Issue Statement

• SDI as a concept now known and accepted internationally

• Convergence of technologies and perspectives providing significant new opportunities

• Libya has the opportunity to leverage SDI as an important cornerstone of eLibya

• Can provide an important common infrastructure in support of the Country’s development moving forward

What is Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI)?

Spatial Data Infrastructure

(SDI)

SDI as a concept recognizes GIS data as a fundamental infrastructure that supports national physical, cultural and economic

development and environmental protection, akin to highways, telecommunications networks, health and educational facilities.

At present, information is scattered in many agencies, in many different forms. Many agencies are collecting the same information, and there is little or no information sharing. An

“Information Infrastructure” is needed to provide the technical and institutional framework for developing and sharing the most important information among all the sectors

SDI Can Be Integrated with Government Transformation Planning

Page 23: LSDI - Contributing to Libya's Future_summary

Community Information Infrastructure

• Manage ongoing investment and sustainable development initiatives

• Provides a foundation of information for better informed planning and decision making

• Based on ICT and Geospatial technology (GIS)

• Developed according to the needs of the community – provides channel for two-way engagement with local communities

• Provide project management and monitoring capabilities

• Supports the economic development activities of each community

Page 24: LSDI - Contributing to Libya's Future_summary

Benefits of SDI• Modernize and streamline government agencies• Reduce redundancy in data development and maintenance• Increase efficiency of operations• Share information across administrative boundaries• Increase coordination across agencies• Support better decision making with better information at all

levels• Improve communications and transparency• Promote and support more effective physical, economic and

social development
