Summer reading list for grades 2-5TRANSCRIPT
Summmer Reading 2014 The Independent Day School Lower School (Grades 2 – 5)
Summer, 2014 Dear 2014/2015 Second – Fifth Grade Parents and Students, Enclosed is a list of suggested summer reading selections for students who will be entering grades two through five in September at IDS. This list includes a small percentage of the titles that might meet the interest and ability level of each student. One of the best ways to select independent reading is to spend time in your local library and browse through the shelves. If there is a book that interests you, try the Rule of Thumb (see below) to see if it is at the appropriate reading level. Another way to find a good book is to look for one written by one of your favorite authors. There are also great on-‐line sites that can provide you with lists of summer reading in many categories. A list of these websites is included at the end of each grade level list of suggested books. Lastly, at the end of this guide you will find a list of Newbery Medal Winners. These books are listed by the year they received the award, not by grade level. You will need to make sure that if you select a book from this list, the content and reading level are age-‐appropriate. If you are entering third, fourth or fifth grade there is required summer reading. The required books are listed under the appropriate grade level section in this guide. I recommend that you save the required reading for August so that you will be ready to contribute to class discussions in September. The important thing is to visit your library regularly and read, read, READ! Best wishes for a fun and relaxing summer! Happy reading, Frann Frann Ravid Head of Lower School P.S. Please remember to record the titles of books read to and by your child in the IDS Summer Reading Challenge booklet. RULE OF THUMB Begin by selecting a book that looks interesting. The title, cover, or illustrations often give you enough information to determine if you might enjoy a particular book. You need to read about two pages (three or four if they are not full pages). Make a fist with one hand. Begin to read. Start with your pinky, and extend a finger for each time there is a word that you cannot pronounce or that you do not understand. If you reach your thumb before you finish reading the pages, it means that there were at least five words that slowed you down. You need to look for another interesting book. Independent reading should be fun and easy.
Second Graders may be moving between beginning readers and short chapter books. Ask your local librarian to show you the special section of beginning readers in the library. Below is a list of short chapter books appropriate for readers who are ready. Students may read alone or with a parent. In addition we hope that parents will continue to read out loud to their children. Please remember to record the titles of books read by and to your second grader in the booklet for the IDS Summer Reading Challenge. ____________________________ Abbott, Tony
