The Canterbury Plains are the perfect horticultural environment for lavender growing, as they sit beneath the New Zealand Southern Alps where the soil is light, stony and free draining. Lavandula angustifolia shrubs thrive in the alkaline earth and this is home to NZLavender, the largest lavender farm in the country. NZLavender’s fine lavender oil has earned its position in the global market-place as a quality essential oil. Sydney Essential Oil Co. is delighted to be their official distributor for Australia and South East Asia.

Introduction of Lavender to New ZealandThe use of lavender throughout the ages has been well documented. Many civilisations utilised the flower for its medicinal and fragrance properties. It is heralded as one of the most effective essential oils in aromatherapy, due to its multi-function uses including a disinfectant, anti-inflammatory and a functional antiseptic.

Originally grown throughout Europe, the Mediterranean and North Africa, English Lavender was first introduced to New Zealand in the early part of 19th century by European settlers who were familiar with the traditional uses of the aromatic plant. Even though these first plants thrived in the cool climate conditions, commercial plantations were not considered for well over a century.

It wasn’t until the 1950’s that the majority of English cultivars were brought to the country by Christchurch botanist, Avice Hill. It was from these imported varieties that the unique Lavandula angustifolia Avice Hill species was created.

Once initial cultivation was established, the commercial lavender industry began to grow, albeit quite modestly, until the 1990’s. During this time all production was consumed by the domestic New Zealand market. In 1995, the New Zealand Lavender Growers’ Association (NZLGA) was formed, and it now holds an important role in the international lavender community as the domestic industry continues to grow.

The Inception of NZLavender NZLavender was conceived in 2000 when a retired dairy farmer and a retired veterinary surgeon sought to embark on a project >

Previous page: The unique landscape of the Canterbury Plains provides an ideal location for lavender fields. Clockwise from top: Millions of bees pollinate the lavender blossoms which helps produce a larger volume of flowers in the lead up to harvest. Flower heads are mechanically harvested in the field and collected directly into the vat for distillation. The use of specialised machinery enables NZLavender to harvest efficiently. Approximately 750 kilograms of flowers can be cut every 15 minutes.

that would have them working with the land. They wanted to produce a crop that was kind to the environment but would also assist in reducing common stresses brought on by the fast paced society in which we all live.

Lavender was the natural choice as it is an enduring plant species that produces an essential oil loved around the world. They selected the Avice Hill variety of Lavandula angustifolia for its special chemical composition and clean, fresh aroma.

NZLavender Farming and Oil ProductionCurrently, NZLavender has 110,000 individual lavender plants across an area of 35 acres. It is the largest lavender farm in the country and produces over 1 tonne of essential oil every year.

Each NZLavender plant was propagated from the original cultivar of Lavandula angustifolia Avice Hill and after a year of meticulous nurturing, they were carefully planted utilising a modified strawberry planter. The first harvest from the farm occurred 3 years after initial planting and has continued ever since.

Today, the farm is still cared for by its 2 founders. They carry out all farming tasks themselves and devote their time to maintaining the highest quality farming methods.

To ensure the plants are never damaged, all weeding between the shrubs is undertaken by hand, however a mechanical cultivator and comb harrow are employed for row weeding.

The perennial lavender lays dormant over winter, unaffected by snow that covers the Plains. In spring, new growth begins to appear and during the early summer months weather station alerts are monitored closely for warnings of imminent overnight frost, where temperatures can drop below 0°C. To protect the delicate new flower buds, a “frost buster” is tractor-towed over the lavender shrubs to act as an insulation blanket against the chill.

Another special feature of the NZLavender farm is the presence of several apiaries. They contain around 2 million honey bees that help pollinate the vast fields. This controlled pollination enables the lavender harvest to be more synchronised and produces an increased volume of flowers. And in addition to the lavender, the bees produce approximately 1500 kilograms of pure lavender honey. >

harvest

Clockwise from top: In the distillery, steam is passed through the cartridge for 20 minutes to extract the excellent quality essential oil. The steam carries the oil out of the lavender flowers and

into the condenser where the gases are cooled and revert back to water and oil. During the harvest period, NZLavender founders, Philip and Owen, check the lavender flowers each morning to

assess their maturity, as it is very important to harvest the lavender when it is at its prime.

10

The annual harvest commences in January when the purple lavender flowers are mechanically cut in the field. The machinery was originally imported from France and is specialised for lavender harvesting. It is an extremely efficient and cost saving method that requires only one operator who can collect approximately 750 kilograms of flower heads every 15 minutes.

Once the flower heads have been collected they are transported to the distillery where they are processed through a steam distillation unit and condenser in order to extract the special essential oil. Approximately 75 kilograms of plant material is required to produce 1 kilogram of essential oil.

After distillation, the spent flower heads are completely recycled as excellent garden mulch.

Low Allergen NZLavender essential oilOne of the most distinctive features of NZLavender essential oil is its unique chemical composition. It has extremely low levels of linalool and camphor when compared to other traditional lavender species, making it arguably the first truly “hypo-allergenic” lavender oil.

It offers a delicate, clean floral aroma that is quite bright and fresh. NZLavender oil is an excellent choice when developing baby products as it provides all the desirable lavender properties with the enhanced benefit of also being safe enough to use on the most sensitive skin.

In massage applications, it supports the muscular and nervous systems and can assist with minimising stress and anxiety. It is often incorporated into natural remedies to promote healthy sleeping patterns and can also help alleviate mild respiratory conditions.

Natural cosmetic formulations also benefit from the inclusion of this multipurpose essential oil. In creams, lotions and body butter the healing properties will encourage a smooth, healthy complexion whilst in gels and cleansers the skin will be refreshed and rejuvenated. 1

All SEOC’s unscented Organic Aloe Vera Bases are suitable for use as is, or may be customised to suit your requirements.

Each product has undergone rigorous stability trials, preservative efficacy testing, as well as trials with human volunteers to ensure the unscented bases (without any additions) are not only robust but also functional, high performance skincare products.

Further to this, extra trials were conducted using a variety of added aromatic and functional ingredients. Based on this, we make the following recommendations if you wish to customise these Bases.

• Add a maximum of 5% additional ingredients across the range (with the exception of the Aloe Face Serum).

• Due to the lower viscosity of the Aloe Face Serum, we only recommend additions of up to 0.3% essential oils, 2% extracts and/or 1% CO2 extracts.

• Consider further testing of pH levels and preservative efficacy after additional ingredients have been added.

• We recommend choosing bottles or tube packaging with a pump closure to maintain the integrity of the Organic Aloe Vera Bases.

And for more information on these and our entire collection of Base Products, see the SEOC 2013/14 Product Portfolio & Price List, or www.seoc.com.au, or contact our customer service team at [email protected] or on 02 9565 2828. 1
