Benedicti militantibus, in quo suntomni stu dio disposita Officia Sanctorum, ut nihil ampliusdesiderandum supersit. In quattuor Anni Tempora divisum. In 4vol umes. Venetiis, Ex Typographia Balleoniana, 1744: A Ben -edic tine bre viary, each of its four vol umes be ing de voted to onesea son of the Church’s li tur gi cal year. Each vol ume in full ma rooncalf, richly stamped in gilt, in the or nate de sign known as ‘fan’ de -sign. The spines are raised in com part ments, dec o rated in gilt, mar -bled endpapers; two of the vol umes have two or nate brass claspseach, and two have one each. All the edges are gilt. Printed in redand black, with en graved plates. Both text and bind ings in verygood con di tion. The bind ing seems con tem po rary with pub li ca -tion. How ever there are a num ber of pages from a later date in -serted into the text, e.g. a 24 page re vi sion of 1863 for the Feast on

8 De cem ber of the Im mac u late Con cep tion. It seems likely/pos si -ble that the four vol umes were disbound at that time and re bound in the same bind ings with the re vised texts in serted. One of the in ser -tions is dated 1751, so that it seems likely that the first bind ing wasnot done till then. Also in ter leaved through out the text are a num -ber of small en graved sheets, con tain ing im ages of saints andprayers (i.e. in mod ern par lance, ‘holy cards’). The text on someof these is Por tu guese and on one it is Ger man. Hence the bookwas a work ing bre viary and very likely used out side It aly, its coun -try of or i gin.. $4850
