In the story of The Good Samaritan, found in Luke 10, Jesus faces some tough questions. A lawyer wants to know how to inherit eternal life. Jesus reminds him of the command to “Love the Lord your God…and your neighbor as yourself.” This sounds simple enough. However, the lawyer wants to justify himself and so he asks Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Then, Jesus tells the story of The Good Samaritan who shows mercy and compassion to a most unlikely neighbor found on the side of the road.

Who is your neighbor? When people see you and see how you live, do they see a neighbor? Life can get messy and difficult. People who are very different from us can often turn out to be the very neighbors Jesus is

asking us to care for. We might struggle to find anything in common, but when we put our hearts and hands to work for the sake of others, we are showing the kind of mercy and compassion Jesus speaks of here in Luke 10.

Our hands have a way of talking to others about who we are. Through our acts of mercy, compassion and love, we become the hands of Christ to others. Hands folded in prayer teach others about faithfulness and trust. Hands that are at work creating or crafting gifts for others demon-strate generosity. Hands that get messy cooking, cleaning and caring for others reveal the same kind of compassion and mercy that was shown by the Samaritan as he went out of his way to care for a battered and broken stranger lying on the side of the road.

... “Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor

to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”

He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus

said to him, “Go and do likewise.” – Luke 10:36-37

5

We don’t always get to choose the people who cross our paths. God quite often surprises us by placing us in situa-tions with people we don’t even like. This was true for the Good Samaritan, who was among the most hated of all people in that region. It was much more likely that a priest or a Levite would stop to care for someone who had been robbed, beaten and left lying on the side of the road to Jeri-cho. But, in Jesus’ parable, the priest and Levite could not be bothered with such things. It was a Samaritan who stopped and took pity on the man by binding his wounds and making sure he was well cared-for.

Our hands say many things about us. They give tell-tale signs of what a person does with their time, how they make a living and even how many years of life one has lived. In what ways might your hands speak to others? How do you use them? How are other lives affected by your hands?

Knowing that God holds us in the palm of His hand, we can boldly put our hearts and hands to work for the sake of oth-ers and for the sake of Jesus Christ.

See you in church!

Pastor Dawn

Many of us have discovered how helpful automatic elec-tronic payments can be for those really important commit-ments we don’t want to forget – the mortgage, insurance, utilities, etc.

Our gifts to the Church are also really important matters which could be budgeted and scheduled in this way. Our donations are a response to God’s blessings, and fund the ministry of the Church in our congregation and throughout the world. Automatic electronic giving assures that our support of the church continues even when we are vacationing, home sick, or snow-bound.

Online Giving—Recognizing that some of us prefer to

use our credit card for most transactions, the Stewardship Committee is encouraging you to use your smartphone to scan this QR code which will take you directly to the church website christinslay-ton.weebly.com. You will be able to quickly add your personal information on this secure site.

Automatic Giving—Another option for automatic giving

is to withdraw your donation directly from either your check-ing or savings account. You can choose to have your do-nation taken out either on the 15th, or on the last day of the month, or at both times. Forms are available on the shelf in the narthex or on our website. Once you have completed the form, please return it to the church office.

IRA Distributions—If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can

make "qualified charitable distributions" to the church and not include the IRA distribution as part of your taxable in-come. This can help people make direct gifts to ministry and save taxes! Could this help you? For more details talk to your tax person, or call Amy Bigot, Regional Gift Planner with the ELCA at 763-443-3750 or email at [email protected] There is no charge for her service.

Radio Broadcast Ministry

Thank you to everyone who has supported our Radio Broadcast Ministry in 2016. Checks ($65) can be made out to Christ Lutheran with “Radio Broadcast” in the memo or you can pay online by visiting our website. March 19 and April 2 are the next dates available.

Leadership Retreat February 26

All congregational officers and all people serving on our various ministry boards are urged to attend our annual “retreat” on Sunday, February 26

th, beginning at 1:30 PM in

the Chapel Lounge. It’s an important time for getting ac-quainted with one another, getting oriented to how the boards undergird our ministry at Christ Lutheran, and set-ting some goals for the year. The Congregation Council—our officers and a representative from each Ministry Board—will have the February meeting starting about 2:45 PM. Please plan to attend as we get the new year off to a good start!

Weather Policy

When school is let out early because of stormy weather, we will automatically cancel after-school and evening events that night. We will rarely (almost never?) cancel Sunday morning worship, as people appreciate the radio broadcast even more in stormy weather. Sunday School may be cancelled, however, as may Saturday evening worship. Listen to KJOE Radio for news of storm-related cancellations, or check the “Slayton Christ Lutheran Church” Facebook page. Always, of course, use your own judgment about whether or not it is safe to go out on stormy days.

Thank You, Thrivent Members!

We received the following note from Thrivent:

We’re excited to share that in 2016 over 335,000 Thrivent members chose to direct Choice Dollars® to more than 32,000 churches, schools and other nonprofits, including Christ Lutheran Church, through Thrivent Choice®. This life, we are on our way~ “This life, therefore, is not godliness but the process of becoming godly, not health but getting well, not being but becoming, not rest but exercise. We are not now what we shall be, but we are on the way.”

~Martin Luther Thanks to Mark Boerboom for sharing information on exercise and how valuable it is for us as we are “on the way” in this life—doing our best for ourselves and for others. We all learned something. FYI, some insur-ance policies pay for your time at the fitness center, so check out your policy. P

The Worship & Evangelism Committee is in need of updating the church’s time & talent list. We ask that all capable parish-ioners prayerfully consider committing to one or more of the following duties listed on the back of this page. Our list has become quite limited, but with many volunteers, each person would only need to do these duties a few times per year.

Training is available if you aren’t sure what to do for specific positions. Our parish has been blessed with many new mem-bers. This is a great way to become involved!

We ask that all members fill out the survey, and return it to the church office, whether you are currently on the time and talent list or not. This will give us an opportunity to fully update the entire list. You can use the form on the next page, print your own from our website (on the News & Calendar page), or even find a copy in our pews.

Each of these positions play an important role in the wonderful church services we have each weekend. Please consider sharing your time and talent with your parish.

In Christ, The Worship & Evangelism Committee
