from Doylestown to Lower Bucks Lower Bucks Family YMCA had a momentous year of philanthropy and service to the Bucks County community. In 2017, the Y had a historic level of donations and volunteer service while also giving away $451,041 in financial assistance and expanding our service in the community.

Community impact programs like the Y’s 7th Grade Membership Initiative, 2nd Grade Swim, Veterans Wellness program and Diabetes Prevention classes were expanded across the county, helping a record 473 people.

To raise awareness of the service the Y provides, I walked 28-miles from the Doylestown branch to the Fairless Hills branch in December, joined by Karen along the way. The response from the community was overwhelming. The Y received a record number of individual gifts totaling nearly $150,000 in support of the walk.

None of this would be possible without the support of our generous donors who give our staff the opportunity to make a difference. In the following pages you will see how donations are put to work at Lower Bucks Family YMCA. You will read stories of our donors and what inspires them to give and meet the people whose lives are changed by their generosity. Looking forward, we strive for excellence in serving our members and community and we thank you for your support.

For Jeff Bruemmer, it is all about helping kids. As a Trustee of The Bruemmer Family CLAT, Jeff wants to help give children opportunities they may not otherwise have due to financial constraints. “It makes me feel good that I can be part of making those experiences happen,” says Jeff.

Jeff says he does a lot of research before supporting an organization and when he looked into Lower Bucks Family YMCA, he liked what he saw. He was impressed by the array of programming offered for kids, from camp, to childcare, to fitness programs. “I don’t know of any organizations that are as multifaceted as the Y,” says Jeff.

“I’m a true believer in what the Y does.”

RECIPIENT When families fall on hard times, it is often the children that suffer most. That was Nick Young’s fear when his wife’s mental illness left the couple in need of care for their two young children, with no way to pay for it. “I found myself not able to afford basic necessities,” says Nick.

Nick applied for financial assistance to enroll his two daughters, five-year-old Isadora and four-year-old Avianna, at the Youth Education Center in Fairless Hills. The Y came through, offering the Young family a scholarship, an offer that meant the world to Nick. “It was a huge burden lifted off me.”

Today Isadora and Avianna are thriving in school and even learning how to swim. Nick says it takes a big weight off his shoulders knowing his girls are cared for in a safe, educational environment with excellent teachers. His wife calls the YMCA “a blessing” and they are grateful for the donor support that makes itall possible.

“Money comes and goes, but I couldn’t ever put a price on the impact (the donors) have made on my family.”

DONORRediClinic has been a generous supporter of Lower Bucks Family YMCA since 2015, first supporting our Color Run and now as a sponsor for our monthly Active Older Adults Socials, as well as the Senior Holiday Party. “As a YMCA sponsor, we’ve been thrilled to share this mission and our messaging with older active adults in the Lower Bucks community,” says RediClinic District Manager Larry Hill.

RECIPIENT “As far as I’m concerned, the Y saved my life. ” Twenty-three years ago Jerry Blanchard was lonely. Her parents had recently passed away and her children were grown. On top of that, she had painful arthritis. “I was in a bad way,” remembers Jerry. She knew she had to do something and so she joined Lower Bucks Family YMCA. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Y turned Jerry’s life around, both physically and socially. She stays active participating in aquatics and SilverSneakers classes five days a week and has formed friendships that have lasted decades. She pays it forward by coordinating a monthly Active Older Adult Social, which often has as many as 75 attendees or more. Jerry says it’s rewarding to help older adults find their place at the Y, like she has. “I believe in the Y with all my heart and that’s why I volunteer.”

RECIPIENT Rodney Wyatt is feeling good. Just a few weeks into the Veterans Wellness Program in Fairless Hills, he feels stronger and has more energy. Rodney is a veteran of both the Marine Corps and Army Guard. He runs a nonprofit helping other veterans find jobs, but taking care of himself has taken a backseat to helping others. The Veterans Wellness Program is “getting me back to taking care of myself,” says Rodney.

Perhaps most important to Rodney, he feels connected to other veterans again. He says participants push each other to achieve more during workouts and enjoy chatting during downtime. Rodney is grateful to the donors that make programs like this possible. He says it is a great way to support the veteran community in Lower Bucks County and he’s spreading the word. “I let every veteran I meet know about this program.”

DONORBrian McLeod grew up as a Y kid and today gives back in many ways. “As a board member and donor, I am happy to support the Y and its mission to serve those most in need. It’s a wonderful way to strengthen the community and make a difference,” says Brian.

Support from donors like Brian makes Community Impact Programs, such as Veterans Wellness, possible. Brian encourages others to consider Lower Bucks Family YMCA when making their giving decisions. “If you want to make an impact in our community then the Y is a great organization to choose.”
