UK’s top application and project engineersABB gives you access to over 30 years experience in UK power distribution systems, with more than 60application and project engineers to help you specifyand optimise your choice of equipment.

Technical consultation services Before purchasing your electric power distributionsystem, ABB is on hand to advise on methods thatenable you to minimise your future maintenancecosts, whilst maximising system resilience. The aim is to design longevity in from the onset. Equallyimportant is helping you identify and resolve single

points of failure and upgrade/migration pathways tocater for future assets. Finally, ABB can provide youwith a discrimination study that gives reassurancethat protection devices will do their job.

Whether you are selecting intelligent relays or fuseswitches, from high resilient systems to domesticsystems, from a supermarket to an offshore platform,ABB is an authoritative source of advice.

Safety of plant and personnel is of paramountimportance to ABB, as demonstrated by its successin securing OHSA 18001 accreditation. This cultureof safety is mirrored in ABB’s approach to systemdevelopment, fully utilising arc proof and arcguarded designs.

Project management Services for electrical distribution installations involvesensuring the safe integration of all products, from avariety of suppliers, whether variable speed drives, electric motors, transformers, trunking, harmonicfilters etc. ABB’s project management skills helpensure that all products, systems and services arebrought together seamlessly.

Case study: An operator of a major UK data centreexperienced failure of a cast resin transformerduring above average temperatures and whenthe cooling load was greatest for the data centre.

Although the data centre remained operationalthrough its back-up generator, the installationwas at risk if any further failures occurred. Thegenerator was also expensive to run and so arepair to the transformer, which had not beenserviced for many years, was critical.

ABB low voltage systems’ service team wasapproached and within four hours, thetransformer had been surveyed and the decisiontaken to replace it. Within 48 hours areplacement transformer had been sourced.

Within 96 hours ABB had:

l carried out a survey and risk assessment

l written a method statement

l removed the old transformer

l delivered, installed and tested the new transformer

Installation and site testing

ABB provides comprehensive installation and sitetesting services for low and medium voltagedistribution equipment and switchgear for ABB and non-ABB products.

Access to 50 in-house service engineers locatedthroughout the UK, giving:l Complete installation and site testing services by

fully trained and certified engineers, providingexpertise to start-up equipment efficientlyfollowing customer specification

l Emphasis on health and safety throughout - alloperatives carry health and safety passports

l Trained in methodology of switchgearl Many engineers hold JIB Approved

Technician status

InstallationIntegrity of installationl Even simple tasks such as offloading equipment,

requires a meticulous planning to ensure theoperation is carried out in a safe and efficientmanner. This includes identifying a safe route plan, ensuring lifts are coordinated with other trades andthat specialist equipment is at hand.

l The quality of an installation has a direct relationon the longevity of the switchboard. Details suchas floor tolerances and board alignment; properlytensioned transport joints; sealing against vermin;and other alien substances, is essential to avoidhotspots, flashover and long term damage, whileguaranteeing the integrity of the equipment.ABB’s “Multi-Point Installation Checklist”anticipates and addresses the danger areas.

Supervisionl Whether clients choose to carry out their own

installation or not, ABB can provide a supervisorto watch over the installation of equipment and toprovide hands-on installation advice if required

Post Installation Testing l Following installation, an ABB engineer will test

the integrity of any joints disturbed duringinstallation to ensure that power can be safelyapplied to the system

Site testingSite testing proves the integrity of all interfaces withother components of the system. It often entails:l Proving the integrity of hardware and software

and the operation of all control and protectionequipment to settings provided by the client orcalculated by ABB

l Conducting integrated system tests, which provethe systems response in critical situations such asblack starts. ABB’s presence during these tests, allows its technicians to respond immediately toany possible failures throughout the entire system, thereby saving time and money, in addition toproviding a fully audited documentation trail asevidence of all test results.

Professional Start-Up ServiceFor fast, efficient start-up of a system, ABB’sProfessional Start-Up service provides certifiedengineers that guarantee a trouble free start-up byadjusting the system to achieve the maximumproduction level for the given process. ProfessionalStart-Up also includes personal instruction on thevarious functions of a system. All the start-upinformation and the optimal production parameterswill be saved should the engineer need to recall anyinformation at a later date.

Maintenance, repairs and upgrades

On completion of commissioning, your electricalsystem is at the peak of its performance. To maintainthis condition it is essential to adopt a maintenanceplan for your asset.

Even with equipment designed for low maintenance, ifit is not maintained correctly there is a potential dropin performance. Without maintenance, there is a riskof catastrophic failure, leading to a loss in productivityand potential safety issues.

ABB’s preventative and corrective maintenanceservices maximises the performance of your electricaldistribution and control system. ABB offers serviceprograms, which provide both intrusive and non-intrusive maintenance regimes. Its engineers utilise themost advanced diagnostic and repair practices toreduce mean time to repair and increase performance.

Preventative maintenance auditABB’s maintenance proposals are always based uponthe results of an extensive audit of your distributionand control systems in order to assess areas whichcould benefit from a preventative maintenanceprogramme. This ensures that the subsequent regime

is linked to the way in which your equipment is used, giving you the benefit of:l Reduced downtime leading to higher availability

and productivityl Reduced maintenance costs by scaling

maintenance activity to usagel Reduce potential for incidents by providing a safe

environment for operatorsl Annual inspections/recommendation along with

scheduled maintenance

Whether it be critical services inhospitals, essential supplies offshore or securedsupplies in data centres, regular incident testing is an essential component in creating system resilience.

Preventative maintenance programmeABB’s trained engineers will visit your site with theappropriate parts to undertake the maintenanceagainst a carefully designed plant specificmaintenance schedule.

The parts identified in the schedule are replaced andequipment is rebuilt. Equipment is reinstated intoservice if site conditions permit; all actions andmeasured signals are recorded and a report issued at the end of the visit.

SupportlineABB’s dedicated helpline gives customers access to technical advice during out of office hours. Bycontacting this number customers will speak to anengineer, who can advise on the most suitable courseof action. This dedicated helpline is available 24/7/365.

Emergency breakdown or repair servicesPart of your service agreement with ABB could be theprovision of emergency diagnostic and repair facilitiesin the event that the systems are subjected to afailure. The level of response agreed in ABB’s ServiceLevel Agreement, is determined by the nature of yourbusiness and the competency of your in-house staff.

ABB will work with you to identify the type and level ofemergency response required in your business.Response times would be agreed based on location.

Future proof solutionsl As well as providing new switchboards, including

installation and site testing, ABB also provides a range of services that help you develop your electrical distribution system as your business grows

l ABB offers advice on upgrading existingswitchboards, where shutting down switchboardsneeds meticulous planning and projectmanagement. Where the window for changeover is critical, ABB can assess the risk to your plant;consider all health and safety issues; and re-useany existing cables or other equipment – all withthe aim of minimising your downtime andmaximising your profits.
