Age is no barrier on the Internet

The older generation is keeping up, they are “Tuned in and Switched on” right into their 70’s and rightly so becausemany still have the energy and enthusiasm to carry on.

Minister for Pensions, Baroness Ros Altmann, said: “For years I have championed the value of businesses hiringolder workers and it’s excellent that the number of them in employment, including older women, is now at a recordhigh.

“It’s clear employers are changing their attitude to older workers and taking advantage of the excellent skills andexperience that they can bring to the workplace.

The workplace is changing and older people face the challenge of “keeping up” with the overwhelming advances intechnology. Gone are the days of paper and pencil, it’s all about touch screens and webinars.

A couple of major barriers to the Older generation is thephysical and cognitive difficulties, people who sufferarthritis, memory loss and deteriorating eyesight find it verychallenging.

A study from London School of Economics (PSSRU dept)identified these issues:

1. A perception that information and communicationtechnology is expensive.

2. Poor Access to adequate broadband and unreliableconnections in areas populated by older people.

3. Concerns about loss of privacy, fraud and identity theft.

4. Lower skill levels due to older adults having left theworkforce before, or just around, the time that ICT wasbecoming mainstream.

“Overall, the evidence suggests that older adults are deeplyambivalent towards ICT and reluctant to let it encroach toomuch on their daily lives,”

It appears that evidence is mixed with some users gaining a sense of achievement and accomplishment whilst otherhave little or no improvement in well-being.

What is evident is that we need action by the government and the public sector to support those that want toembrace the digital world in order to keep them in employment for as long as they want to be there.

Like it or loathe it, we run our business and personal lives Online and getting access to most services requires theInternet so supporting the Older generation is more important than ever.

Boomers are more active and healthier than prior generations and if they are happy to continue working in a jobthey enjoy then why give it up?Medical advances have ensured that we are living longer but Boomers may have ignored the basics – have they themoney for healthcare and living costs way into the future? The single biggest reason cited by nearlyevery study mentioned in the media todayfor not retiring is the lack of cash. Therehave been numerous Pension fundscandals, financial downturns meaningstrapped for cash people are contributingless into their pension pots. This coupledwith the desire to continue travelling andliving the good life has kept the Boomerslocked to their desks. The following websites may help youfind out if you have enough money toRetire (should you want to):MoneysavingexpertPensionwiseSagagov.uk If you have “lost” a Pension or have noidea where to start then try theGovernment Pension Trace service – butbeware you may have retired by the timethey get back to you!
