The Third Harmonic - a Growing Problem

Today's electrical networks and plants are undermuch more stress than a decade ago. One reasonfor this is the increasing use of electric equipmentwhich generate harmonics: in particular the thirdharmonic.

This harmonic can generate exceptionally highneutral currents which can often exceed even thephase current.

Equipment that generate harmonics:

• Fluorescent lighting systems• Computers• Welding equipment• UPS• Rectifiers• TV monitors• Microwave ovens

The Third Harmonic Causes Many Problems

Problems are directly related to the harmonic content. The third harmonic found in the phase current appearsneutral thus increasing the neutral current. See illustration on the next page.

In network:

• Overheating• Increased power losses• Poor quality of electricity• Electromagnetic fields• Malfunctions in earth fault control• Failure in remote control systems

In plants:

• Malfunction in electronics• Damage to capacitors• Power losses• Increased magnetic fields• Overload in neutral conductor• Cable fires• Abnormal temperature changes and noise in

transformers• Nuisance tripping in circuit-breakers

The Solution - The Third Harmonic Filter

The third harmonics are accumulated in the neutralconductor.

ABB Control Oy has developed a filter designed toeliminate the third harmonic.During the development process, there were manyindications proving that the third harmonic had anegative effect on the network.Once the filter is installed, machine interruptionsdecrease and process reliability improves. The filter also eliminates the harmonic in phaseconductors and power consumption is smaller.

The operation principle of THF is to convert theharmonic current into harmonic voltage, whichappear between phase and neutral. In TNS-systemit also appears between neutral and earth.

application

• Increased efficiency in low voltagenetwork- Reduction in transmission losses- Increased loadability of the existing network

and switchboards- Lower temperature of cables, switchboards

and transformers- Elimination of third harmonic current in neutral

and phase conductor

• Increased efficiency in lightingappliance and pc-load- Less power or more lighting- Less maintenance- Longer life time of the lamps and capacitors

• More reliability in system- Reduced temperature of network devices- Increased maintenance intervals- Longer lifetime of the network

• Reduced Magnetic fields- The reduction of third harmonic component of

the current reduces the total magnetic field.- Picture example of the total magnetic field

spectrum typically in various locations.

TNS system

In TNS system it is advisable to install THF in transformer starpoint, see above.

It can be also installed in the neutral conductor, however the network must be a pure TNS-system. See "Third harmonic filter for distribution boards", pages 11...15.

TNC systemIn TNC system the THF filter is installed in the transformer star point. There must be noearthing between the starpoint of transformer and incoming terminal of THF filter.

Because of earthcurrent, THF filters

cannot be installed inthe PEN conductor of afour-conductor system.

Protectionunit

Protection unit, includes the filter delivery

The protection unit is always used in TNC and TNS circuits when the THFfilter is installed in the transformer star point. The unit can also be used inTNS circuits when the THF filter is installed in the neutral conductor, see"Third harmonic filter for distribution boards", pages 11...15.

The protection unit is used to protect the THF filter in main circuits in TNC-system against 50 Hz fundamental unbalance currents and 150 Hz over-currents.

The purpose of a protection unit is• to limit a 50 Hz fundamental unbalance voltage drop to desired level• to prevent overload of THF filter• to go to by-pass state in case of network or internal failure.

The THF filter types THFMNS and THFMJS include the complete delivery ofthe protection unit with the by-pass contactor. More information for protectionunit THF 1_S , see brochure THF 2 GB.

The THF filter is installed in the neutral conductor. A filter is sized according to the distribution board or the fuse, which is supplying the group. The basis of the factory dimensioning of the filter is the fact that a filter installed inthe neutral conductor bears, in addition to the 150 Hz current, a 50 Hz component which may reach 100 % ofthe phase current (fully asymmetrical load).

The basis of dimensioning: Fully asymmetrical load.

Correct installation

Incorrect installation

When the THF filter isinstalled in the neutralconductor, there can´t

be any connectionsbetween N and PE in

the loadside.

TNS systemIn TNS system the THF filter can be installed in the neutral conductor. The network must be apure TNS system. Fault current monitoring is recommended. Before the installation, the stateof TNS-system shall be verified by measuring the isolation resistance in the poles where THFis to be installed. It is advisable to install THF filter in the transformer star point even in TNS-system. In thatcase there is no 150 Hz voltage between N and PE. See installation of THF filter fortransformer circuits page 6.

Installation of THF filter for distribution boards

See page 15, parallel connection of third harmonic filters, connection examples.

Low Voltage Products 13

The function is based on measuring the PE current in pure TNS -system. The factory setting value is in therange of 4...10A and can be adjusted with the monitoring relay.

Guard unit with bypass contactor in TNS- system

THF in TNS system with guard unit

The wiring diagram of guard unit

A THF filter shall be equipped with a fault current monitoring system, calleda guard unit, an economic way to improve the protection level of thenetwork in the TNS-system. Guard unit is used for supervising the networkcondition in TNS -systems.

The function is based on measuring the PE current. In case of the PEcurrent exceeding the set level (4...10A) the guard unit gives an alarm andcloses the bypass contactor of THF. The guard unit can be used with earthleakage systems. The guard unit do not substitute the earth leakageprotection, required in certain application. The earth leakage system do notsubstitute the guard unit.

• The guard unit is used for distribution boards in TNS circuits when theTHF filter is installed in the neutral conductor, see below, REMARK.

• The guard units are available either as inbuilt in the enclosed THF filter(types THF_ V) or inbuilt in the parallel connection box THF 1BV.The bypass contactor is included in above mentioned guard units.

• The guard unit is also available as a separate type THF 1V for remotemonitoring.

• The filter shall be dimensioned for full asymmetric load, see theprevious page.
