. . .began officially with Ash Wednesday. For many of us it began a

week earlier with the "All Church" Book Study. The book titled

"CHANGE the WORLD, Recovering the MESSAGE and MISSION of JE-

SUS", is written by Mike Slaughter, the Methodist Pastor of Ginghamsburg

UMC in Tipp City, Ohio. The book studies are being held at various times

and places thoughout the week. The seven week process will conclude

with the eighth meeting being held for all participants to share together

their experiences. Past study groups have been rich growth experiences formany, developing a stronger sense of community in the process. It's not

too late to join a study group, just call the office to obtain a book and for

    available times and locations. 314/771-9214.

    Hi Everyone.

After the May edition of the News & Views newsletter I will no

longer be able to serve as editor. This summer is

a very busy and exciting time for me because I

will be going to Switzerland in June with the Girl

scouts and then teaching some circus classes at

City Museum. When summer ends I will begin

an upper level high school course load.

I want to thank Pastor Kathleen for giving me the

opportunity to serve as editor for the news letter. Id also like to

thank all those who helped me in so many ways, provided articles,

proof reading and production.. It has been a great experience for

    me.

If there is someone who would like to serve as editor please let me

and Pastor Kathleen know as soon as possible.

    Thank you,

    Elena Greene

From The Wilder View . . .Often I hear people saying, I hate change, why cant people just leave things as they are? Or theold classic, If it aint broke, dont fix it. It just seems as though just when things are getting rollingalong, something comes along to make it change.

However, the interesting thing about change is that many times we (with great joy) make choices thatmake changes. For instance, when you make a commitment to love another person and share a life andhome with themOr when you decide to conceive, or adopt, or even mentor a child. When you accepta promotion or take on another job. All of these are major changes and in most cases, we greet thesechanges with excitement, joy, and hope. Dan and Chip Heath point out in their bookSwitch, that whilewe have generally negative feelings towards changes, if we understand the reason and the purpose be-hind a change we can embrace the change and change can become a very positive experience.

During Lent, many of us are reading (in small groups) a book called, Changing the World, Recover-ing the Message and Mission of Jesus. This book invites us to look at the ways we are currently beingchurch in our community, and to consider changes. Changes in the ways we are church; changes thatmight make our church more relevant to both our personal spiritual needs and the needs of our commu-nity. Some of the first groups have already met as I am writing this article and I am excited to hearabout the energy that is coming from the discussions. If you are not already reading the book or are notsigned up for a group, there is still time to participate. I invite you to take a journey with us this Lent tosee how we can change our world for Gods glory. I invite you to read the book or the study guides, andto talk with those around you, or give me a call and share your ideas. Books are available at the com-munion rail. Please consider joining us.

I am hopeful that this Lenten season will be a time in which we can reflect and dream about what

God would have us do to make St. Louis a city that is known for the mighty works that God is doing inour midst. I am hopeful that we will find ways that we can make subtle changes that will enhance ourpersonal relationship with God and each other. God truly is doing great and amazing things in ourmidst.Blessings on the journey.~Pastor Kathleen

Hammers, drills, glass points, ladders, screws and screw drivers wereonly just a few of the tools used on Saturday, Feb. 19th at the church.Several of our church family met at 8:30am and worked until afterNoon to complete various projects.

Organized by the Trustee Committee, the projects might seemdiverse, but they all result in one thing making our space more en-

joyable and meeting the needs of current and future members. Three smaller pro-jects took much of the time of several volunteers;. repairing a half dozen pews, replacing the glass in the doors to the Family Welcome Center and replacing as many light bulbsinside and out as possible. Take a drive down Lafayette any evening and see that all ofthe portico lighting is now operational again; bulbs replaced and lens were cleaned.

One thing that has been happening with the lighting over the past few months is that

all of the florescent lighting in the coves have been replaced with CFL bulbs. This al-lows us to have different lighting options using single bulbs. A great thing that was

found were mirrors in the cove lighting, which originally reflected the light. This work-day included the start of cleaning many of these mirrors. Look around each Sunday tovisually see the progress. Youll notice the cove lighting will be getting brighter andbrighter.

The sound project is being completed in phases. Weve completed phase one andmoving into phase two. Phase one included the installation of a speaker in the Family

Welcome Center. Just ask any of the mothers of young children about the speaker. The largest project for this workday was the rebuild of the sound booth; this is one of

the major parts of phase two. Thanks to most who were there, the sound booth now hasnew framework and counter, making the use of the sound booth easier and more effi-cient. With a taller/longer counter the space can be better organized for use by more than

just one person. While there are still a few things to complete on the sound booth, thelargest part of the work has been completed. Give us another month or so once we arecomplete and an announcement will be made to have an open house for the sound booth.

Good Sense Financial CornerBy Bethany Spaulding, C.P.A., C.M.A., C.C.S.A., C.R.P.

and the person who asks for something and doubts will not receive that which was requested.Proverbs 18:21 (Message and NKJ versions)Words kill, words give life; they're either poison or fruityou choose.Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

James 1:5-8 (The Message)If you don't know what you're doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You'll get his help, and won't be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believingly, without a sec-ond thought. People who "worry their prayers" are like wind-whipped waves. Don'tthink you're going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping allyour options open.

Let's say that I prayed and thanked God for providing the money to make a mortgage payment onMonday. If on Wednesday I say to a friend, I just don't know how I'm going to pay the mortgage, Iam acting out doubt - worrying my prayer. I would act out faith and boldness by instead saying,God supplies all my needs and I am so grateful that God is going to provide the money for mymortgage payment! That statement is based on a scripture (Phil. 4:19) and is consistent with what Ijust prayed and believed God for in faith.

How do you speak what God says about your finances? It naturally comes from the overflow ofyour heart.Matthew 12:34 (Amplified Bible) ...for out of the fullness (the overflow, the superabun-dance) of the heart the mouth speaks.

How do you get what God says in your heart? You read, think about and talk about what God saysto you in the Bible.

Romans 10:17 (Todays NIV) Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, andthe message is heard through the word about Christ.

Deuteronomy 30:14-15 (Todays NIV) No, the word is very near you; it is in yourmouthand in your heart so you may obey it. I set before you today life and prosperity, death anddestruction.

You can hear the Word of God in many ways a sermon, reading our Bibles, studying the Bible withothers, listening to the Bible on tape, listening to praise music based on scripture, etc. It's up to eachof us to ensure that our hearts overflow with God's Word about our finances and our lives, so muchso that we carry it into our conversations.

Does it Matter What You Say?Why would you want to say what God says about your finances instead of talkingabout the problems you face? Because death and life are in the power of the tongue,

1, 2, 3 Countdown to the Last One!

We are down to number three of the BIG stained glass windows in our Sanctuary. Over one hundredyears ago the purchase and installation of our big windows might seem a small amount by todays dol-

lars. However, if those who were doing the fundrais-ing and making decisions on what went into the newbuilding knew the cost of restoring the windows, theywould probably not be happy.

Historic restoration is not cheap, however, restoringarchitecture has great value. Our windows bring a lotof fame to our church. Additionally, many guest wed-dings specifically mention the windows as one of the

factors in their choice to be married in our sanctuary. The first two windows (North and West) have beenrestored over the past 10 years, with a cost of each be-ing $ 30-50K.

We are at the turning point for the window on the east. Take a close look at the window the next timeyou are in the sanctuary. The wood (as shown in the picture) is rotting and no longer stable. The esti-mated cost for the window restoration is $ 40-60K. While this soundslike a lot of money, our church family has come to the financial aid ofthe church. There will be various fundraisers to support the work onthe window, but we need each of you! Whether you feel led to make adirect donation to the window (please mark the memo line of your

check as such), participate in fundraisers, or organize and run a fund-raiser it will take everyone of us to make this dream happen.

The first fundraiser is through Flower Power We receive 50% of anysales. This can be a small amount or large amount. Buy your springblubs now, or be a salesman. Email the link to everyone you know.Flower bulbs isnt just a local fundraiser. This is a national fundraiser.People can buy on the LPUMC link from FL to Maine, Minnesota toTexas, Washington state to the southern tip of California and anywherebetween. Know someone in Hawaii or Alaska? Have them checktheir zone, they might be able to plant and have beautiful flowers.

Put your thinking caps on! Its up to us to make sure our historic building remains in good repair. Imsure each of you are proud of our building, just as you are proud of your own home. This is Godshouse, lets treat it as our own! Article submitted by Bill Byrd

    Reconciling Ministries Workshop

Participating were member of five area Methodist Church

    families.

    Laura Rossbert iinspires our group.

On Sunday March 6, members of fivearea Methodist church families gatheredhere in Fellowship Hall for RMSs in-structional workshop titled, Called toWitness Campaign; Believe Out Loud

Together. There was a good mix ofLBGT and straight participants

Laura Rossbert, a Called to Witness Con-sultant, did an incredible job of condens-ing a much longer seminar into just threehours. She presented a brief history ofThe Campaigns history, methods andgoals, and spoke to the state of the An-nual Conference. In addition, a number of informationalhandouts were made available.

RMN MISSION STATEMENT: Reconciling MinistriesNetwork is a national grassroots organizationthat exists to enable full participation of people ofall sexual orientations and gender identities in the life of theUnited Methodist Church, both in policy and practice.

In small group settings we were asked toshare, critique and refine our own stories. Itwas pointed out that sharing our own stories

is crucial to promoting understanding withinthe larger church. It puts a face on who we areand expresses our right and longing to be in-cluded in Jesus family of fellow believers.

The work of this group should be a priorityof all believers. It is, after all, a matter of So-cial Justice. The witness of a non-LGBTcan be very important for church family tohear.

The group was challenged to be as activeas possible in advancing the cause of inclusiv-ity within the Methodist Church, to do what

we could to influence Conference representatives and in general Believe Out Loud Together. For more information on the workshop contact one of the participants pictured above OR

The Bush-era law, called the En-

    ergy Independence and Security

    Act, set energy-efficiency stan-

dards for light bulbs that willcome fully into effect in 2012. The

law will require light bulbs to use

25-30 percent less power than in-

    candescents use today.

Its a mandate that will quickly

    slash residential and commercial

    energy use, lowering the nations

carbon footprint and utility bills at

    the same time.

    For consumers, the biggest deter-

rent to choosing CFLs and LEDs is

the initial cost. Yet although CFLs

and LEDs cost more initially, over

time they can save you hundreds of

dollars in reduced energy costs. This is one case where being good

    stewards of the environment also

makes you a good financial steward.

    The incandescent bulb hasnt

    changed much since Thomas Edi-

son patented it in 1879. More

than one hundred years later, the

    familiar bulbs still push electric-

ity through a wire filament and

still waste a whole lot of energy.

    Ninety percent of the energy

    pumped through an incandescent

light bulb is wasted as heat; thats

why traditional bulbs are so hotto the touch. However, thanks to

a piece of 2007 legislation, tradi-

    tional incandescent bulbs will

soon become a thing of the past.
