Teaching Reading in the Target Language- Spanish !!Students learn the target vocabulary (TL) and phrases while learning to read in a methodical multi-stage and multi

sensory process. When the goals are learning new vocabulary, retaining it, oral reading fluency and comprehension

there is no such thing as reading a TL selection once or twice and moving on. Intense pre-reading presentation of

new vocabulary and practice activities comes before any text reading is done. Then reading with supportive

techniques and cues follows, and finally post-reading activities cap it off. After all of this students learn, retain, and

use the Spanish from the reading unit.!! Learning and Using New Vocabulary + Reading Comprehension

A Recipe for Success !Pre-Reading Vocabulary Presentation!!1. Present all of the new vocabulary, verbs and even conversational phrases with images in a slide-show or with old-

school paper visuals. !2. Provide short, oral descriptions of each item in Spanish that is at least 85% comprehensible to the students.!3. Use dramatic, physical gestures to demonstrate the verbs along with an illustrated slide.!4. Repeat, repeat, repeat.!!!Vocabulary Practice Activities!!• Orchestrate receptive activities in which the students don’t have to say or produce the Spanish vocabulary. !• They can indicate pictures to oral descriptions, they can point to pictures, lift pictures up high. !• They can categorize pictures in simple categories: comida, personas, decoraciones navidenas, regalos, etc.!• Games with picture vocabulary cards- matching, tic tac toe with 9 picture cards, bingo, memory with 2 sets of cards

for a group of 4 students.!• Partner Charade Vocabulary. No ingles! Partners take turns doing verb-charades and the other partner needs to

say the correct verb in Spanish. Then, partners can do the same when they start with saying the Spanish verb.!!!Reading the Selection!!1. The teacher reads the story slowly, with dramatic expression and even some charades. !2. For grades 2-6 Students must read, or try to read silently along with the teacher.!3. For grades 2/3-6 Read Aloud Partners- Partner A reads the first sentence or two. Partner B then does the same.

This way everybody reads.!4. Voice Recorded Selection. If created, then ideal to play as students read silently again
