UnderstandingFocalLengthandF/NumberVideolensescanbeclassifiedintothreecategoriesaccordingtofocallength:standard,wideangleandtelephoto.Focallengthisthedistancebetweenthecamerasen-sorandthecenterofthelens.Thegreaterthefocallength,thelargertheimagewillappear.Therefore,thegreaterthefocallength,themorethelensbecomestelephotoinapplication.

StandardLens Astandardlensdoesn’tchangethesizeoftheobjectbeingviewed.

WideAngleLens Awideanglelensprovidesawiderfieldofviewandthereforeasmallerimageoftheobjectbeingviewedthanastandardlens.

TelephotoLens Atelephotolensproducesalargerimageofadistantobject.Thelongerthefocallength,thelargertheobjectwillappear.

Thef/numberisanindicationofthebrightnessofthelens.Itisthemeasurementoftheratiobetweenthefocallengthandthediameteroftheentrancepupil(wherethelightentersthelens).Thef/numberisdirectlyproportionaltothefocallengthandinverselyproportionaltotheeffectivediameterofthelens.Itdeterminestheamountoflightreachingthecamerasensor.Thesmallerthevalue,thelargertheopeningandthebrightertheimageproducedbythelens.

HowtoDeterminetheLensFocalLengthRequiredTochoosetheproperlensforaparticularapplication,thefol-lowingfactorsmustbeconsidered:

• FieldofView-Thesizeoftheareatobeimaged.

• WorkingDistance(WD)-Distancefromthecameralenstotheobjectorareaundersurveillance.

• CCD-Thesizeofthecamera’simagesensordevice.

• Youmustbeconsistent.Ifyouaremeasuringthewidthofyourobject,thenusethehorizontalCCDspecifications,etc.Ifyouareworkingininches,thendoyourcalculationsininchesandconverttomillimetersattheend.

RelationshipBetweenAngleofViewandImageSensorSizeAnimportantfactortorememberisthatcameraswithdifferentimagesensorchipsizes(suchas1/4”,1/3”,1/2”,2/3”and1”),usingthesamefocallengthlens,willeachyieldadif-ferentfieldofview.

Lensesdesignedforalargerimagesensordevicewillworkonanew,smallersizecamera.However,ifalensdesignedforasmallerformatim-agesensordevice(i.e.1/3”)isplacedonalargerone(i.e.2/3”),theimageonthemonitorwillhavedarkcorners.

Imagesensorsizesareinaratioof1:0.69:0.5:0.38:0.25.Thismeansthata1/2”formatis50%ofa1”format,a1/2”formatis75%ofa2/3”formatanda1/3”formatis75%ofa1/2”format.
