BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF LEGAL PROFESSIONALSExtern Program-An Overview

The Loyola Extern Program is a complement to the clinical program and has been designed to provide students with practical legal experience under the supervision of a judge or attorney and a supervising attorney from the School of Law. The extern program provides students with an opportunity to become immersed in a specific area of law as they begin to develop their professional identity and as they make the transition from law student to practicing attorney. Mentoring students is the key component to the success of this extern program.

Externships are available in the following areas: Judicial (open to all students including 1Ls for summer) Child Law Corporate Criminal Entertainment/Creative Arts Government/Public Interest Health Law Intellectual Property Intensive Field Placement

Requirements and Credit Hours Externship opportunities for academic credit are available

to all current law students upon completion of all required first year courses (Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Property, Torts, and Legal Writing).

Students may elect to apply and register for any of the above listed externships for 2 or 3 hours of academic credit Pass/Fail.

Students may also apply and register for the Externship-Intensive Field Placement (course number 599) for 2 or 3 hours of academic credit which will be graded.

Externship Course Descriptions 583 - Externship – Child Law (2, 3). Students who have completed all required first

year courses (Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Property, Torts, and Legal Writing) are eligible to serve as Child Law externs. Students may receive two or three hours of ungraded credit per semester for supervised work performed at an approved field placement. Certain field placements may limit eligibility to students who have completed certain courses or who have obtained their Rule 711 license. This externship is designed to provide students with practical experience under the supervision of a practicing attorney and a supervising attorney from the School of Law. Work performed in this setting will enhance the student's understanding of legal issues as they relate to children. The externship course includes a classroom component which has been designed to complement and support the field placement. (Gough, Kieffer)  

Externship Course Descriptions 584 - Externship - Health Law (2, 3). Students who have completed all required first year

courses (Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Property, Torts, and Legal Writing) are eligible to serve as Health Law externs and may receive two or three hours of ungraded credit per semester for supervised legal work performed at an approved field placement. Certain field placements may limit eligibility to students who have completed certain courses or who have obtained their Rule 711 license. This externship is designed to provide students with practical experience under the supervision of a practicing attorney and a supervising attorney from the School of Law. The externship course includes a classroom component which has

been designed to complement and support the field placement. (Gough, Kieffer)   585 - Externship - Corporate (2, 3). Students who have completed all required first year

courses (Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Property, Torts, and Legal Writing) are eligible to apply for a corporate externship and may receive two or three hours of ungraded credit per semester for supervised work performed in an approved extern field placement site. Certain field placements may limit eligibility to students who have completed certain courses or who have obtained their Rule 711 license. This externship will enhance the student's understanding of in-house counsel’s responsibilities within a corporate legal environment. The course is designed to provide students with practical experience under the supervision of a practicing attorney and a supervising attorney from the School of Law. The externship course includes a classroom component which has been designed to complement and support the field placement. (Gough, Kieffer)  

Externship Course Descriptions 587 - Externship - Criminal (2, 3). Students who have completed all required first year courses

(Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Property, Torts, and Legal Writing) may receive two or three hours of ungraded credit per semester for supervised work performed in an approved field placement site. Certain field placements may limit eligibility to students who have completed certain courses or who have obtained their Rule 711 license. This externship is designed to enhance the student’s understanding of the criminal justice system and to provide practical experience under the supervision of a practicing attorney and a supervising attorney from the School of Law. The externship course includes a classroom component

which has been designed to complement and support the field placement. (Gough, Kieffer)   588 - Externship - Government/Public Interest (2, 3). Students who have

completed all required first year courses (Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Property, Torts, and Legal Writing) may receive two or three hours of ungraded credit per semester for supervised work performed in an approved extern field placement site. Certain field placements may limit eligibility to students who have completed certain courses or who have obtained their Rule 711 license. This course has been designed to enhance the student's understanding of the practice of law in city, county, state and/or federal government offices or in a variety of public service and not-for profit-agencies under the supervision of a practicing attorney and a supervising attorney from the School of Law. The externship course includes a classroom component which has been designed to complement and support the field placement. (Gough, Kieffer)  

Externship Course Descriptions 589 - Externship - Judicial (2, 3). Students who have completed all required first year courses

(Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Property, Torts, and Legal Writing) may receive two or three hours of ungraded credit per semester for supervised work performed in chambers under the supervision of a member of the judiciary and his or her law clerks and a supervising attorney from the School of Law. The externship course includes a classroom component which has been designed to complement and

support the field placement. (Gough, Kieffer)    590 - Externship – Intellectual Property (2, 3). Students who have completed all first

year courses (Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Property, Torts, and Legal Writing) and the survey course in Intellectual Property may receive two or three hours of ungraded credit per semester for supervised work performed in an approved field placement site. Certain field placements may limit eligibility to students who have completed certain course work or who have obtained their Rule 711 license. This externship is designed to provide students with practical experience under the supervision of a practicing attorney and a supervising attorney from the School of Law. The externship course includes a classroom component which has been designed to complement and support the field placement. Externship Course Descriptions 545-Externship-Entertainment/Creative Arts (2, 3). Students who have completed

all first year courses (Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Property, Torts, and Legal Writing) may receive two or three hours of ungraded credit per semester for supervised work performed in an approved field placement site. Certain field placements may limit eligibility to students who have completed certain course work or who have obtained their Rule 711 license. This externship is designed to provide students with practical experience under the supervision of a practicing attorney and a supervising attorney from the School of Law. The externship course includes a classroom component which has been designed to complement and support the field placement. 599-Externship-Intensive Field Placement (2-3). Students who have completed all first year courses (Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Property, Torts, and Legal Writing) and who wish to receive graded credit for work performed in an approved field placement may apply for this externship. Certain field placements may limit eligibility to students who have completed certain course work or who have obtained their Rule 711 license. Students enrolled in this course may receive two or three hours of graded credit for supervised work performed in an approved field placement. This externship includes a classroom component that focuses on the performance of discrete legal tasks. It has been designed to allow students an opportunity to further develop practical lawyering skills. Students will be graded on classroom participation, simulations, practice area based drafting and research assignments, and field placement evaluations. There will be no final examination. (Gough)

711 Law License Under Illinois State Law, students studying

for the J.D. degree who have completed 51 credit hours are eligible to apply to the Illinois Supreme Court for a 711 license, which allows them to practice law in an authorized setting under the direct supervision of a licensed attorney.

How to apply for your 711 license 711 Application forms are available at:

http://www.luc.edu/law/current/pdfs/711form.pdf. The Registrar's Office will sign a student's application form

once it verifies that the student has in fact successfully completed the required 51.0 credit hours.

Students need not have the signature of a site supervisor before submitting the form to the Registrar for certification, although this signature is necessary before the student can submit the form to the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts.

Students may submit a completed application form to the Registrar in room 1203.

Judicial Externships Students may apply for a judicial externship through the Law

School to: Federal District Court Judges and Magistrates Federal Bankruptcy Court Judges Circuit Court of Cook County Judges Additionally, students may find placements through the

American Bar Association, Just the Beginning Foundation, or through personal contacts with members of the judiciary.

For placements with members of the judiciary outside of the city of Chicago, students may apply for externship credit with permission of the Director of Experiential Learning.

Interview Process with Judges You must apply via Symplicity by uploading your resume and

transcript. Loyola mails your materials to the various judges. The judges contact the students they would like to interview.

We do not know the time frame the judges will use in interviewing and extending offers.

If you accept an interview with a federal judge, you must be ready to accept an offer. You can accept more than one interview, but must be ready to accept an offer from a judge immediately and cancel all other interviews.

Example Scenario: You have an interview with Judge X on Monday and Judge Y on Tuesday. Judge X makes you an offer at your interview, you must accept and cancel your interview with Judge Y.

How to apply to the extern sites: For judicial sites only: Jan. 23-31st you will be able to submit your

resume and transcript to apply for externships via symplicity. Follow the symplicity instructions handout.

Please note some extern sites may have additional requirements including, but not limited to, 3L status and 711 Licensure. Certain sites have additional application requirements and require you to apply on your own. These sites are listed at: http://www.luc.edu/law/career/ext_sites.html

Course Requirements (Non-Graded) 1. Students must attend all class sessions. 2. Students must work at least 8 hours/week not to exceed 15

hours/week during the semester and 20 hours/week in the summer. 3. Prepare or cause to be prepared all supervisor and student

agreements and evaluations. 4. Students prepare a project list and track all hours. 5. Students attend individual meetings with course instructor. 6. Students complete all classroom reading and writing

assignments. 7. Other assignments as described on the course syllabus.

Course Requirements (con’t) 8. Weekly writing assignments on issues of

professionalism, civility and lawyering skills. Final assignment reflection on trial observation (10 hours).

9. Students will deliver an oral presentation on a topical issue of relevance to the bench and bar.

10. Final class devoted to student reflection on work performed in the field.

Externship-Intensive Field Placement In addition to the requirements listed above

for the ungraded externship, students will be expected to participate in classroom discussions, simulations, and practice based drafting and research assignments.

General Reminders: Students are expected to work at the extern site a

minimum of 110 hours for two credits and 165 hours for three credits in addition to the other requirements of this course.

Students may not receive credit for work performed as an extern if they are also paid for that work.

Students may receive 2 or 3 hours of academic credit per semester. A total of 6 hours of academic credit may be earned during your law school career.
