The three South African models of the moment show off designs by incandescent home-grown designers in our
exclusive New York cover shoot. Marie Claire editor Aspasia Karras goes behind the scenes
Photographs Daniella Midenge
‘We are doing it for our mothers.’ This is the general consensus among the impossibly beautiful and otherworldly creatures who kindly agreed to grace Marie Claire’s cover this month – and pose for an exclusive fashion
shoot in New York to celebrate two red-hot South African designers while they were at it.
The three beauties, Behati Prinsloo, Candice Swanepoel and Heidi Verster, are in demand in the fashion capitals of the world, and Black Coffee and Loin Cloth & Ashes, the sartorial stars on the ramp at the Arise African Fashion Collective show at New York

Age 21Appeared on the coversof Greek Vogue and Ocean Drive; campaigns for Nike, Diesel and Guess; walked for Tommy Hilfi ger, Dolce& Gabbana, Sass & Bide and Diane von FurstenbergDiscovered ‘When I was 16, shopping at a fl ea market.’Early days ‘I went straight
to Europe and I cried all the time. When I was very sad my mom would come over.’Career highlight ‘Being a Victoria’s Secret Angel. And the 20-page French Vogue shoot with Bruce Weber and Brooke Shields. It was amazing: we were undercover policewomen.’Advice ‘Just be yourself, that’s the most important thing.
It’s a lonely business, so be prepared to be lonely. And be nice to everyone; you never know where that assistant will be next year.’Relationships ‘It’s not easy, but I have a boyfriend who is also a model, so we understand the pressures of our jobs.’Dream ‘To live in a house near a beach somewhere.’

Age 23Appeared on the cover of French and The Block; campaigns for Tommy Hilfi ger, Diesel, Benetton, Mavi Jeans, Nitya, Saks Fifth Avenue, Emporio Armani fragrance; walked for Ellen Tracy, Gilles Rosier, Issey Miyake, Alexander Wang; selected for a new Dolce & Gabbana campaign by Steven Klein Discovered ‘In Port Elizabeth, my home town.’Early days ‘My parents insisted I fi nish school before leaving for New York at 18, so I only worked in Cape Town during high school.’Highlights ‘Shooting with Paolo Roversi, and for French Vogue and Dazed and Confused. Also, my friend Azzedine Alaïa designed my wedding dress – he has so much talent and is so modest.’Advice ‘Believe in yourself. There is a lot of pressure for a young model in New York, especially with diets. It’s tough for people who are insecure; others tell you what to do, and some girls survive on an apple a day. You have to be focused on what you want out of life and stay down to earth – then you will get far.’Dreams ‘To open a guesthouse in Stellenbosch after leaving the modelling world. I love wine farms.’

Age 21Appeared on the covers of Velvet and Italy’s Muse; campaigns for Adore, Chanel, Hugo Boss, Kurt Geiger, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Nina Ricci; walked for Prada, Paul Smith, Vera Wang, Versace and Missoni; ‘spokesmodel’ for Victoria Secret’s Pink sub-brandDiscovered ‘In a Cape Town Spar with my ouma and oupa when I was 16.’Early days ‘I went to London with [fellow SA model] Elbe van der Merwe and lived with two other girls – such fun.’Career highlight ‘Being a Victoria’s Secret Angel and seeing all these unbelievable places with the company – they really treat you like family.’Advice ‘Don’t start too young. In retrospect,I would never let my kid go into the industryat 16. You need a strong personality and values. This industry makes you old before your time, but also very independent.’ Dream ‘I would love to buy an island, away from everything, and to continue designing. I have just done a Victoria’s Secret bikini range – it features a tiger design on the bum.’
