Rolling Resistance

Car engine must overcome rolling friction to propel the vehicle forward — this requires fuel consumption

Rolling Friction Force:

frr NCF

Type of Tire Crr

Ordinary Tire ~0.015

Typical LRR Tire <0.0105

Best LRR Tire ~0.006

Facts About Tires

Vehicle manufacturers usually install

LRR tires on new vehicles to help meet

CAFÉ standards more easily

Most replacement tires are not LRR

~237 million replacements sold each year

None are labeled with any indication of their

rolling resistance coefficients

Benefits

A 10% decrease in Crr can decrease fuel consumption by 1-2%

California Energy Commission estimates total gasoline use can be reduced 1.5-4.5% if all tires in use were LRR

This can be safely implemented with current technology
