Baxter Black JoinsPriefert Family

of Endorsees

LOOPS MAGAZINE • 5

riefert Ranch Equipment is extremely proudto welcome Baxter Black to its family of

Endorsees. Priefert will be partnering with Baxterto help bring his unique perspective and cowboybrand of humor to agriculturally related groupsacross the country, particularly those involved inthe cattle industry. Described by the New YorkTimes as “…probably the nation’s most successfulliving poet,” everything about Baxter is cowboy;his cartoonish mustache, his personality and hispoetry. As a much respected character in ourindustry, Priefert felt Baxter was a natural fit.

When asked for his thoughts about partneringwith Priefert, Baxter replied, “You’re known bythe company you keep. I found a friend inPriefert. It’s a third generation business that holdsthe values I think are what makes America great;God, country, family, hard work and caring abouttheir neighbor. It’s gonna be a pleasure to be partof what they stand for.”

Priefert is equally excited about theopportunity to work with Baxter. Jeff Rash, VP ofSales & Marketing had this to say, “Baxter Blackis well known to those who enjoy the Westernlifestyle and is a rare American treasure. I’vewatched and read Baxter’s material since I was aboy, and like many young aspiring cowboys frommy generation, Baxter’s wit, charm and valueshelped mold me into the man I’ve become. I’veridden with him in the badlands of Arizona, I’veworked cattle in the hot sun beside him and I’vegotten to know him as a friend, as well as amentor. They don’t make them like Baxteranymore, and it’s a true honor for our companyto be associated with a cowboy of his caliber.”

oe Beaver rolled through LaborDay Weekend with an event

that is surely going to be the onemany remember for 2012. The JoeBeaver 1st Annual Labor DayWeekend Jr. Roping was held inStephenville, Texas and was anaddition to an event of the sametype held this past spring. Thefirst was successful, the event inSeptember was outstanding.

“Man, it was good for the kids, paid good and there was goodcalves,” said Beaver. “And theyjust kept on coming.”

That they did. More than 400kids entered up to make a total of671 entries and 2,026 runs inthree days. This did not includethe new “King of Sling” 3DBreakaway roping that proved tobe an awesome event in itself. In

the end, the Jr. Roping event paidout $106,000 in cash, making thisevent one of the best for Jr. Calfropers anywhere.

The roping was a great success!Beaver added this event to what hestarted earlier this year and hopesto add a few more to his schedulein the next few years. Hoping toget a total of four events per year, all with this same type of actionand fun, Beaver wants to keepoffering events the future ropingstars of the sport can enjoy andhelp them become successful.

BUILT BY-CAM READY-DP CRX’D

ast month we talked about horseposition when roping.

This month I want to touch onsomething that is mostly overlookedin our sport and that’s athleticposition. Athletic position is havingyour weight distributed over theballs of your feet, knees slightlybent, back straight and head up. Inany athletic sport where you haveto move fast, this is the position youstart from. College and professionalathletes all know this.

If, while you were walking downthe sidewalk, a car suddenly veeredtowards you, you would naturally“break down” into this position tomove quickly. In our sport there arelots of guys who are naturallyathletic, and then there are lots who are not. In a sport where every hundredth of a second counts, it’s important to maximizeyour chances.

In the gym I work out on a Bosuball that looks like half a ball. Youcan stand on either side and it’swonderful for gaining balance. Iwork on my arms, shoulders andsquats all on the Bosu for thepurpose of agility and balance.

So many people don’t realize theimportance of athleticism whenroping calves. From the time you getoff your horse and until you throwyour hands up, you need yourweight distributed over the balls ofyour feet and to be in an athleticposition. We quickly dismount andrun as fast as possible on unevenground. There’s a lot of potential forinjury if you’re not physicallyprepared for it.

The best athletes in the world, professional football and basketballplayers, routinely work on footdrills and other exercises for balanceand coordination to increase theirperformance by even a mere two orthree percent. If it could increaseyour performance as much as fortypercent, would you not do this?

Guys who are naturally athleticmay not have to work at it. But Ibelieve anyone can improve theirperformance if they do. You can findthese exercises on the internet.

Footwork is very under estimatedand overlooked in our sport. If yourfootwork is right, your position willbe right. You will make far lessmistakes and your consistency will shoot through the roof. Nextmonth we’ll talk about position andthe dismount. This year I’ve been invited to

give a motivational speech at theNRS trade show at the MGM eachmorning at 9:30 a.m. I invite you all

to come if you are going to be in LasVegas during the finals. I would lovefor you all to send me some topicsyou would like me to talk about. Please email them to me [email protected] STS Ranch Wear will debut

during the NFR and we’re veryexcited. The feedback has been verypositive and overwhelming. Iabsolutely love the products. STSwill have a booth at the NRS trade

robably the most important question that we could ever ask is, “Why am I alive?” The Prophet

Jeremiah asked the following question in Jeremiah20:18: “Why was I born? Was it only to have troubleand sorrow, to end my life in disgrace?” (TEV). Forthousands of years people have asked this question,“Why am I alive?” It sounded like Jeremiah washaving a bad hair day when the scripture was written.Someone has said, “I hope life isn’t a joke, because Idon’t get it.” If we don’t see life from God’s perspective then

there are only three ways to approach life. None ofthem work, but they’re very popular.Mystical Approach – You find it in New Age books; a

lot of seminars; and it’s talked about on a lot of TV shows. You find it in movies like “The Matrix” and “Star Wars.”They use words like, “look within; look inside yourself; it’sa matter of introspection.” It’s kind of like, “Trust the forceLuke.” Somebody needs to stand up and admit that thisdoesn’t work. Because it doesn’t work. If this worked, wewould all know our purpose because we’ve done it. Myword to you is that you didn’t create it, so you can’t tellyourself what your purpose is.Self-Help Approach – They say you’ve got to make up

a purpose. We find these in many “self-help” books. Theysay things like, “consider your dreams, set some goals, figure out what you’re good at, aim high, go for it, bedisciplined, break your bad habits, believe that you canachieve.” Actually that’s quite good advice if you want to besuccessful, but being successful and knowing the purpose ofyour life are not the same thing. If being successful broughthappiness, why are there so many miserable wealthypeople?Philosophical Approach – In the philosophical

approach, the idea is that you speculate about the purposeof life. Get a pipe; get a latte from Starbucks, and thenhmmmm, “Why am I here?” What am I here for, where didI come from, where am I going? Then think about it. . .

As I was contemplating this, I realized why Godhas called sin, sin. I believe that sin is nothing morethan the created violating the plan and purpose ofthe Creator. If you want to know the purpose of athing, you don’t ask the thing. You ask the onewho created the thing. I have a lot of friends thatown businesses, we also have many employees hereat the church, from time to time I have people cometo me and say they just want to do it their way.Authority has been given to the creator of abusiness, the creator of an invention, and thecreator of man. Scriptures say that all things werecreated by God. ALL THINGS. The substance thatwe look at, whether it is a building, a computer, ora person, was all created by God. You and I werecreated for God’s glory, which means we werecreated for His purpose. We can do life man’s wayor we can do life God’s way. Frustration comes from not reading the

instruction manual to assemble a product. TheBible is the instruction manual for life. You canmake up your own and be miserable or read whatthe creator said about you and find peace andeternal life.

You really need to tryhorses out beforebuying. First, let the

seller ride it and show it. Letthem tell you all the informationabout the horse. See it go onceor twice, and then follow theinstructions on how to ride that particular horse when youget on.

But, before getting on thehorse, pay attention to see if thehorse is high or low maintenancein the corner; how it leaves thebox, does it have rate off yourhand or do you have to help itstart, does it follow the calfwhere it goes left or right, does itget there, does it run over calves,or just can’t get to the calf. Thenwatch the stop; is it too latestopping, pulls easy, is the calfeasy to flank, is the rope loose ortight when flanking or does itdrag the calf off. Watch for these

things on the ground beforeriding the horse.

“It’s hard to evaluate thesethings when riding the horse.”says Shane Steeves, calf horsetrainer/owner of 4REALhorsetraining.com.

Remember, typicallyyounger horses will havemore issues. Horses between4-7 years of age, their mentalsoundness depends on howmuch time they have got onthem. A 10-15 year oldseasoned horse should besound and cool.

“Look for the feel of thehorse to see if you and thehorse fit. A good feel meansyou get along with that horse. If you feel smooth, you feelcomfortable; you feelcomfortable, you feelconfident. Not a good feel, not a good fit.” says Shane.

If in doubt about a horse,it’s better to go ask areputable calf horse trainerthan your everyday roper forhelp. Some people are trainersand some people are just goodat roping. Remember, nohorse if perfect. Consider yourbudget, your ability and seekadvice from a professional, if in doubt.

Wow, what a month it has been.In my little office I get to seea whole lot of action. Not in

person so much, but I get a glimpse atthings over the internet, through myimagination from results and stories andfrom talking to people on the phone. Ihave to say, the past month has beenpretty exciting for calf ropers.

To start, Joe Beaver’s Jr. Calf Ropingevent must have been quite a show. Itsounds like young ropers from all acrossthe country showed up in Stephenvillefor the event. Joe B was very happywith the event and had lots of greatthings to say about it in a phoneconversation a few days afterwards. Hewas excited to see so many youngropers show up to compete and enjoyedsharing his time with the contestants atthe event.

Although the Jr. event was thehighlight, Joe B was also very excitedabout the results of the 3D King ofSling. This was the brainchild of bothJoe and Lanham Mangold and kind of atest run. Well, to say the least, the test

run proved positive. Not only did Joe Bhave lots of kudos for the King OfSling, Mangold was also energized bythe event. After talking to both ofthese guys, there is little doubt the 3Dformat was an enhancement to theevent. Both agreed that ropers of allages utilized the event to enjoythemselves, everyone of every caliberhad a chance to win money and it waswell accepted at the event.

As the Jr. event wrapped up, thenext big thing in the sport is theUSCRA National Finals. Althoughdetails are just now leaking into theoffice, the event no doubt shaped up tobe great. Lots of winning, lots of actionand tons of fun were well representedat the event. You can be sure to get allof the juicy details, results and photosin next month’s issue.

Lastly, now is the time of year we allstart turning our attention to who is inthe lead in the PRCA World Standingsand in the best shape going into theNFR. Well, if you havn’t noticed, ourfriend Justin Mass is in a pretty good

spot this year. Leading the charge andsitting in the number one spot with alead of about $38,000, Mass has sethimself up for a great chance at a worldtitle. Of course, it isn’t all said and doneuntil the final calf is roped in Vegas. Thelikes of Tuff Cooper, Cody Ohl, HunterHerrin, Cory Solomon who currentlyhold the top five positions in thestandings will be gunning for thechampionship as well. The remainingfield of ropers in the top 15 right nowincludes, Shane Hanchey, ClintRobinson, Matt Shiozowa, HoustonHutto, Fred Whitfield, Monty Lewis,Ryan Jarrett, Bradley Bynum, CliffCooper and Blair Burk. This field ofropers is all tough and will make theevent exciting to see.

Like I said, the excitement aroundthis time of year is unbelievable. Ienjoy the opportunity to get a chanceto be part of it all and thank all of youfor this opportunity.

Until next time, I wish each of you the best of luck at future events.
