Mormon Reservoir fills up! Our cup runneth over! The cheery side of water retention! onday! It happened! Given a final level boost by an overnight rain squall, Mormon Reservoir topped out sometime Monday, and a modest trickle (visible above) began to find its way over the lava-floored overflow channel on the West Side of Mormon Dam! This feat of acute water retention is a milestone event for the venerable irrigation reservoir, which has seen a respectably long series of comparatively

lean years for collection of irrigation water for the Twin Lakes irrigation company. In its overflow condition, the reservoir (formed in 1908 by the construction of Mormon Dam impounds 19,280 of genuine Camas Prairie water from McKesson Creek and Dairy Creek. o how long has it been since Mormon topped out? Hmmm. It’s not clear, according to Camas Irrigation District Watermaster Rusty Kramer. “There are some very sketchy old records about

levels at Mormon Reservoir. I swear it filled when I was a kid, but I just found a quote from the 2005 DEQ Camas Creek Watershed study that stated that Mormon has only filled three times in 40 years. I’m not sure where they got that info from -- nothing officially seems to be recorded about that with IDWR.” Kramer noted that Camas Water District 37B has only been in existence since 2014, but cited District records as showing that the reservoir, in 2014, supplied 10 days of irrigation (no initial level recorded), and exactly 0 days of irrigation in 2015 (no initial level recorded). By contrast, last year the reservoir supplied 49 days of irrigation beginning with an initial estimated level of 40% full. It seems that the Mormon Reservoir member irrigators will have a comparatively wet season in 2017. Kramer said this year’s bonus runoff has topped off other district reservoirs as well: “All six other reservoirs in our water district have been spilling since the first of April. Cow Creek, Frances, Olson, Kelly, McHan, and Spring Creek.” ❦

The last “Living in the New Rural West” book talk! Tuesday in the library! Reservation Blues! Read for your life!!!!!

ock from the Rez! It’s coming! Our makeup session for a January library event interrupted by a Snow Day! Well, it’s back, scheduled for April 25 at 6 p.m. The event will be a discussion about

Reservation Blues, the highly regarded and desperately funny novel by Sherman Alexie! Copies are available at the Library! ISU scholar Dan Hunt will be present to stimulate discussion! Reservation Blues is a story about friends on the Spokane reservation who form a rock and roll band – Coyote Springs -- magically furnished with bluesman Robert Johnson’s enchanted guitar. It’s a funny, heartbreaking, and adventurous story. As with all genuine literary events, refreshments will be served! ❦

Last week of offer! CCHS Class of 2020 raises funds from bulb orders! Hurry!

he Last Last Word from Heather Sabin! “The Class of 2020 has taken over an amazing fundraiser from a previous graduating class. The fundraiser will be going on from till April 21, at which time the class

will be collecting spring bulb orders from the Dutch Mill nursery. The orders should be delivered sometime before Mother’s Day. If there are any questions, contact me at 421-5426, or anyone from the class of 2020. This is a super fundraiser as it provides the class with 50% of the total profit they earn.
