Los Angeles recorded its Major-League leading 15th shutout
last night, by virtue of Clayton Kershaw’s three-hit gem.
The Dodgers’ 89-51 record (.636) in the second half of the
season since 2013 is the best in baseball. The next closest
team is the Kansas City Royals at 89-56 (.614).
The Dodgers hold a 3.0-game lead over the Giants in the NL
West and are a season-high tying 13 games above .500 for
the second time this season (July 19, 53-40).
UTTERLY RIDICULOUS: NL MVP Clayton Kershaw recorded
his second shutout of the season and 11th of his career last night.
Kershaw has never had three in a season, but this may be the year as
he extended his scoreless innings streak to 29.0 yesterday. Kershaw
and Zack Greinke (currently 43.2 scoreless innings) join Pedro
Martinez and Derek Lowe (2002) as the only teammates with
scoreless innings streaks of 29 or greater in the same season since at
least 1961. According to Elias, Kershaw last night also became the
first pitcher since 1900 to have three consecutive starts of 10+
strikeouts, zero walks and no runs. He leads the Major Leagues with
185 punchouts.
SEEING RED: Dodger third baseman Justin Turner went 1-for-4
with a run scored last night and is now 10-for-19 in his last five games
while hitting .339 in July.
Since joining the Dodgers last season, Turner is hitting .331,
which is the best average in Major League Baseball during
that time (min. 500 AB). Jose Altuve ranks second with a
.328 average since the start of 2014.
The Dodgers lead the National League with 119 homers, 334
walks and a .329 on-base percentage.
HALL OF A WEEKEND: Congratulations to four legends on their
induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame this weekend in
Cooperstown, NY. Craig Biggio, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and
John Smoltz will take their rightful place in the annals of baseball this
Sunday. More than 50 Hall of Famers are scheduled to be in
Cooperstown to honor the Class of 2015, including Dodger greats
Sandy Koufax and Tommy Lasorda and Dodger President and CEO
Stan Kasten. The induction ceremony will be held Sunday, at 1:30
p.m. ET, and will be shown live on MLB Network and via webcast at
www.baseballhall.org.
THE WILEY VETERAN: Dodger shortstop Jimmy Rollins hit a
solo homer last night, his ninth of the season. Rollins leads active
players and ranks third all-time in hits against the Mets with 277, 12
behind Lou Brock for second.
PRIMETIME: Today, ESPN announced that the Dodgers will be
featured twice on its nationally-televised Sunday Night Baseball game
in August, Aug. 9 at Pittsburgh and Aug. 30 vs. the Cubs. The start
time for both games will shift to 8:05 p.m. ET/5:05 p.m. PT.
HOUSEKEEPING: Today, the Dodgers recalled right-handed
reliever Josh Ravin (No. 71) from Triple-A Oklahoma City and
placed Zack Greinke on the paternity list as he and wife Emily are
expecting their first child any minute. Ravin is 2-1 with a 6.43 ERA (5
ER/7.0 IP) in seven games for Los Angeles this season. This will be
Ravin’s third stint with the club this year, as he was also brought up on
June 2 and July 8. In 28 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City, Ravin
was 5-2 with a 3.18 ERA (12 ER/34.0 IP) and 47 strikeouts. He last
pitched for the OKC Dodgers on Tuesday (1.0 IP).
Dodger left-hander Ian Thomas will start for Los Angeles
tonight, after being recalled on July 22. Thomas will be the
13th pitcher to start for the Dodgers this season, their most
since 1964. Tonight will be Thomas’ first big league start.
QUALITY IS JOB ONE: The Los Angeles Dodgers and the New
York Mets have both received plenty of quality efforts from their
starting pitchers all year, including last night:

THE BIG MAN IN THE BACK: Dodger closer Kenley Jansen
leads all big league relievers with a 0.63 WHIP. Jansen has fanned 43
batters in 23.2 innings this season, averaging a whopping 16.35
strikeouts per nine innings. In his career, Jansen has averaged 14.19
Ks per nine innings which ranks third all-time, behind Aroldis
Chapman (15.43) and Craig Kimbrel (14.61).
Dodger left-handed reliever J.P. Howell leads the Major
Leagues with a 0.33 ERA (min. 20.0 IP) and has not given
up an earned run in 34 outings since April 14, a span of 26.0
innings pitched. Howell has tossed scoreless relief in 20
consecutive games (15.2 IP) since June 1.
SCOTTY VAN SLICK: The Dodgers would like to wish a very
happy 29th birthday to outfielder/first baseman Scott Van Slyke. Van
Slyke is hitting .254 with four homers, nine doubles and 18 RBI in 52
games for Los Angeles this season. Since the start of the 2013 season,
Van Slyke has averaged a homer once every 20.86 at-bats, which
ranks 14th in the National League in that time (min. 500 PA).
THE MVP WANTS YOU!: On Thursday, July 30, Clayton and
Ellen Kershaw will host the 3rd
Annual PingPong4Purpose celebrity
charity event on the field at Dodger Stadium. Proceeds will benefit
Kershaw’s Challenge, a non-profit foundation which works to
transform at-risk communities and the lives of children in L.A.,
