The facUi of tho escape were not Icarnod by the uewspnpers until late Suit- day morning. There are nimotu that Mc- (Jarlglo has been spirited away in accordaiuv with a plan of tho states attorney, but for what pur|io<« has not been made dear. Tho officials here had not the slightest idea what direction ho took—unless the supposition mentioned is eorrect—and tho escape was evidently null planned and assisted hy friends outside. When tho sheriff went to the bath-raun he had to pass through Mrs. McUarlgle's sl^p- ing-room. A WEEK'S BUSINESS REVIEWED DUN & CO. ay I Peiullni; SulU Over the Baltlmoro & Ohio Deal Trnil to Dlsturh Wall Street—Ex- Iranrtllnary I.ow Price of Wheat Anxiety About the Supply of Money— Failures for a Week. NEW YOUK, July 93.—R. (!. Dun & Co.'a weekly review of trade says; With business progressing well throughout the country, crop proeiiwcts excellent, iron production larger than at any previous period, and money in abundant supply, Wall street is disturbed Ix'cause a dream it has been chas- ing for months suddenly fades away, and Mr. (iarrott announces tho failure of Mr. Ives to buy tho Baltimore & Ohio. Tho in- cident illustrates tho wcaknoss of Wall street as a barometer. For four months the street has been discounting tho lieneflclal re- sults of this expected "settlement.'' and all sort:, nl purchases, loans, commitmonts, and calculations have been based thereon. But for these, the ruteiition of tho Haltimore A* Ohio by its old owners would disturb no- body. But now litigation, Involving th" value of many projiertitt?, directly and in- directly, lias been cominonced ami may over- load them w-itb uncortalnty for somo tlm^. and meanwhile no one wants to buy a share in a lawsuit. Wheat, at 8fi^ cents for Na ^ ml winter in July is lower than it has been l>;fore in that month for more than forty years, and close to the lowest price for that period in any month. This is tho direct result of spec, ulation w hich drew many million bushels from farmers' hands, where cosi of carrying was nothing, info tht hands of dealers wboareanxioas to unload before now wheat comes. Tho 20,000,000 bushels in a few e!i p valors are heavier that 59,000,000 bushels would lie in farmers' bins. (Still purchases 1 from farmers for some time to come are prob able, and tho cousequi-nt delay in demand for money to use in crop moving may iiossiMy Ix; helpful. Prices generally mv low, in spite of many speculations. As evidence nf the absorption of floating capital in fixed forms, and its ef- fects, it may bo stated that tho samo quanti- ties of articles, representing nine-tenths o( the aggregate consumption of the country, which could bavo been bought a year ago for would now cost only about f lOO.lfi, and they were not 4 per cent, higher in January last. So small a change in princes after an expansion of (65,000,000 during the year, in ciivulation, is surprising. The ofllcial bulletin of tho Iron and Steol assoeiation makes tho production for the half year 3,051,000 tons, and reports a slight in- crease iu stocks of unsold iron, making the consumption 12,000 tons less than production and imports, U'.'ports from all parts of the country are uniformly favorable cs to state of trade for tbe season, and collections are roportod good or fair at all points save two. Tho croj: prospects are also pronounced more favora- ble, though the extent of damage done by drou(;bt and insects can not bo nctly determined. One feature in current re- ports that should be noticed Ls that the south actually made less iron by 14,000 tons in the first half of IS37 than in the last half of 18S0, notwithstanding nil the expansion of facilities widely heralded, and there aro signs of abate- ment of real estate enthusiasm at some west- ern points. Anxiety about the supply of money for the fall revives discussion of treasury operations, but indications are that no purchase of bonds will bo made if it can IK> avoided. Tho treas- ury has taken in $2,000,0(10 more than it ha< paid out during the past week, but large dis- bursements are expected nliout Aug. 1. Ex ports improve, for three weeks having ex- deeded last year's by ii per cent., against the incivaso of l-'i." per cent, in imports. For- eign exchange tend* upward, however, and somo sales of s'curities on foreign ac- count are reported. Th - coursa of stocks has indicated hesitation and weakness and the narrow bank reserves for Lie season affects with timidity most s|ioci»!ativc market. Thorc wore in the I'nited States during the jwist seven days 147 failures, ami in Canada, 25; total, 172. For the pn-eedmn week 17il. a n d for tho s u m u we««k in InsO, IS! AN AQUATIC FAILURE. July 2".. —The Hanlan- Gaudaur boat-raw Saturday was prolmbly the giodle.it llzz'.o of race ever rowed in tho west It was an- nounced that the con- test would lie for J1,000 a side, the championship of America, and to each of the participants a slice of the gate re- ceipts. Tho race was by no means a sue- cess, not even in tbe mattorof gate money. GAI DAVIL Some 1,200 i^oplo only wore present. Instead of the 10,000 or 12,000 expected. Tho whole affair was badly managed, and there was a general suspicion that the race was a bippo- drome. The race was rowed under peculiar condi- tions, like tho last contest Tho Decoration Day race look place in a blinding rain, that prevented a close watch being kept Sotur day they rowed in the dark, and watching of any kind was imiiossible. When the race was won by Hanlan, Gaudaur was a quarter of a mile away out in the middlo of tho lake No one on the shore could see him, and many be lievel be had capsized. Colored Troop* Rarred Out. F a i l u r e s fo r a Week .

NEW YOUK, J u l y 93.—R. (!. Dun & Co.'a weekly review of t r ade says; Wi th business progressing well t h roughou t the country, c rop proeiiwcts excellent, iron production la rger than a t any previous period, and money in a b u n d a n t supply, Wall street is disturbed Ix'cause a d r e a m it has been chas-ing for months suddenly fades away, and Mr. ( iarrot t announces tho fai lure of Mr. Ives t o buy tho Balt imore & Ohio. Tho in-cident i l lustrates tho wcaknoss of Wall s treet as a barometer . For fou r months the street has been discounting tho lieneflclal re-sults of this expected "sett lement. ' ' and all sort:, nl purchases, loans, commitmonts, and calculations have been based thereon. But for these, t he ruteiition of tho Haltimore A* Ohio by its old owners would d i s tu rb no-body. But now lit igation, Involving th" va lue of m a n y projiertitt?, directly and in-directly, lias been cominonced ami may over-load them w-itb uncor ta ln ty for somo tlm^. and meanwhile no one wan t s to buy a share in a lawsuit.

Wheat , a t 8 f i ^ cents for N a ^ m l winter in Ju ly is lower than it has been l>;fore in t h a t month fo r more t han for ty years, and close to the lowest price f o r tha t period in a n y month . This is tho d i r ec t result of spec, ulat ion w hich drew m a n y million bushels f rom farmers ' hands, where cosi of c a r r y i n g was nothing, info t h t hands of dealers w b o a r e a n x i o a s to unload before now wheat comes. Tho 20,000,000 bushels in a few e!ip

valors are heavier that 59,000,000 bushels would lie in farmers ' bins. (Still purchases 1

f rom f a r m e r s fo r some t ime to come are prob able, and tho cousequi-nt delay in demand for money to use in c rop mov ing may iiossiMy Ix; helpful.

Prices general ly mv low, in spite of many speculations. As evidence nf the absorption of floating cap i ta l in fixed forms, and its ef-fects, it m a y bo stated t h a t tho samo quant i-ties of art icles, represen t ing nine-tenths o( t he aggrega te consumpt ion of the count ry , which could bavo been b o u g h t a yea r ago for

would now cost only about f lOO.lfi, and they were not 4 per cent, higher in J a n u a r y last. So small a change in princes a f t e r an expansion of (65,000,000 du r ing the year , in ciivulation, is surprising.

The ofllcial bulletin of tho Iron and Steol assoeiation makes tho product ion for t he half year 3,051,000 tons, and reports a slight in-crease iu stocks of unsold iron, making the consumption 12,000 tons less t han production and imports,

U'.'ports f rom all pa r t s of the count ry are un i formly favorable cs t o s ta te of t rade for tbe season, and collections a r e roportod good or f a i r a t all points save two. Tho croj: prospects are also pronounced more favora-ble, though the extent of d a m a g e done by drou(;bt and insects can not bo nctly determined. One fea tu re in cu r ren t re-ports that should be not iced Ls t h a t t he south actually m a d e less iron b y 14,000 tons in t he first half of IS37 than in t he last half of 18S0, notwithstanding nil the expansion of facilities widely heralded, and the re aro signs of abate-ment of real estate en thus iasm at some west-ern points.

Anxiety about the supply of money for the fall revives discussion of t reasury operat ions, but indicat ions a r e tha t no purchase of bonds will bo made if it can IK> avoided. Tho treas-ury has taken in $2,000,0(10 more t han it ha< paid out d u r i n g the pas t week, but la rge dis-bursements a r e expected nliout Aug. 1. Ex ports improve, for three weeks having ex-deeded last year 's by ii p e r cent., against the incivaso of l-'i." pe r cent, in imports. WASHIN'.TON CITV, J u l y 20 —The St. Louis people have succeoded in ob ta in ing the acceptance of Pres ident Cleveland of an in-vitation to visit t h a t c i ty du r ing their Octolier festivities. A t 12 o'clock Monday the delega-tion called a t the Whi t e House and there wore received by tho pres ident and prcsenteJ their desires. Mayor F ranc i s mak ing the ad-dress. Ho told tho president t h a t St. Louis with a united voice had resolved to repeat tho inv i ta t ion which cer ta in occurrences had constrained him to once decline, a n d tha t the invi tat ion emana ted f r o m the governing peo-ple, nnd not f r o m any orgaui ja t ion—civi l or mil i tary, political or religious. Tho people of the west would congrega te in vast num-bers to welcome tho chiei magistrate . Tho first week in October had been designated lie-cause a t t h a t t ime the t r ade pageant , the visit of tho veiled prophet , the exjioiition and t he f a i r wcro all in progress, and tho yeo-m a n r y of tho west could with least detri-men t to their agr icu l tu r ia l interests assemble to do the president honor. If another t ime would be t te r suit him, however, bus welcome would ho none tho less genuine. Ho closed by u rg ing t he president of tho United S ta tes t o "honor us wi th your presence," and the honest, fearless man who so ably fills his high ofllce to "come nnd bo our guest ."

He then presented t he eng raved invi tat ion, which was got ten u p in highly ar t is t ic style. Tho president, in a few appropr ia te remarks , complimentod the enterpr ise of S t Louis, and declared t h a t what had happened had in no way weakened his dosire to visit t h a t ci ty. Ho accepted tho invi ta t ion conditioned on t he s t ipulat ion t h a t i t should not interfere with his previous promise to visit At lan ta . This ho had no doub t could bo a r r anged by cor-respondonce between a commi t tee of S t Louis citizens and himself. There was plenty of t ime, ami the th ing must be done.

The m a y o r suggested t h a t tho veiled prophet migh t bo induced to dolay his visit unt i l he could meot t he president , and added tha t i t was not to bo forge t ten t h a t Mrs. Clovoland was included in the invi ta t ion, to which Mr. Cleveland responded t h a t she was-not likely to p . r m i t it t o bo forgot ten . The delegation then, a f t e r extending tho invi tat ion to t he cabinet , withdrew.

The St. Louis delegation were so over joyed with the result of thoir visit to the president that they could not folicitate informal ly , bu t held a meet ing a t Wil lard ' s hotel u t night , gu ihcr ing us ear ly as 7 o'clock, and made speeches and congra tu la ted themselves unt i l a late hour. In the ubsonce of Mayor Francis , the cha i rman of the delegation, who, upon invitat ion, took dinner wi th tho president and Mrs. Clovehnid ut Oakview, John S. Moffell presided over the meeting. Ex-Lieu-t enan t Governor Campbell and S ta te Sena-tor Ueorgo A. Castleman cri l icis 'd sevorely the effor ts of Grand A r m y of tho Ilopublic leaders lo prevent tho pr- sident 's visit to St , l/Ouis. Mr. Cast leman, in crltloUiug these efforts, refer red lo "unprincipleddemagogi ios who endeavored to aid themselves by in jur -ing others, b u t who hail only affonled Mis-souri another oppor tuni ty to extend n hea r ty nnd unpar t l san invi tat ion to a wor thy chief m igistrato of tho nation. "

Numerous telegrams were sent by the dele-gation to mayors of cities of Missouri, and to others, announcing tho miqualitled success of their mission to Washington.

I t liegins to look now a s though President Cleveland will s t a r t tho la t ter pa r t ol S e p tember for an extended tour in tho nor thwest , wes- nnd south? Tho Kansas City, Mo., delegation arc exiiected here in n day or t w o with a n e labora te invi ta t ion signed by thon-sands urg ing tho president to lie present a t their national agr icu l tura l exposition this full.
