    LESSON PLAN LEA AMBION

    Algebra 1 Period 3, 4, 6 December 13-14, 2010

LESSON TITLE: Car Project (2 days)

    GRADE LEVEL: Freshman/Sophomore High School

TEXTBOOK OR RESOURCE AND RELEVANT PAGES:

    www.kbb.com

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to collect data on car prices

over a given number of year, plot these data points, create a line of best fit and an

equation that represents their data. Students will also be able to make predictions based

    on their equations.

    STANDARDS BEING ADDRESSED:

A1.1 A Select and justify functions and equations to model and

    solve problems.

A1.1 B Solve problems that can be represented by linear

    functions, equations, and inequalities.

A1.2 B Recognize the multiple uses of variables, determine allpossible values of variables that satisfy prescribed conditions, and evaluate

    algebraic expressions that involve variables.

A1.3.A Determine whether a relationship is a function andidentify the domain, range, roots, and independent and dependent variables.

A1.3.B Represent a function with a symbolic expression, as a

graph, in a table, and using words, and make connections among these

    representations.

    A1.3.C Evaluate f x( ) at a (i.e., f a( ) ) and solve for x in the

    equation f x b( ) = .

A1.4.B Write and graph an equation for a line given the slope and the y-intercept,the slope and a point on the line, or two points on the line, and translate between

    forms of linear equations.

A1.4.C Identify and interpret the slope and intercepts of a linear function,

including equations for parallel and perpendicular lines.

A1.6.D Find the equation of a linear function that best fits bivariate data that arelinearly related, interpret the slope and y-intercept of the line, and use the

    equation to make predictions.

ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING: Students will be assessed individually during theirtime to do homework in class and posters will be a demonstration of the concepts thatthey understand.

MATERIALS: laptops (if the computer lab is not available), poster paper, markers

    EXPECTATIONS OF THE STUDENT:

Before class: During class: After class:

    Agenda:

    Algebra 1 Period 3, 4, 6 December 13-14, 2010

    -Students will be able to

    perform the calculations for

    the line of best fit

    -Students will be able to

    collect data and represent

    their data mathematically

    -Students will take

    advantage of researching

    other cars using kbb

    INSTRUCTION:

    First Day of Instruction:

(15 minutes) Introduce car project and show how to use the website

www.kbb.com to find data. Students are expected to complete Part I of the

    project on the first day.

o Ask a student to volunteer the make and model that they like to use as an

    example.

(35 minutes) Students will have the rest of the class to do research in thecomputer lab or on available laptops. If students are done collecting data, have

them answer the questions on the handout.

o Get an idea of how far each group of students have gotten to decidewhether more time is needed the next day for research.

    Second Day of Instruction:

(10 minutes) Allow students to finish collecting data, however remind them thatthis will be the last day of the project.

o Remind students of what is expected on the poster boards

o Pass out poster and markers

(30 minutes) Students will create their posters

(10 minutes) Time allotted to clean up and put up finished posters.

o If time allows, have students share what they have discovered about their

research about they potential car they want.
