PASTORAL:
Please keep in your thoughts and prayers those who are sick and
recovering at this time. If you know of any person who is ill or would
particularly appreciate a visit, please contact a member of the
pastoral care team.
It is with sadness we learned of the death of Merle Seeque who passed
away peacefully on 20 August. Merle was a faithful member of our
congregation and secretary of the Women's Fellowship before she
moved to Manly and later to the Evelyn Page Retirement Home. Our
sympathies are with all of Merle's family.
Welcome back to Rowan and Margaret Smiley who have been
touring Europe—it’s great to have our wonderful organist back!
Last month the Browns Bay Presbyterian church
group visited us. It was a lovely experience to build
great network connections as well.
Women’s Fellowship:
Women's Fellowship meets Tuesday 5th
September at 10:00am followed by the
inter-church Women's Fellowship which will be
taken by the Anglican Ladies at 10:30am.
Shared Lunch:
The shared lunch on the 3rd September will
be at the home of Kim and Colin Gordon.
Service at the Heritage Rest Home:
This month’s service will be held on Tuesday
12th September at 10.30am.
WELLSFORD FOOD BANK REPORT FOR YEAR ENDING 30 JUNE 2017
This has been a busy and interesting year with great changes made in the area.
We have been in contact with the Warkworth Rotarians and Lions who have set up in the
Old Courthouse in Warkworth a Food Rescue. Deliveries from these sources to Papa’s Kitch-
en and into the Wellsford community had the effect of a drop in demand from October to
April. As supply became less the Wellsford Food Bank was in high demand. Papa’s kitchen
and the marae at Te Hana used the Food Rescue service efficiently and we have given only
one parcel to Te Hana Community since.
The Food Bank ladies have packed and distributed 177 parcels last year. 45 of these were
Christmas parcels. As Food Rescue came into the Wellsford Community we distributed an
average of 10 parcels a month. When supply dropped away we averaged 15 parcels a month.
July 2016 = 9 Parcels. June 2017 = 16 parcels.
The Food Bank has covered a wide area from Kaiwaka to Tomarata, Port Albert, Mangawhai,
Topuni, Wellsford, Wharehine.
The Food Bank operates well due to the efficiency of notification of need from CAB and or-
ganisations
And I wish to thank all those involved, those donating food, time and concern to our opera-
tion. Wellsford businesses are thanked as their help was needed and appreciated.
From: Irene Rockell, Lou Densham, Susan Tomas, Mary Partington.
The tune of this hymn needs no introduction so I thought in the light of
recent ‘hate speech’ coming via the media in recent weeks that this
hymn we have sung and will sing a few more times, goes toward ex-
pressing the kind of God whom we know shows, grace, mercy and
love that goes beyond cherry picking passages from the bible to justify
viewpoints or ideologies that marginalise and subjugate people. These
words say something toward who we are.
We long for Change (Tune; Londonderry Air)
We long for change, the wea-ry church re-new-ing;
We long for tak-ing down of ev-ery wall,
For o-pen hearts and minds to full-est view-ing
The sa-cred worth and dig-ni-ty of all.
Chorus
O Broth-er Sis-ter Spir-it, give us pow-er
To join with You to change the church to-day,
To bring new free-dom for all gifts to flow-er,
To show to all the world Your just and peace-ful way.
We long for church to give in-clu-sive bless-ing,
Af-firm-ing every gen-der, ev-ery race,
For church with o-pen doors, no one op-press-ing;
We long for free-ly flowing love and grace
Chorus
We work for change, the world-wide church re-form-ing,
The Good News bring-ing, set-ting cap-tives free;
We work for change, our words and deeds trans-form-ing,
So ev-ery-one can be all we can be.

The Monthly Message from the Minister September 2017 Over the next 4 newsletters I want to use literature
from William Loader and his explanation to the
‘Approaches to Scripture, Considering the Options’.
There is quite a diversity of opinion in our church,
local and universal. It is the local opinion that is
important to me and for our ministry within our
congregation. I want us to see this as a point of discussion and I believe one we need
to have if we are going to move ahead.
“People often disagree about how we should approach Scripture in determining right
and wrong. I shall suggest later that this is not the only reason for approaching
Scripture and, indeed, for most people of faith, not the main one. But let us begin with
some models of approaching Scripture for determining right and wrong.
Scripture - “These are the words of the Lord” to be believed and obeyed without
question
This approach asserts that the Bible is God’s word in the plain sense that all its
Instructions are to be read literally as God’s instructions. To love God with all one’s
heart means nothing less than obeying all God’s instructions
The advantage of this approach is that it seems to leave no room for
interference from taking into account other factors, but stays simply
with what it believes are God’s instructions. It can, however, lead to
inflexibility and also faces huge problems arising from the fact that
there are differences among the various writings of scripture, both
between the testaments and within each. Ironically it is the
approach best represented by those who opposed Jesus and Paul
on the grounds that neither shared this approach.
While many claim this as their stance, few hold to it consistently. Most set aside a large
number of instructions. In the Old Testament these include
stoning adulterers (Deut 22:22), not eating meat with blood in it (Lev 19:26), not eating
certain kinds of animals (Lev 11), not mixing fibres of different origins in a garment
(Lev 19:19), keeping the Sabbath, charging interest (Lev 25:27), to name only a few;
and in the New Testament: women not speaking in church (1 Tim 2:11-12), women
wearing head covering in worship (1 Cor 11), slaves obeying masters (Col 3:22),
forbidding divorce absolutely (Mark 10:11-12), to name only a few.”
Next month, Scripture – “This is the word of the Lord” to be weighed selectively.
Peace CRG, Colin.
We are in for a treat thanks to the creative spirit of ‘someone’, who will
be known as Anon. I (CRG) have been sworn to secrecy regarding
their identity. We are grateful to have original, heart felt, day to day
reflection put creatively into prose and shared in this way. Big Thanks.
Awaiting the Advent of Spring
As we eagerly wait for winter to end
The promises of Spring about to descend
Our gardens, our lawns and special places
As wet and bogged as the farmer’s races
Our firewood sheds looking rather diminished
A sign that Winter is nearly finished
But “Oh” after our coldest I remember
Is our classified “Spring” early September
Now the flower gardener’s are awaiting each blossom
As also is no doubt every opossum
The trees displaying delicate young shoots
A reflection of their healthy roots
A lesson we can learn ourselves as nature abounds
New life and happiness towards each other resounds
Joy, Peace and Love are every good reason
To fully enjoy our cheerful new season
