Among its predictions for the year 1379, theNew York Graphic gives the following : " Col-onel Bob Ini;rsU will b converted by Air.Moody, and will conduct a scries of revival meet-ings at Ocean Grove." A religious contempo-rary adds : We predict that at the same timeRib is revivaling at Ocean Grove Moody's part-ner, Sankcy, will be engaged as an Ethiopianminstrel in a Chicago dive."

John B. Gough, in a lecture in England, refer-ring to the question whether alcohol was a foodor a medicine, remarked that in his opinion it was
very much like sitting down on a hornet's neststimulating but not nourishing. "It is said that in London it is not a very un-
common thing to find yourself riding in a handsomecab driven by a broken-dow- n lawyer, a retireddoctor, or even a played-ou- t lord. A part ofthis story will do for the marines only. Nobodyelse couid be maJj to believe that an Englishlord or any other eort of lord, no matter howthoroughly plajed-ou- t be might be, would ratherdrive a cab for a living than marry an Americanheiress with an annual income of half a million, knowing how marvelonnly easy it is for him to doto. lis Qualified. In Augusta, Me., no provision 0
has been made the present winter for feeding andlodging tramps. A vagabond went into a policestation and wanted to sleep there.
We only lodge prisoners," said the sergeantbehind the desk.
"You only lodge prisoners?" repeated thevagabond meditatively.
That's all," was the reply ; "you lave gotto steal something, or assault somebody, or some-
thing of that kind."I've got to assault somebody, or something
of that kind," again repeated" the vagabond, thoughtfully. Then he reached across the deskwith his right arm, and knocked the sergeant offhis stool, saying, as the officer got up with hishan-- to his eye : "Give me as good a bed as youkin, sergeant, 'cause I dm't tcel very well to-

tays be values me at three million dollars, you attwo millions, and the baby at one."
That closed the conversation on that subject, but next morning as Harry was getting on hisovercoat, he examined the new patch which hadbeen added, and coolly observed :

The passion for tidies is a mania which over-balanch- ca
the best regulated female mind. When yonr wife brings jou up "all standing" inthe street, with a tug at your arm like a vacuumbrake, ejaculates wait a minute," and thenrushes wildly at a shop window, you may knowthat a bithertj unknown species of tidy has beendiscovered. When Mrs. lounlove calls on herdear friend. Mm. Coscy, after the insincere kisshas been interchanged, her eye roams fiercelyabout the apartment in search of tidies, and ifher eager optic detects some new combination ofstlk, cotton, linen or embroidery, she immedi-ately exclaims, "How awfully nice; isn't itpufleckly lovely; where did you get it ?" andon being informed nonchalantly by her friendthat she "picked it up" in Dublin or SouthKensington, as if she occasionally visited thoseplaces of an afternoon for shopping purpose?, isimmediately ?rm?ateil with deadly envy, andrevolves in her mind the possibility ofatriptothe North Pole of Central Africa to secure someunapprochable hideous article of the samenature.

Mr. Edward lleeve, of Mviia Vale, Jos ford, by His ;
Majesty the Sovereign tf the Hawaiian Islands lor j
his zeal, ability, and fidelity in the Lhplomatio and j
Consular Service cf that little isl-iu- State, during a '
period extending over more than twenty years fromthe reign of lvaiuehainehi III , to the rei gn of Ka!a- -kaua the First, the present King. Singularly i
enough, Mr. lleeve (who is now lVIice Magistrate cfGosiord and Krisbane Water) ha 1, very properly, i
just sent in his resignation of his Consular Uiliee asHawaiian Consul-Gener- al fur Australia in obedience j
to a l ite general t r ier from the Imperial Govern- -merit piciuu'giteJ here, in the .M ir Soulh M'ala j
Oazttle, on the 3rd ultimo. This resignation of hisConsular Office for a Foreign Powsr (lie! J by virtueof an exequatur fmni the Court cf St. James, givenby Her Most Gracious Majesty tauten ictcriu, un-der Her Sign Manual and Privy Sen!, on the 12thday of June, 1871) had Dot beeo posted for Honolulumore than ten days before the Cross of a KnightCommander of " the Royal and National Order ofKalakaua the First," arrived at Gosford, with ahighly complimentary despatch, date I the 28th De-
cember, 187S, from the Minister of Foreign Relationsnt Honolulu, His Excellency John M. Kapena, witha Dock of the Statutes of the Order, and the Insigniaic, to accompany the necesaiity Letters Patent fromthe Hawaiian King. The reception of this unexpect-ed compliment has greatly pleased the numerousfriends of Mr. E Reeve, and it is intended, we be-
lieve, to exhibit the Cress and Cordon (with the 1 loy-al Letters Patent) in the Hawaiian Compartment atthe Sydney International Exhibition, iu Septembernext. The decoration is an tight pointed cress ofgold, with white and light blue euaniel ; somethingresembling the well-know- n cross of the ancient andworld-renowne- d Order of St. John. The ribbon is otlight blue and white, the cross being appointed to beworn pendant Ihere-fro- m round the neck. Theworkmanship of the decoration (which is surmountedby the Hawaiian crown in gold) is extremely chasteand good, hiving an appropriate inscription midother devices, amongst which may be noticed a nar-row gold wreath, the symbolical jmloiilou, and theRoyal Feather Staff or Kahili iu gold and redenamel. This medal is, in itself, extremely curiousand interesting, and must be invaluable to the recip-ient, Mr. Reeve ; but, it being a foreign decoration,it, of course, confers neither rank nor title on thatgentleman, who is, and always has been, a Ibitishsubject.
