When youre acting, youre risking rejection, Mr.
Clint Vaught (Oral Communications) said. People
fear public speaking because they dont want to risk
rejection. If you dont feel the butteries and anxiety
when on stage, then youre in the wrong place; you
need that adrenaline to stay focused and on task.
Mr. Vaught had a reputation as the eccentric Oral
Communications & Debate teacher, but he had another
personaas an actor on center stage. Mr. Vaught
participated in multiple plays, lms, and television series.
His professional acting began when he auditioned for
the leading role, George, in Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Vaught also played Hance Purcell in the lm,Assisted
Living, directed by Elliot Greenebaum. He appeared in
other lms, such as Paper Cut and a locally-lmed movie,
My True Self. Most recently, Mr. Vaught played the role of
Chip Womack on Republican Sex and Marriage Advice, an
online satirical show. Free time did not come easy for
him when trying to live out two dreams at once.
Teaching was not the career Mr. Vaught had pictured
himself having when he rst began college, where
we started out as a theatre production major. While
trying to make it big time, he knew that there was no
guarantee hed make enough of a living to provide for
a family. He needed a back up plan. Substitute teaching
brought him to realize how much he loved investing his
time and his skills into students while having time to
audition for plays.
Mr. Vaught signed a contract to work for the school
and two weeks later he received news that he landed a
major part in a movie. Mr. Vaught made the decision to
turn down the role. The guys Ive come close to through acting are
jealous of me, he said. I get to experience acting while
having a home that is stable. I get to see my family and
Im doing what I love.
Mr. Vaught does not regret his decision to teach.
Teachers invest more in others. Actors invest more
time in themselves, he said.
