LOW POWER TECHNOLOGY: ECONOMIC SAVING STUDY The Variable Message Signs LPT (Low Power Technology) for traffic, with a low consumption architecture, have an electric consumption of 350 W, what confers them the possibility to be installed everywhere in the world by a minimum requirement of electric infrastructures and even the possibility of being supply by renewable energies. The Low Power Technology LPT installed in the Variable Message Signs suppose an important economic saving for the road networks managers, as much in power energy costs saving, as in the necessary installation and maintenance itself. To calculate the estimated saving per kilometer of providing the LPT Signs to the road infrastructures compared to the conventional dynamic signs, we base our calculations in a density of 2 signs, one in each direction, every 20 km (1) . 1. SAVING IN THE POWER ENERGY RECEIPT The 350W consumed by the Variable Message Signs LPT de Postigo in front of the 1.500W of the conventional signs provide an annual saving of 151 € (202 USD) per Kilometer of road. The calculations of the saving in the power energy receipt are the following: The annual consumption of our LPT signs: 350W x 24 hours x 365 days = 3.066kW The annual consumption of the conventional signs: 1.500W x 24 hours x 365 days = 13.140kW The Price of the kW in Spain to date of January 2013 is 0,15€ therefore the expense will be: The annual expense of our LPT signs: 3.066kW x 0,15€ = 459,90€ The annual expense of the conventional Variable Message Signs: 13.140kW x 0,15 = 1.971,00€ This annual power energy saving provide by our LPT Technology is 1.971,00-459,90 = 1.511,10 € per Panel. Considering a density of 2 Variable Message Signs (1 in each direction) every 20Km, the annual saving represents 151,11 € per road Kilometer. 2. SAVINGS IN THE SUPPLY CONNECTION TO THE ELECTRICAL NETWORK The electric single-face supply of the LPT signs, thanks to its low consumption, suppose a saving of 7.000€ (9.500 USD) per road Kilometer in the supply connection wiring, in relation to the triphase installations required by the conventional signs The conventional Variable Messaging has a consumption of 1.500W and requires a triphase supply, and the connection points to the electric network are 5Km away. Our technology LPT can be supplied by single-face thanks to its low consumption, and so the average distance to the network connection points is around 3 Km (2). The triphase supply requires a much more wires and for a longer distance what also mean bigger wear sections to avoid drops in voltage, therefore the wiring costs are much more important: Our LPT technology just need one 3x16 wire which price is 6,36€/m. Other solutions requiring three-phase supply need four 1x35 wires which price is 4,53€/m, so the total cost of 1 meter supply is 4x4,53€ = 18,11€/m The total costs of the supply connection are: For our LPT product, having the connection network point at 3Km distance: 6,36€/m x 3.000m = 19.071,43 € For the other three-phase products, having the connection network point at 5 Km distance: 18,11€/m x 5.000m = 90.571,43 € The electric wiring saving is 90.571,43€ - 19.071,43€ = 71.500,00 € per panel. Considering a density of 2 Variable Message Signs (1 in each direction) every 20Km, the saving represents 7.150,00 € per road Kilometer.

3. SAVING BY USING RENEWABLE ENERGIES The low consumption of our LPT signs makes viable its alimentation by means of solar or eolian energy. This energetic Independence allows the installation of dynamic information that to date had been dismissed because of its high infrastructure supply costs. Therefore it represents a big saving concerning the supply costs and the power energy costs.

4. MINOR MAINTENANCE COST

The reduction of the energy consumption directly entails a minor panel components warming, and therefore, a longer life stand of the LEDs and all the other electronic components, reducing the maintenance and equipment renovation costs. The annual saving per road Kilometre is 134€ (179USD)

The calculations of the maintenance savings: With our LPT technology the maintenance required is decreased of a 30%,so the annual cost would be

:3.129€ With other Technology, an average of 2 maintenance interventions are required each year, with an average

cost each one of 2.235€. In all, 2 x 2.235€ = 4.470€ every year. The annual saving of our LPT Technology is 4.470€ - 3.129€ = 1.341,00€ per panel. Considering a density of 2 Variable Message Signs (1 in each direction) every 20Km, the annual saving represents 134,10€ per road Kilometer.

The reduction of the consumption supposes an 85% less CO2 emissions to the atmosphere.
