about fashion design, hand

sewing, and industrial power sewing.

Take art electives to help you develop a better aesthetic taste so that

you will be more prepared to work with color and style. Make sure

that your classes also help you maintain basic math skills so that you

will have no problem working with measurements.

A business class or two can also help if you plan on becoming a self-

employed tailor.

Work-study courses can be beneficial, too, since the instructor might

be able to help you land work with someone in the fashion industry.

Take college level courses.

Even though you do not need to have a college degree, you can benefit

from taking college classes about fashion and design.

In addition to being beneficial for your own improvement, having

college coursework or a college degree might make your employer

more likely to consider you for higher level jobs. You may even work

your way up the chain and be placed in charge of other tailors as a

supervisor.

Check with local community colleges and technical schools since they

are more likely to have sewing, design, and fashion courses than four-

year liberal arts colleges. The classes at a community college or

technical school will also be cheaper.

Look for schools that offer a variety of courses at the beginner,

intermediate, and advanced levels.

Study matters related to clothing construction, patterns, textiles or

fabrics, finishes, detailing, and fit

Ideally, your classes should provide you with textbook information

and plenty of practice sewing exercises

Many tailors end up being self-employed. While it is not strictly

necessary, you might find it beneficial to take a few business and

business finance courses at the college level to prepare you for the

responsibilities and duties involved in running your own business.

Look for business classes at community colleges in your area. Pay

close attention to general business classes, business finance classes,

entrepreneurship classes, marketing classes, and any other class

dealing with small business topics.

TIPS

Remember to not overdo it. You know when you look attractive; stick

to it!

Always remember to smile. Smiling will let everyone know that you

are a fun person to be around!

Don't be afraid to try newthings. If your style is different, i.e. goth,

emo, etc. don't change yourself just for the sake of getting notice

Just be yourself. They don't really like you if you are not yourself. Be

happy, and have a cheerful attitude!
