Easter Sunday FIRST READING: Acts 10: 34, 37- 43 “To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who be- lieves in him will receive forgive- ness of sins through his name.” RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 118 “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad.” SECOND READING: Col. 3: 1-4 “Look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is.” Or SECOND READING: 1 Cor. 5: 6-8 “Throw away the old yeast, that you may be new dough.” SEQUENCE: “Grave-clothes I saw where none lay dead, the cloth that once had veiled his head!” GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: 1 Cor. 5: 7-8 “Christ. our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed; let us then feast with joy in the Lord .” GOSPEL: Jn. 20: 1-9 or Mk. 16: 1-7 “When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.” The gospel from the Easter Vigil may be read in place of this. At an afternoon Mass, another gospel may be read: Lk. 24: 13-35 SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: forgive- ness of sins; new life; resurrection. FOCUS: “Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified, has risen.” REFLECTION: We are Easter people and alleluia is our song. “A Christian is an alleluia from head to foot.” St. Augustine of Hippo God wants us to sing alleluia and to sing it truthfully from our hearts... Let us sing alleluia with our voice and our heart, with our mouth and with our life.” St. Augustine “You are a fire that takes away the coldness, illuminates the mind with its light, and causes me to know your truth. And I know that you are beauty and wisdom itself. The food of angels, you gave yourself to man in the fire of your love.” St. Catherine of Siena “Strive to keep in order your thoughts about worldly concerns. Try to arrive at a state in which your body can carry out its usual work, while leaving you free to be always with the Lord in spirit. The merciful Lord will give you freedom from cares, and where this freedom pre- vails everything is done in its own time, and nothing is a worry or a burden. See, ask—and it will be given.” Theophane the Recluse APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: The images of light and rebirth prevail. The first reading summarizes the basis of our Chris- tian faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. The second reading involves getting rid of the old life and replacing it with a new source, that which is initiated in Christian baptism. The profession of faith is replaced by the rite of renewal, of baptismal vows, thus reinforcing the premise that we must be reborn as followers of Christ. Make full use of incense, the presence of the paschal candle, and the use of the rite of blessing and sprinkling with Holy Water to reaf- firm with our senses that which we feel in our hearts. The gospel accla- mation: “Christ has become our paschal sacrifice; let us feast with joy in the Lord,” should be given heightened attention as this acclamation sums up the Easter message. Sample General Intercessions: Introduction—My dear brothers and sisters, with joy at Christ’s rising from the dead, let us turn to God our Father in prayer: • For religious and secular leaders throughout the world, that they may lead and serve with the love of the risen Christ; • For true and lasting world peace, that the peace of Christ will permeate all the ends of the earth; • For our suffering sisters and broth- ers, that their sorrow will be turned into lasting joy; • For our community and families, that we may have the faith and strength to bear witness to Christ’s resurrection. _______________________________________ YOUTH GROUPS He is Risen VAO In Praise of His Name (O'Connor) BB, MI, GP, GTR, GC, G2, JS, RS Our God Reigns VAO, W&S, WCH Rejoice, Chosen People (Haas) G-4869 Sweet Redeemer (Angrisano) S&S Testify to Love S&S, VAO Waters of Life SM, WCH, W&S, VAO _______________________________________ HISPANIC HYMNS Alaban Todos CEL, CPD, FYC, UV Aleluya: el Senor Resucito CEL, CPD FYC Cristo Jesus Resucito CEL, CPD, FYC No es El Muerte el Final 12578 WLP Nuestra Pascua CEL, CPD, FYC Rescucito! FIRST READING: Acts 5: 12-16“The numbers of men and womenwho came to believe in the Lordincreased steadily.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps.118 “Give thanks to the Lord for heis good, his love is everlasting .”SECOND READING: Rev. 1: 9-11, 12-13, 17-19 “I was dead butnow I am to live forever and ever.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Jn.20: 29 “You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me; says theLord; blessed are those who havenot seen me, but still believe!”GOSPEL: Jn. 20: 19-31 “After eightdays Jesus came in and stoodamong them.”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: baptism, faith, community, praise, rejoicing

FOCUS: “Doubt no longer, but be-lieve.” The resurrected Christ ap-pears, strengthening the faith ofthe apostles.

REFLECTION: “I long to under-stand in some degree thy truth, which my heart believes and loves. For I do not seek to understand thatI may believe, but I believe in orderto understand. For this also I be-lieve, that unless I believed, Ishould not understand.”

St. Anselm of Canterbury

“A shadow’s shadow, a world ofshadow (Eccles. 1; 2)—nothing mat-ters except loving God.”

Thomas à Kempis

“So long as the ascetic prays withthe mind in the head, he will still beworking solely with the resourcesof the human intellect, and on thislevel he will never attain to an im-mediate and personal encounterwith God. By the use of his brain, hewill at best know about God, but hewill not know God. For there can beno direct knowledge of God with-out an exceedingly great love, andsuch love must come, not from thethe brain alone, but from the wholeman—that is, from the heart. It isnecessary, then, for the ascetic to

Second Sunday of Easter: Cycle C

descend from the head into theheart. He is not required to abandonhis intellectual powers—the reason, too, is a gift of God—but he is calledto descend with the mind into hisheart.” Timothy Ware

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: The sprinkling riteshould be given special emphasisduring the Easter season. Introducethe rite by relating each Sunday’sgospel message to our baptismalcommitment. Introduce the generalintercessions focusing on our needto turn towards God through thesacraments, so that we may receivethe strength to bear witness to theresurrected Christ.SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYERSELECTIONS:Rite of Blessing and Sprinklingwith Holy Water: See sixth set ofsample invocations.Preface: First for Easter.Roman Canon with proper com-memorations for EasterSolemn blessing for Easter

R.C.I.A.• Is seeing believing or is believing seeing? (see today’s reflection) Today’s gospel challenges us to be-lieve that we may see. The gospelrequires faith on our part so that wemay be open to the grace of God. Ifwe depend on our intellect to vali-date our faith we will never haveenough proof. Our brains alwaysmanifest doubts, which is a naturalfunction of the brain, to evaluate anddiscriminate. By dwelling in ourhearts, however, we begin to believebecause of God’s proximity to oursenses and we in turn see the truthsof our faith.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Ask the children if they know whata “doubting Thomas” is. Point outthat we all have a little of this qualityin us. Have they ever heard the ex-pression—seeing is believing? It’shard to believe in something youcannot see. There are every daythings that we take for granted

whether we see them or not: grav-ity, the sun in the sky, air to breathe, and so on. There is a place in ourspiritual hearts where it is possibleto believe things spiritual. If we findthis place we have found a greattreasure house of faith. The Biblepoints out that faith was always in-volved in the miracles performedby Jesus. He would say that yourfaith has healed you. Anne Frank isa great example of unshakeable be-lief in the goodness of humankindeven when her mind and sensestold her the opposite. If we believe,we will see for believing is seeing._______________________________________

FIRST READING: Acts 5: 27-32,40-41 “We are witnesses to thesewords as is the Holy Spirit.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 30“I will praise you, Lord, for youhave rescued me.”SECOND READING: Rev. 5: 11-14 “Worthy is the Lamb that wasslain to receive power and riches.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:”Christ is risen, creator of all; hehas shown pity on all people.”GOSPEL: Jn. 21: 1-19 “Jesus cameand took the bread and gave it tothem and in like manner the fish.”

SCRIPTURAL FOCUS: Word/Eucharist, fulfillment, joy, hope, path of life, glory

FOCUS: “Jesus stepped forward, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.”Through the nurturing of Christ,we are called to a life of servive.

REFLECTION: “He need have nofear of error in believing that God iscalling him to contemplation, re-gardless of what sort of person he isnow or has been in the past. It is notwhat you are nor what you havebeen that God sees with his all-merciful eyes, but what you desireto be.”Anonymous,The Cloud of Unknowing

“Even though the poor are oftenrough and unrefined, we must notjudge them from external appear-ances nor from the mental giftsthey have received. On the con-trary, if you consider the poor inthe light of faith, then you will ob-serve that they are taking the placeof the Son of God who chose to bepoor. Although in his passion healmost lost the appearance of aman and was considered a fool bythe Gentiles and a stumbling blockto the Jews, he showed them thathis mission was to preach to thepoor.” St. Vincent de Paul

“Peace in your own soul first, thenyou can think about making peacebetween other people. When we

are at the mercy of our own feelings,we misinterpret the most innocentacitons, always ready to believe theworst; whereas the peaceable per-son sees good everywhere; at peacewith ourselves we aren't suspiciousof others.” Thomas à Kempis

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Introduce the lit-urgy by saying today’s gospel chal-lenges us to open our minds to thesignificance of Christ in our lives.Rite of Blessing and sprinklingwith Holy Water.Sample General Intercessions:My brother and sisters, with joy atChrist’s rising from the dead, let us trustthat the God who heard and answeredthe prayers of Christ will hear our peti-tions:• For religious leaders everywhere: thatthey may serve to enlighten the minds ofthose who trust them;• For those who suffer loneliness anddessertion: that their sorrow be turned toeverlasting joy in awareness of Christresurrected;• For our friends and families, that inpeace we may all bear witness to Christ’sresurrection;• That we may abandon anger and self-righteous indignation, and that we mayforego judging others. Jesus said, “Judgenot.” Instead of judging our friends andrelatives, let us just love them, like Jesusdoes.Preface: Third for EasterIntroduce the breaking of the breadby proclaiming that this breadbrings us to awareness of Jesus whois inside us, behind us, and allaround us. Use a fraction rite Lambof God, drawing upon images fromtoday’s gospel.

R.C.I.A.This season is one of new begin-nings. Let us begin now to lead ourlives according to the way offered byJesus, in peace with love for all. Letus renew our devotion to mercy. Letus abandon old personal grievances, leaving final justice to be meted outby the only One who knows every-thing, God Himself.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word• Why do we pray for peace? When we are at peace we can thinkbetter, we can see things better. When we are angry, our minds aretoo clouded to see things clearly. Letus live in peace with our friends andfamily; after all Jesus loves every-one. How could we not love onewhom Jesus loves? Let us see Jesusin everyone, everyone. “Love oneanother as I have loved you.”_______________________________________

Preface: Second or third for Easter.Solemn Blessing of the Easter Sea-son orPrayers over the people: Sixth

R.C.I.A.There are no short cuts in life. Wecannot jump over the gate or find aneasy way through life’s challenges,we must accept life as it is. By livingthe way Christ told us to do, withlove for everyone, we will attain thereward he promised, eternal lifewith God. In what ways do we seek short termsolutions to our problems, or avoiddifficulties in life? Do we turn forconsolation to Jesus? Or to some-thing finite and temporary?Let us not forget Jesus is the GoodShepherd. This means we are beingguided, that a hand leads us in anuncertain world.

Fourth Sunday of Easter: Cycle C

Children’s Liturgy of the Word• What is a shepherd? What are theresponsibilities of a shepherd?• Why is it a good idea for sheep tofollow and respond to a shepherd? We call Jesus Lord because he is ourleader. We follow him because heknows the way. He is our shepherd.• What is the way of Jesus?• Where does he lead us?The way of Jesus is to live kindly, totreat people well. To love everyone.Living this way is our best hope ofachieving eternal life with God.Jesus leads us to eternal life _______________________________________

FIRST READING: Acts 14: 21-27”hey assembled the church andgave an account of all that God haddone with them.“RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps.145 ”I will praise your name for-ever, my king and my God.”or ”Alleluia”SECOND READING: Rev. 21: 1-5”He will wipe away all the tearsfrom their eyes.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:Jn. 13: 34”I give you a new com-mandment says the Lord: love oneanother as I have loved you.”GOSPEL: Jn. 13: 31-33, 34-35”I give you a new commandment:love one another.”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: love, re-main in Christ, Church, disciple-ship

FOCUS: "This is my command toyou: love one another as I haveloved you." This new dimension oflove allows us as friends of Christto share in God's deep love.

REFLECTION: ""Put Christ first, because he puts us first, and letnothing deter us from loving him."

St. Cyprian of Carthage

"In all deeds and words you shouldlook upon this Jesus as your model.Do so whether you are walking orkeeping silence, or speaking, whether you are alone or with oth-ers. He is perfect, and thus you willbe not only irreprehensible, butpraiseworthy." St. Bonaventure

“There is only one God and He isGod to all; therefore it is importantthat everyone is seen as equal be-fore God. I’ve always said weshould help a Hindu become a bet-ter Hindu, a Muslim become a bet-ter Muslim, a Catholic become abetter Catholic.” Mother Teresa

of Calcutta

“Two opposing forces influenceme: the force of good and force ofevil, the force of life and the force ofdeath. Being spiritual powers,

both are invisible. Aroused by myfree and sincere prayer, the goodforce always chases away the evilone, for the evil force derives itsstrength only from the evil con-cealed in me. To avoid the chillinginfluence of the evil spirit, we shouldalways have in our heart the JesusPrayer: 'Jesus, Son of God, havemercy on me.' Against the invisibledevil stands the invisible God,against him who is powerful standsHe who is the most Powerful of all.”

St. John of Kronstadt

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Introduce thesprinkling rite by stating that thesame Spirit that leads us to baptismleads us to a new level of love. Intro-duce the profession of faith by refer-ring to the spirit who gives us thestrength to proclaim our beliefs.Sample General Intercessions:Introduction—My sisters andbrothers, through the love that Jesushas commanded upon us, let us turnin prayer to God, the source of alllove.• For all who have dedicated themselvesto God, that he will help them to reach anew level of love:• For peace among nations, that Godmay rid the world of violence throughthe love of Christ:• For the aged who suffer from loneli-ness and infirmity, that we will sustainthem by our love:• For all of us gathered here, that Godwill teach us to use wisely the goodthings he has given us:

Preface: Second for Easter.Prayers over the people: Second

R.C.I.A.What does it mean to love as Jesusloved? What's wrong with loving as wewould love? Our love has limitations in itself, but united with the Spirit, there areno boundaries. The command-ment to love as Jesus loved givesus grace to reach a new dimensionof understanding in terms ofwhat's most important.

Before Jesus left, he promised togive his disciples something spe-cial. What was he referring to? Hesaid that the Holy Spirit wouldcome and guide them and remindthem of the things they needed toknow.Jesus didn't' teach his followers eve-rything but sent the Holy Spirit tohelp people understand life andGod._______________________________________

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: HolySpirit, love, community, mission

FOCUS: “The Holy Spirit, whomthe Father will send in my name, will instruct you and remind you ofall that I told you.”

REFLECTION: “How could therebe any other Totality beyond him,or another Principle or Power oranother God? For God who is thetotality of all these must include allthings in his infinite being.” St. Iranaeus

“The almighty and most holyWord of the Father pervades thewhole of reality, everywhere un-folding his power and shining onall things visible and invisible. Hesustains it all and binds it togetherin himself. He leaves nothing de-void of his power but gives life andkeeps it in being throughout all ofcreation and in each individual.” Theophane the Recluse

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Consider shiftingthe emphasis, beginning with thisSunday from the resurrection tothe coming of the Holy Spirit. Apre-Mass invocation to the HolySpirit would be an appropriateway to begin the liturgies between

now and Pentecost. This could con-sist of a music piece such as a Litanyor hymn to the Holy Spirit. Intro-duce the liturgy by proclaiming thatthe Holy Spirit comes to us from theFather to instruct us and remind us.The Spirit draws us into a deeperunderstanding of God which wecome to share at Sunday worship.General intercessions could in-clude a response such as “Come,Holy Spirit.”Sample General Intercessions:Introduction—Gathered togetherin Christ, as brothers and sisters, letus call to mind that which God hasbestowed upon us and ask him tohear the prayers which he himselfinspires us to ask:• For the Holy Church of God: that itremain connected to the Father throughJesus;• For the world in which we live: that ourhealth and peace be based on mutualrespect and cooperation;• For all those who suffer from lonelinessand infirmity: that God may give themstrength and courage:• For our community and families: thatwe may always value our ties and bondswith each other.

Preface: Third for Easter. orSolemn Blessing of the EasterSeason

R.C.I.A.“...not to burden you beyond what isessential.”What is essential? Why? It is essen-tial that we love one another asChrist loved us in order to bringabout God’s Kingdom on earth. DidGod provide us with guidance andhelp so that we can do what is essen-tial? To prepare for the feast of Pen-tecost, think about the role of theHoly Spirit in our being able to live alife in God.• In today’s gospel what does Jesussay about the role of the Holy Spirit? • What does it mean to be true toGod’s word? This would be an appropriate timeto begin discussing and studying thelectionary on the Holy Spirit.

Sixth Sunday of Easter: Cycle C

Children’s Liturgy of the WordAsk the children what it feels like tobe left alone or to have someone goaway for a long time. How did theyfeel? Was there any consolation thatmade the separation easier?Jesus left this world, but before hedid, he promised to give his follow-ers something special.• What was this special gift?Jesus said he would send the HolySpirit to teach us and remind us ofwhat we need to do. What do weneed to do? Why? It is essential thatwe love one another as Christ lovedus in order to bring about God’sKingdom on earth._______________________________________

FOCUS: “Go and teach all nations, says the Lord; I am with you al-ways, until the end of the world.

REFLECTION: “Our Lord doesn’tneed to make use of books or teach-ers in the instruction of souls; isn’the himself the Teacher of all Teach-ers, conveying knowledge withnever a word spoken? For myself, Inever heard the sound of his voice, but I know that he dwells withinme all the time, guiding me andinspiring me whenever I do or sayanything. A light, of which I’dcaught no glimmer before, comesto me at the very moment when it’sneeded.” St. Therese of Lisieux

“Since he is the Sun of Justice, hefittingly calls his disciples the lightof the world. The reason for this isthat through them, as throughshining rays, he has poured out thelight of the knowledge of himselfupon the entire world. For by

manifesting the light of truth, theyhave dispelled the darkness of errorfrom the hearts of men.”

Be-cause of this presence, God alwayshears the prayers of the faithful:• May we joyfully proclaim and live ourfaith in Christ always;• Let us give thanks for God’s gifts to us.Through his gifts, peace and well-beingshall prevail in this world, and shall leadus to salvation in the world to come;• For the strength of our families, com-munity, and the whole world, may welearn to see Christ in all the poor andsuffering people of this world.Preface: AscensionSolemn Blessing for the Ascension

R.C.I.A. The ascension of Jesus to heavenlifts us to fill his role on earth. Nowwe are elevated and enabled to do

God’s work. We are not mere spec-tators. We are Christ’s hands andhis instruments of salvation for thewhole world. We love one anotheras he loved us.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Jesus said he had to leave us, yet hewould be with us till the end of time. How is this possible? He is with usin the form of the Holy Spirit, who isour comforter and helper. In thisway we are connected to God nowand always. After Jesus went to Heaven, thedisciples were standing aroundlooking up at the sky in amazement. Some angels appeared to them andtold them to get on with what Jesushad told them to do. And that’swhat we have to do, too. (What didJesus tell us to do?)_______________________________________

FIRST READING: Act 2: 1-11“They were all filled with the HolySpirit and began to speak differentlanguages.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps.104 “Lord, send out your Spirit andrenew the face of the earth.”or “Alleluia”SECOND READING: 1 Cor. 12: 3-7, 12-13 “In the one Spirit we wereall baptized making one body.Jews as well as Greeks, slaves aswell as citizens.”SEQUENCE:“Come, O Spirit, from on high!”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:“Come Holy Spirit, fill the heartsof your faithful; and kindle in themthe fire of your love.”GOSPEL: Jn. 20: 19-23 “As theFather sent me, so I send you. Re-ceive the Holy Spirit.”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: HolySpirit, fire of love, sending out.

FOCUS: “As the Father sent me, soI send you. Receive the HolySpirit.”

REFLECTION: “Life is thestrength to act. Spiritual life is thestrength to act spiritually, accord-ing to the will of God. Man has lostthis strength; therefore until it isrestored to him, he cannot livespiritually, no matter how much heintends to. That is why the flow ofgrace into the soul of a believer isessential for a true Christian life.True Christian life is the life ofgrace. A man makes some reli-gious resolution: but in order to beable to act according to it, it is nec-essary that grace be united with hisspirit. When this union is present, moral strength, hitherto evidentonly temporarily in his first enthu-siasm, is impressed on his spiritand remains there always. This re-establishment of the moralstrength of the spirit is effected bythe regenerating action of baptism, through which man is granted jus-tification and the strength to actafter God in righteousness and trueholiness.” Theophane the Recluse

“Those who are led by the HolySpirit have true ideas; that is why somany ignorant people are wiserthan the learned. The Holy Spirit islight and strength.” St. John Vianney

“Since he is the Sun of Justice, hefittingly calls his disciples the lightof the world. The reason for this isthat through them, as through shin-ing rays, he has poured out the lightof the knowledge of himself uponthe entire world. For by manifestingthe light of truth, they have dis-pelled the darkness of error from thehearts of men.”

Chromatius of Aquilei

Children’s Liturgy of the Word How are people different while atthe same time similar? Tie this intothe celebration of Pentecost whenpeople from different nationalitiesconverged for a shared experience. The Holy Spirit made it possible forpeople of all languages to under-stand what was spoken. How does the church function likethis, with many nationalities con-verging in prayer, with a commongospel perspective?_______________________________________
