Thailands capital city is Bangkok. The city is enriched with abundant nightlight, history and culture. These characteristics make this City of Angel a fascinating travel destination, not only for both local and interna-tional tourists, but also an economical destination for business investors. This thesis will transform an inef-ficient local museum into a hotel and spa, supporting the demand of potential users as well as promoting Thai history and culture. The site is located at Rattanakosin Island, the heart of Bangkok, which has significant val-ues in culture and history of Thailand. The surrounding communities and the historical landmarks around the area attract millions of tourists throughout the year, making the increasing demand of new hospitality busi-nesses. Furthermore, ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which will begin its vision in 2015, has been pro-moted with the aim of reducing the economic and de-velopment gap between ASEAN member countries. As a consequence, Bangkok, the capital, will rapidly gain a number of visitors, in both cultural heritage tourism and business investment. Communities surrounding Rat-tanakisin Island present the uniqueness of Thai culture, giving the inspiration of this proposal. Moreover, the unsuccessful museum, which lost its attention shortly after the opening, offers a beautiful architecture and showcases the sense of Rattanakosin Island. These will enhance the distinctive atmosphere, style and concept of the proposal for visitors to begin their investigation of Thai culture.

In order for the hotel to accommodate the need of potential users, this hotel and spa will offer interna-tional levels of services, such as, guestrooms, spa, res-taurant and bar, coffee shop, business center, and retail space. The public functions such as spa, restaurant and bar are envisioned to be the new hot spots in town, generating an improvement not only to the hotel itself, but also the surrounding area as well. In conclusion, the thesis will retrieve important values of an inefficient museum and the surrounding context, added together with world-class amenities. This hotel and spa will not only be a new destination, but also demonstrate a unique environment, which will attract both local and international visitors.

ClimateThe climate of Bangkok can be divided into three sea-sons, which are hot, rainy and cool seasons. The period between November and February is the driest period in Bangkok. The humidity levels remain high during this pe-riod. The climate in Bangkok is at its hottest from March to August, while the rainy season occurs between June and October. At this time of the year the monsoon on the west coast brings a fairly steady season of continual rain, short spells of rainy weather, with frequent after-noon showers, and spells of thunder at times.

    BUILDING ANALYSIS

There are four main reasons why The designer chose this building.First, there are three buildings in this area, which consist of a museum (This building used to be the Ministry of Commerce.) or (Building A), a coffee shop (Building B), and an office (Building C). It is not financial-ly viable in its current status and it tends to be closed. Second, the zoning of this site is close to the conserva-tive and historical zone which we can call as landmarks of Bangkok, Thailand. People did not give much atten-tion to the museum. People used to give an attention when it opened but that has rapidly decreased. Third, there is another museum that is not far from here and more popular. It is located in the main street and easy to reach. Finally, this location is not proper to be a mu-seum because self-directed learning centers should be located at a public center or a place which people can easily noticed.

Therefore, this area should be changed to be a busi-ness instead of knowledge learning center because cur-rently this site is more efficient to transform into Bou-tique hotel and Spa rather than museum.

There are three floors in this center building. The tradi-tional style front has a drop off which is connected by the garden to the main structure. The designer had to keep the column, pillar, and stairs in the same style, and they had to remain in the same place. The designer propose to transform this building to be a hotel, with a variety of room sizes and vacant areas to help support and welcome people to stay at the hotel which is locat-ed in the landmark area of Bangkok.

This building is 6 floors which is on the left side of build-ing A. One needs to walk out from building A into the building. Currently there is a parking area in front of the building. So, it is to be transformed into a hotel of-fice, spa, retail shops and teahouse restaurant. As the location is the landmark area of Bangkok, the designer would like to serve all the customers and tourists a mas-sage, buy some souvenirs, a choice with a variety of room styles and tea on a rooftop with a view of Bang-kok.

    CLIENT

Mr. Anant Asavabhokin is President of Land & House Public Company Limited, which has be-come the coun-trys largest housing development company in less than 10 years. He was ranked the 18th richest man in Thai by Forbes magazine with an estimated net worth of $840 million. In 1990s, Land and House had been shaping en-thralling success by adopting a new development strat-egy. As in the past most developers preferred buying large land plots and concentrating on the entire plots. Land and House was the first to acquire small and medi-um sized plots around Bangkok and suburban areas to accommodate its projects. He would like to expand his business to focus on hotels. As he was successful in fo-cusing on the small and medium sized housing business, he would like to start a new business in hotels focusing on small and medium sized also. Lotus Heritage Hotel is one of the medium sized hotels that he loves to start with. It is not only a size that he expects but the location and the concept can represent Thais tradition which he thinks will be great for both travelers and local people.

    USER PROFILE

TouristsForeign tourists traveling on trips in Thailand account for 67% of all tourists (Thai and foreign tourists) where-by the main objective of coming to tour in Bangkok is, namely, to visit, admire and study art and culture, as well as to see important historical and religious sites. On the average, most foreign tourists spend approximately three to eight days of their tour time in Bangkok before returning home or taking trips to other provinces.

Local peopleThai people generally enjoy visiting various popular sites in Bangkok where tourists from Bangkok and those who travel from other provinces can both be found. The main objective is tourism for relaxation, making merit. The types of tourist sites popularly visited are shopping facilities, such as markets or department stores, and restaurants. When the aforementioned data was analyzed, it became apparent, apart from an exhibi-tion site, the project site will become a special attrac-tion for this target group.

BusinessmenBusiness sees the advantage of liberalization which will be achieved in the formation of the Asean Economic Community (AEC). In 2015 Cambodia, Laos and Myan-mar would be the des-tination, and Maesot city in Thai-land is one of the best gateways to Myanmar. For busi-ness reasons I have to travel a lot and I have to keep

my eyes open and see different things, learn different cultures, moving forward to have the best vision for my company in the future.

    Cavallo Point

Cavallo Point Lodge is a hotel known for being a sus-tainable luxury hotel through its use of ma-terials and overall design. For both historical and contemporary lodging, the designer created four rooms into one lodge. The contemporary lodges are comprised of eco-friendly materials, recycled linen used for the carpet. This allows the hotel to sustain and maintain an equal environment from outside in. Because it is an historical lodge the building structure has been maintained as the original, but the inside has been restored for use as a modern hotel.

    DESIGN CONCEPT

Most people who come from America or Europe will not be familiar with Lotus. Lotus plays an important role in many aspects of Thai people. It is associated with Buddhism. Lotus is a tradi-tion of Buddhism, this tradition has come from the spiritual symbolism. In the mind of Buddhist, we compared the personality of people with the growth stages of lotus. Lotus grows in muddy water. When the lotus is able to come above the water, it means they are achieved. The first stage of lotus is in water it needs time to grow out above the water and sunlight to bloom. This stage reacts like a person who is unable to understand and learn new things. The second stage is to struggle and grow out from the mud. It means that a person had started to open up and learn. During the third stage, after it has already grown out of the mud, it stays under the water waiting to grow up above. This person is trying hard to understand, but has not succeeded. The fourth stage is when it finally comes up above the water. It will be able to receive sunshine and starts blooming, like a person who can understand clearly and easily. From the favor of lotus, came an inspiration in designing this hotel.

Entering the lobby, the main elements of the hotel are obvious white fiberglass curved objects, suspended along to the ceiling that guides tourists to come inside and stop at the reception area on the first floor. The designer started with the growth of the lotus as my inspiration, from the root to the blooming lotus, us-ing the stem to be a part of this idea. The lounge is in-spired from where the lotus has growth, which is mud water, when the lotus moves it will ripple in the water, so it makes a design. A sculpture, which was inspired from pet-als of the lotus flower, will be seats and din-ner tables.

More than ten-thousand of miles between the design-er and the site location, models were built to serve as physical representations. This provided the best visual understanding of the building, allowing the designer to stroll around the scaled model and understand how fulfilled the spaces.

    LANDSCAPE DESIGN

This is a part of Lotus Heritage Hotel that represents the Hotels uniqueness and telling the history of lotus. In Thailand we believe that the main purpose of lotus is traditional of Buddhism. This tradition has come from the spiritual symbol. Also, lotus is an interesting image of the citys life representing the distribution under-standing of the places, and historical sites nearby such as temples and palace. The historically rich site where Lotus Heritage Hotel is located has been taken as the desired site.

The landscape of hotel is separated into three areas, including the pathway to connect the three buildings. In front of the main building there is a roundabout with a lotus fountain that vehicles can encircle. The building is surrounded by big palm trees.

For the customers who come for a business trip, they can walk through the pathway from the main building to connect to the convention building. Along the path-way to the convention build-ing there is a swimming pool that was inspired by the blooming lotus. There is a bent sculpture that can be protection and shade from the sunlight. Behind the sculpture of the pool, there is a way to the SPA building. All the outdoor areas, have a lot of palm trees and there are shrubs all the way of the pathway. The buildings were designed and used more than a hundred years ago, that is why the buildings are unique and antique in Thai style.

The building was constructed in 2008. It consists of three main buildings under the concept of lotus flower. It is influenced by it is natural growth process, the de-signer desired to evoke the mysterious characteristics associated with the flower to become the main inspira-tions for this hotel.

The lobby is one of the public spaces that the user will encounter with the blooming sculpture when they first enter the main building. The facade of the ceiling is considered as a petal of lotus, which is in a process of growing lotus with the light-emitting diode (LED). This structure enriches the plain ceiling by adding many layers. These layers will give a feeling of the blooming lotus when they are merging. The overall environment in the lobby makes all feel comfortable when they go in the building because there are light colors, green, white, and yellow. That will give a feeling of coolness and relaxation. The reception area plays an important role with scale and proportion through using level sur-faces, as well as, materials and patterns. The reception desk is painted in white gloss fiber and together with the chandelier over the reception area the reflections create a nice and shiny room.

Lotus restaurant is located on the first floor at the main building. The restaurant offers fine dining which con-sists of international and Thai cuisines. All of the part from lotus flower has been used in this restaurant start-ing with the waiting are through the whole restaurant. The reception at the waiting area uses the lotus pod as a table. At the waiting area the user will see the decora-tion, with the leaves of lotus which are suspended from the ceiling. The design is intended to respond to the sensation of experience embodied with the building. The overall design of the restaurant is bold and calm with the use of lotus flower and leaves. To make the restaurant a more dramatic experience for customers, besides from the table dinner, the designer creates a ta-ble for two which is covered with the blooming lotus to make it more private. On the wall there is a lotus-lined pattern which can be seen when the light is turned on.

    100

There are four different room options, suite, standard, loft, and standard with modernity. They are divided into two buildings. However, each room is still different in terms of the use and ma-terial.

The first building or main building has suite and standard rooms. The suite comes with an adjoining liv-ing area and dining area for greater comfort. There is a scene, engraved as a lotus to separate between pri-vate bedrom and living room. The LED light from the bedroom can be reflected through the engraving scene to the living room, vice versa the LED light or any light from the living room can also reflect through to the bedroom. Thus, the user does not need to open the light from both sides and it will give a romantic feeling. A bedroom is designed as a high ceiling to make the user feel comfortable with a king size bedroom and the head board is designed from the lotus petal. There are two additional pendant lights hanging from the ceiling under the concept of lotuss stem. The A flat screen TV in each room with cable and in-suite movies means that everyone can watch what they like. Other ameni-ties include wet bar, refrigerator, microwave and Wi-Fi. Youll also have a coffeemaker, iron with board and hair dryer for added conven-ience. So make yourself right at home. The dining area comprises a two to four-person table and chairs.

In the main building it has a standard room available. It is designed as normal and simple. There are beige and white tones, with four LED lights from the ceiling and two bed lights with a de-sign of the petal of lotus. At the headboard there is a translucent lotus image dec-oration. On the partition at the back of the television there is a lining with green and with a little curve out and edge. This was inspired by the folding of the petal of lotus.

As the SPA room should be the best place to do a mas-sage to help relax after a tired day or for people who need to relax and get fresh. White and beige are the main colors of this room. The concept in the SPA room is inspired by the growth of lotus in the third step, which is under the water surface. Therefore, there is not much light in this room. The ceiling is designed from the petal of lotus that dovetails together and there is a little hole which the light can break through, that is the place where the brightness comes from.

The facial room is serving for another kind of SPA. The white wave wall and the placement of the LED lighting strip from the ceiling down to the floor create illusionary perspective in the facial room.

The manicure and pedicure room is focused on the spa chair. The chairs backrest lining with the cushion and the chair that is designed to let the user feel com-fortable with the curve for the armrest. The white fiber glass of the walls also have a petal of lotus which is re-flected from the ceiling.

Loft is the last type of room option in the second building. There are circular stairs in this room type to connect between bedroom and living room. The first floor of the loft consists of table with two chairs, couch, and flat television. The floor is covered with light wood and uses the white fiberglass tile panels lit with artificial lighting to make it look modern. There is a single bed and the LED light which hides behind the lotus sculpture over the bed head.

  • My name is Sirimon Banchoetsakun. I was born in Bang-

kok, Thailand. Bangkok is a small and beautiful city it

is a capital city which also can be a good commercial

and residential area. My family owns a business about

Architecture and Interior Design. My fathers business

deals with construction. Most of my fathers works are

concerned with palaces and temples. He takes respon-

sibility for Thai paintings both for interior, exterior de-

sign of many palaces and temples in Thailand. I can say I

was born in the architecture and design field. My family

background is one of the reasons that made me pursue

a career in architecture. I graduated from the faculty of

    Architecture in Urban-Planning, Thammasat University.

When I was in my third year, I had to do an internship.

I had a chance to work at the Phuket Municipality. My

responsibilities were to survey Phuket city and analyze

the problem of the city, rearrange the area of transpor-

tation, and develop the overlapping territorial claims

area. In the meantime, I had to do internship at my fa-

thers company. My duties were to survey temples for

renovation, develop blueprints using AutoCAD, and de-

sign temple grounds. After I graduated with a bachelor

degree in Urban-Planning and gained more experience,

I realized that it would be great if I can learn new things

in the same field. Therefore, I decided to pursue a major

in Interior Architecture and Design at Academy of Art

University, where I have learnt several things related to

design, and I can learn knowledge from professionals to

become an expert interior designer. I have background

from urban planning and I have absorbed two cultures.

I would like to work on the project, which can help sus-

tainability, and I would like to have my own firm. Before

that can come true I plan to work at least two years to

    gain more experience.
