A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR YOUNG

I need more time!

Prior to coronavirus, it was my belief that my prayer life would benefi t greatly if I just had more time. How could I possibly pray more, when my schedule was fi lled with all of these other things? My prayer life was like a goldfi sh that would grow, if only the bowl it was in was a little bit bigger.

Now it feels as though there’s an abundance of time spent at home. Unfortunately, while the depths of Netfl ix and YouTube are being plumbed, prayer remains stagnant. Why aren’t I praying more, when there’s so little else to do? The goldfi sh of my prayer life is still the same size, even though the bowl of time has been upgraded to be an aquarium.

What we often forget is that regardless of how much time we have, the natural inclination of our hearts is to fi ll that time with what we love most. Everyone is given the same number of hours in a day; there are sometimes diffi cult sacrifi ces to make in order to spend more time with God. We will face these moments with joy, or we will reason that we are too busy, too distracted, or a million other defensive words.

Perhaps the bowl that the goldfi sh of prayer is in is not made of time, but it is representative of our hearts, and it’s stuffed to the gills with all sorts of other fi sh. We aren’t just too busy, too distracted, but we choose to be too busy and too distracted in order to cover the fact that our hearts are simply not with God. But how can someone change their heart?

3

Last week we heard from Pastor Tim about these issues of the heart in relation to prayer, and he read to us from Ezekiel 36. In this passage, God addresses our heart issue and all of the idols that we’ve allowed to take up residence in them. In fact, He takes it to the next step, telling us that He will take our old hearts of stone, and give us new hearts of fl esh. He puts His Spirit in us, that we might carry out His will and live in obedience, for our sakes.

He allows our hearts to feel again, that we might love Him.

And we love Him because of Jesus. He gave it all, even scorning all distractions in light of a single-minded focus on the cross. Why? Because He loves us.

He took on our punishment for disobedience and sin, taking on an isolation we will never know, so that we might be close to Him. Why? Because He loves us.

And He was raised again, with the promise that we too will rise—that we have not only new hearts, but a new life in Him. With the Spirit in us, we are now a part of God’s family, and God loves to spend time with us, because He loves us.

May it be that in this time of isolation, you take time to talk to God and to simply tell Him you love Him. If perhaps you’re fi nding that diffi cult, ask Him to help you to love Him. He is a gracious, generous and loving Father, and He desires your heart.

And may it be that we come out of the days of coronavirus with giant goldfi shes of prayer in the tanks of our hearts.

This, then is how you should pray:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.”

BIBLE READING

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them,

“Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him,and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them,

“My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed,

“My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Matthew 26:36-39

11

When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd.

“I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”

All the people answered,

“His blood is on us and on our children!”

Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus fl ogged, and handed him over to be crucifi ed.

Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him.

“Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.

They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

Matthew 27:24-31

12

From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice,

“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”(which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”.)

When some of those standing there heard this, they said,

“He’s calling Elijah.”

Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He fi lled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. The rest said,

“Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrifi ed, and exclaimed,

“Surely he was the Son of God!”

Matthew 27:45-54

13

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the fi rst day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women,

“Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucifi ed. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet fi lled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them.

“Greetings,” he said.

They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them,

“Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Series: When You PrayTitle: ‘Your Kingdom Come’Preacher: Pastor Tim Loftis

Scripture: Matthew 6:10 & 26:36-39

SERMON NOTES

“Your Kingdom come, Your Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.”

What is Jesus showing us from this phrase of the prayer?1. A P_____________ for the E________________ of Heaven -_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. A P_______________ E_______________ of Submission -_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. A P__________ for E______________ Salvation -_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Our greatest desire should be that God’s kingdom and His will are done here on this earth in the same way it is naturally done in Heaven. That is a very sobering part of this ‘model’ prayer, surrendering to the Kingdom

purposes and the sovereign Will of our Father God.

Dearest Suburban Church family,

This is Chad, writing on behalf of Erika, Leif, Piper, Asher and Wren.

We miss you all!

Since the beginning of restrictions on life here in Thailand three weeks ago or so, we have been watching the live stream of Suburban’s services together as a family (though, not actually live - it’s a bit early for us). Since you’re all watching from home, too it feels somehow like we’re more connected. It’s really great but it also makes us pine for you all and our community in Wyndham.

Life here is probably just what you’d expect it to be: most of us are in our homes 24-7 except to go out and get food and come back. Spending time with friends who live 3 minutes away means video calling them. All four kids are studying at home using a combination of pre-printed worksheets, Google classroom, Zoom calls with their teachers and dubious help from their parents. I’m trying to keep up with all my counselling clients online from our spare bedroom and Erika - who has to shoulder the bulk of the schooling burden - is focussing her energy on not going completely crazy.

In Chiang Mai generally, things are quiet. There are still a lot of motor bikes on the roads but most of them seem to have been converted into Grab Food delivery bikes as the demand for both delivery services and new jobs shoots up.

My team at The Well has temporarily shrunk. Several of my teammates hurried back to their home countries ahead of virus restrictions. I’m still carrying a full load of clients through video calling and also trying to help The Well respond more generally to this crisis with some video and webinar content about how to stay emotionally healthy during these weird times.

It’s been kind of amazing to me how well video counselling is going. To my surprise, people are expressing gratitude for our times together and telling me how much the sessions seem to help even with glitchy audio and my face getting frozen in odd, un-therapeutic expressions. I can really feel God’s grace over this work right now.

Erika has not found these days easy. It’s been extremely challenging to keep four sometimes-crying, often-distracted-and-distracting-each-other, frequently-needing-tech-support and stir-crazy plates spinning at once all morning, every day. I’m working less than usual in order to help out and we are beginning to discover some rhythms and rituals that work for us (for example, our daily “board meetings” at 10:30am when everyone stops what they’re doing and the “chairman” makes everyone a cup of tea so we can sit together and chat about how the day’s coming along so far - we take turns being the chairman of the board - except Wren, who preferred to be known as the “Sheriff”). Another giant blessing is the quiet little neighbourhood we live in where our kids can still ride bikes or look for snakes without really getting into anyone else’s space and play with our little neighbour who has been a loved and noisy part of our family since we arrived here.

17

This coming week will be a week of holidays for us. It is Songkran (the Thai New Year) and, even though the government has offi cially postponed Songkran until some undisclosed date in the future, we’re still stopping work and school and, hopefully, just enjoying being together.

We are praying during these times for any of you that have lost work, for those of you that are vulnerable to this disease and for all of you that feel unsafe or lonely. Please pray with us for the many people here who have been hit hard by this catastrophe. Erika is working to make masks for people who can’t afford them and we have also been contributing to the relief food distribution at our church as well as trying to support friends here who are particularly struggling. We’ll keep looking for other ways we can be a small help here and keep you posted.

Remember that the one who comes from above is above all….the Father…has placed everything in his hands (John 3:31,35). Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace, and may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way.

Love, Chad, Erika, Leif, Piper, Asher and Wren

18

The one who comes from above is above all;the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth.

The one who comes from heaven is above all.He testifi es to what he has seen and heard,

but no one accepts his testimony.Whoever has accepted it has certifi ed that God is truthful. For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God,

for God gives the Spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.

John 3:31-35
