Introduction:
Emergencyactionplansarenecessarytoensurethatappropriatestrategiesandvenuespecificproceduresarefollowedduringatimeofcrisis.Whenimmediateactionistakenandproceduresarefollowed,thebestpossiblecarecanbegiventotheperson(s)inneedofmedicalassistance.
Itisthedutyoftheathleticdepartmentaswellasthesportsmedicineteamtocreateandimplementanemergencyactionplanforallathleticeventsoncampus.Athleticdepartmentadministratorsandstaff,coaches,andthesportsmedicineteammuststayeducatedandpreparedforcrisesinordertoavoidquestionsfromthepublicandotheroutsidersonthequalificationsofthoseinvolvedandtheprotocolsfollowed.Stayingpreparedbeginswiththeformulationoftheemergencyplan,organizingpropercoverageofevents,replacingexpiredemergencyequipmentandsupplies,properlyutilizingallpersonnelinvolved,andcontinuingeducationthroughoutthedepartment.Throughcarefulpre-participationexams,sufficientmedicalcoverage,andsafepracticeandtrainingtechniques,potentialemergenciesmaybeaverted.Evenwiththeproperstepsforpreventionandsafetytaken,accidentsandinjuriesareaninherentpartofsportandshouldnotbetakenlightly.
