ENGLISH 9AB(Annual course – grade 9)English Learners may substitute ESL 3 and ESL 4 for English 9A and English 9B.Available as an Honors course. Available as a Sheltered course.The major purpose of this course is to provide a balanced language arts program which provides students with opportunities to move from the interpretation of a text to meaningful connections between the text and their experiences through a series of language arts activities that will enable them to listen, speak, think, and write about literature. The thematic framework provides an opportunity for students to use skills to explore ideas and values, representing many perspectives and diverse styles, cultures, and attitudes.

ENGLISH 10AB(Annual course – grade 10)Available as an Honors course. Available as a Sheltered course.The major purpose of this course is to provide a balanced language arts program that explores literary themes and genres. A series of language activities will enable students to listen, speak, think, and write about literature and connect literature to their own experiences. EXPOSITORY COMPOSITION(Semester course – grade 12)Available as a Sheltered course.The major purpose of this course is to provide experiences in writing that are characterized by logical, coherent organization, clarity of expression, and suitability in style, usage, and the conventions of writing. The student is required to read closely (essays, biographies, critiques, précis, and news and magazine articles) for literal and implied meaning and to demonstrate through speech and writing and understanding of the text. Although emphasis is on exposition and the essential skills of editing, the course provides some practice in other domains of writing.

MODERN LITERATURE(Semester course – grade 12)Available as a Sheltered course.The major purpose of this course is to study significant works of the 20th century literacy movements from four or more cultures. The course includes selected examples from the literary genres and the mass media and is designed to increase knowledge and understanding of people of the world and to develop judgment and selectivity in reading.

AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION AB(Annual course – grade 11)The major purpose of this course is to engage students in becoming skill readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. The student is required to read and analyze works of literary merit to examine how stylistic effects are achieved by writers’ linguistic choices.

AP ENGLISH LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION AB(Annual course – grade 12)The major purpose of this course develops students’ ability to read and use language with insight and precision on subjects that challenge thought. The course develops comprehension of literary forms and content through reading, discussion, and composition. Works of recognized literary merit provide a center for studies of theme, figurative language, literary conventions, and cultural values.

ADVANCED COMPOSITION(Semester course – grade 12)Available as an Honors course.The major purpose of this course is to provide practice in different forms of exposition and various ways of presenting a subject through limiting the subject, constructing a controlling idea arranging ideas logically, and developing a theme adequately. Content includes close and analytical reading of significant literature (essays, biographies, critiques, précis, and news and magazine articles) that demands high-level thinking skills and serves as a model of effective style and diction. Adherence to accepted English usage in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and syntax is required.

CREATIVE WRITING(Semester course – grades 11- 12)May be taken as the 12th grade English elective course.The major purpose of this course is to provide opportunities to develop, extend, and refine skills of written expression through the instruction and practice in various literary forms, including the prose sketch, short story, essay, dramatic monologue, and poetry. The content includes parallel readings in major genres, individual and group evaluation, and exercises in observing, analyzing, and organizing for the effective expression of ideas and emotions. The individual student undertakes individual writing projects in prose and verse.

WORLD LITERATURE(Semester course – grades 11 – 12)May be taken as the 12th grade English elective course.The major purpose of this course is to examine aspects of the epic, characteristic verse forms, prose narrative, and drama through representative works from at least three national literatures in addition to Greek and Roman literature. Consideration is given to expressed values, ideas, and ideals both similar to and different from our own and to the literary quality of the work.

JOURNALISM 1AB(Annual course – grades 9 – 12)May be taken as the 12th grade English elective course.The major purpose of this course is to offer instruction in the writing of news, features, editorials, and critical reviews. Content includes the history of journalism, the study of current newspapers and magazines, and criteria for recognizing sound journalistic practices. The student gains practice in interviewing and reporting interviews, copyreading, headline writing, page makeup, proofreading, typography, and print shop methods.

JOURNALISM 2AB(Annual course – grades 10 – 12. Prerequisite: Journalism 1AB)May be taken as the 12th grade English elective course.This course continues the major purpose of Journalism 1AB by offering advanced instruction in the writing of news, features, editorials, and critical reviews. Content includes all areas listed under Journalism 1AB.

FILM, THE INTEGRATED ART(Semester course – grades 9 – 12)The major purpose of this course is to provide studies that focus on the relationship of the film to literature, history, art, philosophy, and music. The course includes a focus on creative expression, the structure of films, and audience identification as reflected in a variety of films. Students examine literary works as film sources and compare the different means of expression used in the two media with special attention to the creative and technical elements germane to visual communication on film. Another important emphasis is on music and its relationship to a film’s power and readings in film-related subjects, including art and philosophy which gives students an opportunity to use and expand their increasing knowledge of film expression.

RADIO, TELEVISION AND MOTION PICTURE PRODUCTION AB(Semester or Annual course – grades 9 – 12)The major purpose of this course is to study the techniques of radio, television, and film reporting and production. Instruction includes consideration of the history of mass media, their technology and art, and their effect on the family and world affairs. Students are provided opportunities to write, act, announce, direct, and produce in various media.

CINEMA AB(Annual course – grades 9 – 12)The major purpose of this course is to study the motion picture, selected television productions, and radio programs as literary genres. The course involves students in analysis of the genres and provides opportunities to write, direct, design and film or tape original works.

HUMANITIES AB(Annual course – grades 10 – 12)The major purpose of this course is to provide a study of basic patterns of civilization as expressed thorough literature, history, art, music, law, politics, religion, and philosophy. The content includes a survey of significant developments in the search for order and self-definition within selected cultures from ancient civilizations to the present. Literary and specialized works are examined for the ideas expressed and the artistry in expression. The course requires practices in structured writing and oral discussions and critical and creative responses to reading art, and music.

ESSENTIAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS(Semester course – grade 11)The major emphasis of this course is to provide instruction that enables students to meet or exceed language arts standards and apply their competencies in a wide range of contexts.

SPEECH AB(Semester or Annual course – grades 10 – 12)May be taken as the 12th grade English elective course.The major purpose of this course is to offer instruction in the fundamentals of effective oral delivery, including body control, use of voice and diction, and analysis of audience. Instruction stresses organization, selection, and arrangement of material and use of transitions and rhetorical effects in making brief speeches to inform, persuade, or entertain.

ADVANCED SPEECH(Semester course – grades 10 – 12)The major purpose of this course is to provide advanced training in the skills of debate; analysis of social, economic and scientific problems; logical and clear thinking; and use of the rules of evidence, types of support, literary style, rhetorical devices, and advanced research. The student gains experience in parliamentary, persuasive, and game debate as well as gaining practice in research, organization, and delivery.

PLAY PRODUCTION AB(Annual course – grades 10 – 12)The course may be repeated for credit.May be taken as the 12th grade English elective course.Fulfills Visual and Performing arts requirement for high school graduation and CSU/UC admission.The major purpose of this course is to provide for the continued growth and development of the students’ acting and technical skill through studying and producing a three-act play or similar full-length production for public performance. LAPL 1/LAPL 2/LAPL 3/LAPL 4(Semester courses – grades 9 – 12)This course is available to ESL students who have opted for the Waiver to Basic ELD program.The major emphasis of these courses is to establish oral primary language skills through comprehension activities and then to develop literacy and written skills in the primary language.

ESL INTRO A/ESL INTRO B(Semester courses – grades 9 – 12)The major emphasis of these courses is to meet the communication needs of students learning English for the first time and for those whose proficiency is insufficient for enrollment at the ESL 1 level. Listening comprehension, speaking, and composition skills through a combination of appropriate teaching methods and techniques are emphasized.

ESL BEGINNING 1A/ESL BEGINNING 1B(Double period, Semester courses – grades 9 – 12)The major emphasis of these courses is to meet the basic communication needs of students learning English and for those whose proficiency is insufficient for enrollment at the ESL 2 level. It emphasizes listening comprehension, speaking, and composition skills through a combination of appropriate teaching methods and techniques. The course includes reading as needed to nurture development of the aforementioned skills.

ESL INTERMEDIATE 2A/ESL INTERMEDIATE 2B(Double period, Semester courses – grades 9 – 12)The major emphasis of these courses is to continue to develop and expand upon the skills introduced at the ESL 1 level, with particular stress on transition from manipulation to utilization of spoken language. More complex composition forms are provided, and reading as a basis for speaking/discussion and composition activities is included.

ESL ADVANCED 3(Double period, Semester course – grades 9 – 12)Fulfills credit for English 9A.The major emphases of this course are to continue the practice of basic language skills and to effect a more sophisticated command of English in practical, communicative situations. Advanced language concepts are also taught. English language and critical thinking skills are applied to the study of media, biographical selections, and short story materials.

The content deals with drama, poetry, the novel, and career development.

MYTHOLOGY AND LEGEND(Semester course – grades 9 – 12)The major purpose of this course is to study the mythological and legendary backgrounds of modern humankind. The course acquaints students with the spiritual and ethnical meaning of myths and legends of primitive people, the Greeks and Romans, Asians, African, and Native Americans.

Students perform symbolic calculations accurately and flexibly move between symbolic, graphical and numerical representations.

GEOMETRY AB(Annual course – grades 9 – 12. Prerequisite: Algebra 1AB)Available as an Honors course. Available as a Sheltered courseThe purpose of geometry s to present geometrical concepts and patterns that are important in the development of students’ thinking and problem-solving skills. The student works with the body of geometry theorems, including theorems involving two and three dimensions. Students will develop their ability to construct formal logical arguments and proofs in geometric settings and problems.

ALGEBRA 2AB(Annual course – grades 9 – 12. Prerequisite: Geometry AB)Available as an Honors course.This discipline complements and expands the mathematical content and concepts of Algebra 1AB and Geometry. Students who master Algebra 2 will gain experience with algebraic solutions of problems in various content areas, including the solution of systems of quadratic equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, the binomial theorem, and the complex number system. Abstract thinking skills, the function concept, and the algebraic solution of problems in various contexts are emphasized.

TRIGONOMETRY AND MATH ANALYSIS AB(Semester or Annual course – grades 9 – 12. Prerequisite: Algebra 2AB or teacher recommendation)Available as an Honors course.The major purpose of Trigonometry is the thorough study of the properties of triangles and trigonometric functions and their applications. Concepts from algebra and geometry are used to extend previous work with elementary functions into a thorough study of trigonometric functions and their graphs.The purpose of Math Analysis is to develop a firm background in, and extend the understanding of precalculus topics and concepts. This discipline combines many of the trigonometric, geometric, and algebraic techniques needed to prepare students for the study of calculus and strengthens their conceptual understanding of problems and mathematical reasoning in solving problems.

Prerequisite: Trig/Math Analysis AB or teacher approval)This course is intended for students who may have a thorough knowledge of college preparatory mathematics, including algebra, integrated mathematic, axiomatic geometry, trigonometry, and analytic geometry. It is assumed, however, that they have not yet acquired a sound understanding of the theory of elementary functions.

AP STATISTICS(Annual course – grades 11 – 12. Prerequisite: Algebra 2AB or teacher approval)This discipline is an introduction to the study of probability, interpretation of data, and fundamental statistical problem solving. Mastery of this academic content will provide students with a solid foundation in probability and facility in processing statistical information.

INTERCOORDINATED SCIENCE 1AB(Annual course – grade 9 – 10)Available as a Sheltered course.This academic course provides students with an introduction to earth sciences, physics, chemistry, and biology. This comprehensive view will give the student an understanding of the concepts and principles of science and opportunities to develop laboratory, problem solving, and technological skills necessary to compete successfully in the 21st

century. This laboratory course will devote at least 40% of the class time to student-centered laboratory activities, and in small group activities related to team projects and research.

BIOLOGY AB(Annual course – grades 9 – 12)Available as an Honors course. Available as a Sheltered course.The major purpose of this laboratory-based college preparatory course is to provide understanding of the basic biological concepts: the diversity of organisms; the cell; heredity; matter, energy, and organization of living systems; evolution of living systems; physiology; the biosphere and interdependence. Focus is on active student participation in laboratory investigations and the development of critical-thinking skills.

PHYSIOLOGY AB(Annual course – grades 11 – 12. Prerequisite: Biology AB and Algebra 1AB. Chemistry AB is recommended.)Available as an Honors course.The major purpose of this academic course in the biological sciences is to study the structure and function of the human body. Laboratory investigations are designed to illustrate how the body systems maintain a homeostatic internal environment. Active student participation in laboratory investigations and the development of critical thinking skills is essential.

CHEMISTRY AB(Annual course – grades 10 – 12. Prerequisite: Algebra 1AB, Geometry AB is recommended.)Available as an Honors course. Available as a Sheltered course.Chemistry is a laboratory-based college-preparatory course. Laboratory experiments provide the empirical basis for understanding and confirming concepts. This course emphasizes discussions, activities, and laboratory exercises which promote the understanding of the behavior of matter at the macroscopic and the molecular-atomic levels. Chemical principles are introduced so students will be able to explain the composition and chemical behavior of their world.

In this course, methods used by physicists as they construct a consistent picture of the universe will be emphasized. Students will learning the principles of physics through laboratory investigations, problem solving, teacher-led demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and individual and group study.

AP BIOLOGY AB(Annual course – grades 10 – 11. Prerequisite: Honors Biology AB)A college-level course for student eligible for honors classes, AP Biology differs significantly from the usual first year high school course with respect to the kind of textbook used, range and dept of topics covered, the kind of laboratory work done, and the time and effort required of students.

AP CHEMISTRY AB(Annual course – grades 11 – 12. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2AB or higher or teacher approval)AP Chemistry is designed for students who have high ability in math and who seek training for future work in science. AP Chemistry, equivalent to a first-year college chemistry course, is for students who have successfully completed high school chemistry or its equivalent. Students study a college-level textbook and do college-level laboratory work. Emphasis is placed on chemical calculations and mathematical formulation of principles.

AP PHYSICS AB(Annual course – grades 11 – 12. Prerequisite: Trigonometry or Algebra 2AB or teacher approval)This course is designed as either a second course for those who have completed a year of physics or as a first course for high achieving students.

WORLD HISTORY, CULTURE, AND GEOGRAPHY: THE MODERN WORLD AB(Annual course – grade 10)Available as an Honors course. Available as a Sheltered course.The major purpose of this course is to examine major turning points in the shaping of the modern world, from the late 18th century to the present. The course begins with an introduction to current world issues and then continues with a focus on the expansion of the West spurred on by the Industrial Revolution, imperialism and colonization, World War I, World War II, and nationalism among modern nation states. MARCHING DYNAMICS(Semester course – grades 9 – 12)The major emphasis of this course is to provide students with a program to develop total body fitness by articulating musical performances with calisthenics, precision drill, body dynamics, and muscular development and to give students an opportunity to demonstrate skills learned while performing during various campus activities. Includes body building and development of endurance; acquisition of movement skills as they related to rhythmic musical activities; and development of a positive self-image.

ADVANCED BAND AB(Semester or Annual course – grades 9 – 12)The major emphasis of this course is on developing musicianship through the study of more difficult band music. The course develops the ability to perform on an instrument with considerable skill, accuracy, and aesthetic sensitivity, and develops skills in score reading. The course provides opportunities for increasing skill in ensemble playing, and also provides acquaintance with the standard repertory of band that is technically and qualitatively advanced.

JAZZ ENSEMBLE(Semester or Annual course – grades 9 – 12)The major emphasis of this course is on developing musicianship through the study of more difficult jazz ensemble music and other forms including improvisation and combos. The course develops the ability to perform on an instrument with considerable skill, accuracy, and aesthetic sensitivity, and develops skills in score reading. VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS: DRAMA AND THEATER ARTS

DRAMA AB(Annual course – grades 9 – 12)The major purpose of this course is to offer training in fundamental skills of the theater arts, including improvisation techniques, body control, voice, diction, pantomime, creating of character, learning of lines, projection of ideas and emotions, and preparation and acting of scenes from plays. Artist perception and creative expression are stressed.

PLAY PRODUCTION AB(Annual course – grades 10 – 12)The course may be repeated for credit.The major purpose of this course is to provide for the continued growth and development of the students’ acting and technical skill through studying and producing a three-act play or similar full-length production for public performance. THEATRE ARTS WORKSHOP AB(Semester or Annual course – grades 10 – 12)The major purpose of this course is to provide experiences fo students who are unusually gifted in the performing arts. Instruction provides for the study and performance of major works of our musical and theatrical heritage.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

A journey into foreign languages and cultures may be the one unique experience in a student’s high school career. Whether your interests in language are for travel, for broadening your own horizons, for communication, or for academic reasons, courses in French, Spanish, and Spanish for Native Speakers are offered to satisfy your special requirements.

Students enrolling in sequence courses should enroll in consecutive semesters to maintain continuity. While two years of a single foreign language are necessary to present most of the basic structure of the language, three years are strongly recommended.

Advanced Placement (AP) classes may be taken by able students in the above mentioned languages. Both language and literature examinations are available in these languages. Students are eligible to enroll in AP classes after three years of successful language study or with teacher approval.

FRENCH 1ABSPANISH 1AB(Annual course – grades 9 – 11)This is the introduction to the language, people, and culture, with a primary emphasis on speaking and listening comprehension and a secondary emphasis on reading and writing.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The intent of the physical education program at John Marshall High School is to provide for each student the opportunity to participate in a variety of enjoyable physical activities. Emphasis will be on the goals of physical fitness and the acquisition of skills and concepts which the individual can carry into later life.

ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION(Annual course – grades 9 – 12. Prerequisite: Identified as needed in the student’s IEP)This course is for students who are unable to participate in the regular physical education program. The student is provided with special activities to help improve hi/her level of fitness. Activities from the regular physical education program are provided where appropriate.

BASIC TEAM SPORTS(Semester course – grades 9 – 12)Students participate in various team sports in order to help determine which activities they are most interest in. Members of this class will also be required to meet appropriate physical fitness standards.

Includes general conditioning, rope jumping, jogging, continual rhythmical exercises, circuit training, physical fitness testing, and activities that show the relationship of exercise to health.

ADVANCED CONDITIONING(Semester course – grades 9 – 12)The major emphasis of this course is to enable students to develop their total physical fitness to the optimum. Includes body dynamics, continual rhythmical activities, developmental exercises, jogging, interval running, and circuit training activities.
