The Hawk LP10 ´SMART` is an ultrasonic level transmitter that ispowered by a 2-wire, 4-20mA DC loop. The 4-20mA loop is an industrystandard control line for most PLC's and Distributive Control Systems.The LP10 ´SMART` is available in an integral configuration (transducerand electronics in an integrated housing) and a remote configuration(bracket mountable electronics separate from flange mountabletransducers).The transmitter draws less than 4mA of current from the supply andemits a sound pulse from the transducer toward the measured product.This sound pulse is reflected from the surface to be measured backto the transducer where the signal, or ECHO, is processed by thetransmitter. This pulse is generated every second, regardless of currentoutput by the transmitter. The time between pulse and echo receptionis processed using the speed of sound (corrected for the ambienttemperature of the application) to calculate the distance measured.Temperature compensation is critical to maintain accuracy since thevariation is usually 0.10% of distance per degree Fahrenheit change0.17% per degree C—seasonal changes can produce wide temperaturevariations.The high sampling rates of the LP10 ´SMART` transmitter producesgreater resolution on rapidly changing process measurementapplications. After every echo is processed, the display is updatedto read feet or meters of space or material and the correspondingoutput is proportionally updated.Upon initial application the transmitter will open a 'window' over theentire span and gradually increase the gain of the amplifier until anecho is received. It will then perform a validation sequence and closethe window around the level. The transmitter will maintain the windowover the echo and ignore signals in front of and behind the valid level.This reduces the chance of false level readings. Periodic interruptions,such as agitators, can be ignored in the validation sequence.The transmitter also employs dynamic gain control. The transmitterwill automatically adjust its gain level to maintain the echo at apredetermined strength. This will allow the amplifier to track the levelwhen intermittent disturbances such as steam, dust, froth or foamoccur in the application.
