THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when 5 strands of low stretch poly fi bers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today.

With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate.

6 • JULY 2010

Twenty-five years have comeand gone since the idea for“a special calf roping where

the young ropers of the countrycould all get together to showcasetheir talent” was put into motion. The names of the winners in thepast years read like a who’s whoof the present-day professionalcalf ropers. Putting together this“silver anniversary edition” offeredsome new challenges. Barry hadheart surgery in January, severalstates scheduled their Jr. HighState Finals the same week in Mayand, added to that, an alreadytough economy. It seems all thechallenges were met as 625 entriescompeted for a payoff of over

$62,000 plus saddles, ropingequipment, and a full line ofcowboy attire from hats to boots. As an added feature to this year’sRoundup, the voice of a talented, young announcer from Oklahoma,Garrett Yerrigan, was called uponto provide some entertainmentand professionalism for theRoundup. He did a great job andeveryone really enjoyed him.The Roundup started off with

the 13 – 15 Tiedown roping atnoon on Friday, with ninty-onecontestants. The first roper out,Dublin, Texas roper, AaronCalloway, was told by Barry hehad a great calf and he used himlike a pro, tying him in 9.08 to

win that go round. The fastest calfof this roping came in the secondgo when Stephenville, Texascowboy, Marty Yates, tied one in8.98 to win that round. In thethird round, Colby Jenkins, Call,Texas, made his move, tying hiscalf in 9.53 to win that round andtake over the lead in the Average. His fourth-place win in the shortgo gave Colby a 44.66 on four andthe championship saddle. As is tradition, Saturday

morning is time for the 12 &Under Tiedown. The first goround was won by Hondo Harris,Agua Dulce, Texas, with his 14.73,but Westyn Hughes, Caldwell,Texas, proved to be the man of thehour as he placed on every calfand won the Average with a56.15. Dublin, Texas cowboy, SyFelton, captured the short go witha rapid 12.68 to move from fourthto second in the Average. Thefastest calf of the roping wasturned in by Westyn Hughes withhis 12.28 in the third go round. While the little ropers are the

main event in the coliseum, the 13– 15 Breakaway ropers are turningin some quick times in the number2 arena. Pawhuska, Oklahomaroper, Tyler Milligan, started offhot by winning the 1st round witha 2.88 and then won second inround two with a 2.85. RyderGann, Tahlequah, Oklahoma, wonthe 2nd round with his 2.82. As hehas done in the past, Stephenville,Texas cowboy, Marty Yates, wonthe 3rd round with a rapid 2.45and then got even faster in theshort go with a 2.29 to win theround and take the Average withthe time of 12.83on four head.On Sunday we always start off

Kaity Beaty came into theshort go in the lead and sealed thedeal by winning that round with atime of 3.43 to take thechampionship. Her average time of12.68 will go into the record booksas the second fastest time in 25years of the Roundup.

His second-place time of3.33 in the short go gave him thevictory in the Average with a timeof 14.37 on four head. As afootnote to this event, it has to bementioned that seven-year-old,Cinch Moody, Stephenville, Texas, was one of the only twenty-onecontestants out of 103 entries thathad time on all three head prior tothe short round.

Monday, Memorial Day, bringson the fast and the furious 16 – 19Boys Tiedown Roping. Reese

Itwent down to the last roper todeclare the winner of roundnumber 2 as Heath Thomas,Hemphill, Texas turned in the timeof 8.81. Round number 3 is usuallywhen the fastest time of the daycomes but not this year. Tomball,Texas roper, Wes Wyrick, capturedthe round with his 8.68 which letthe 8.54 of Reese Riemer in roundnumber 1 claim the honor ofhaving the fastest time. While allthis had been happening, JustinParke of Gooding, Idaho had beenjust roping solid, putting short 10-second runs together. He cameinto the short go leading theAverage but all fifteen ropers wereseparated by only a little overthree seconds. The short go waswon by Pleasanton, Texas roperCody Lawrence with a 8.79 tomove him into the lead in theAverage. Justin roped his final calfin the solid style he had shown allday in the time of 9.18 for 3rd inthe round and 1st in the Averagewith a time of 39.58 on four head.A new Tod Slone Championshipsaddle and a pocketfull of moneymade the trip back to Idaho a lotmore pleasant.

As we bring another BB RopingRoundup to a close, a big pat onthe back goes to the Alpha GamaRho fraternity boys from Texas A & M Commerce and theirsponsor Dr. Flavio Ribeiro whomanned the stall office andprovided all the chute help. For agood roping the cattle are the mainingredient and a great job was doneby Mark Holder for the 12 & Undercalves and by Glen Robinson forthe calves for the other age groups.

With the tough economypresenting challenges on everycorner, a big Thank You goes outto the following sponsors whoreally make this roping a success:Ardmore Tourism Authority,Bailey Motors, Brooks-Maberry,Inc., Choctaw Casino & Resort,Cinderella Horses, Circle MTrailers, Diamond T Arena,

Brazile Pulls Off Double Win In Return ToCompetition At 50th Daines Ranch Rodeo Courtesy of PRCA

Trevor Brazile’s return to competition went just fine – evenif it did come a little earlier than planned.

He won the tie-down roping and paired with Patrick Smithto win the team roping at the 50th Annual Daines RanchRodeo in Innisfail, Alberta, over the June 16-20 weekend, earning $10,180.

He did all of this after trying to doctor release out of therodeo because his injured elbow still hasn’t healed to hissatisfaction and with virtually no practice in the five weekssince his last rodeo appearance.

“If I’d started another doctor release, I wouldn’t be able tocompete for 10 days, and I’d miss all the Fourth of July rodeos. My doctor actually told me to take another 4-6 weeks at home, but the pain’s no worse than it was, and it’s rodeo time.”

The big payday at Daines Ranch lifted Brazile’s seasonearnings total to $120,454, keeping him more than $56,000ahead of second-place Ryan Jarrett as he bids to win hisrecord-breaking eighth all-around world championship.

Brazile is also first in the tie-down roping world standings, sixth in steer roping and sixth among team roping headers.

A special thanks to my sponsors for supporting not only me, but also the sport that lets me do what I love.

Slaying Our Giants

here’s no doubt in my mind that my father would have been a world champion calf roper if he had chosen to make a career in rodeo. I have

a picture of him from the National Finals Rodeo inDallas where he was getting off on the right side andholding his slack. Obviously he was way ahead of histime. The most rodeos he made in any one year wasthirty-eight, and that’s back when most people went toall they could get to.

There were two things that kept him from being all that he could be as a roper or from winning world titles.

my family any more than my father did. To be thehusband and father I want to be, I need to have my family with me. As much as I love what I do, itwill never be as important as or deprive me of myfamily. Therefore, we travel in a ‘Toter Home’ which is basically like a NASCAR tour bus withliving quarters.

To excel at anything requires sacrifice of somekind. In the last year, by working with a trainer, I’veradically improved my strength and agility, none ofwhich came without sacrifice. Whether it’s giving upsome of my favorite food or the hundred plus sit-upsI do every day, it’s worth it for the improvement it’smade in me and my roping.

In the end, I won’t define my career by worldtitles, NFR qualifications, or money won. I will judgemyself by asking if I did everything possible to be thevery best I could be. To really evaluate my career, everything has to be taken in perspective includingthe adversities, wins, and losses. That’s what I use toevaluate myself and not by comparing myself toothers. I will have to know, without a doubt that Ileft nothing to chance and no stone unturned.

If you have giants you need to slay, go after themwith whatever you have. Even if it’s only a slingshot.

See you down the line and God bless.

A man who has friends must himself be friendly...

Proverbs 18:24 (NKJV)

M y son had a roping horse named Buster. This horse really wanted to be yourfriend. However, when Buster was in his

formative years he had several traumatic thingshappen to him. He was born and raised in Coloradoand as a young horse his owner took him elkhunting. During this hunt, his owner used Buster topack a large bull elk off the mountain. Buster gotspooked and ran off to the camp with this huge bullelk strapped on him. After that, in the next fewmonths, on two separate occasions bulls got himdown in the sale barn. Needless to say, Buster had avery traumatic childhood and as much as he wantedto be your friend he had trouble being friendly withstrangers, and occasionally even with familymembers. We learned to overlook many of Busters’faults because he really was a good horse.

Many times in our personal life we automaticallyshut out certain individuals that we form an opinionabout in thirty seconds. Forming an opinion soquickly causes us to miss some of the greatest gifts inlife; the relationships God blesses us with. You mayhave been burned on occasion, or have been donewrong (like Buster) and had a troubled childhood. Iwould like to encourage you to ask for God’s help toget you past the pain and keep your attitude towardsothers friendly. Not everyone still waves when youpass them on the road but it doesn’t mean that theyare not friendly. Not everyone appears friendlybecause they may have a little “Buster” in them. Soremember to give them a chance and show themhow to be friendly, by being friendly no matter howdifferent they may be from you.

Hot Summer Action

et Ready – Set – Go!Summer time is here and

for calf ropers, that means thefun has started and if you haven’tbeen to a rodeo, jackpot or USCRAevent yet – you are missing out. FromPRCA caliber ropers to those juststarting out in the sport, it is hittingits high for 2010 and some of thebest events of the year are justaround the corner.

Jr. calf ropers have to be countingthe days before this years 26thannual Roy Cooper WorldChampionship event that will behosted at the brand new Circle TArena in Denton, Texas. With thegreat turnout of the recent Barry BurkJr. event as well as the CarterRobertson event that wrapped up atthe end of May, things look good for

Jr. competitors who are planning toattend this year’s Roy Cooper event.

For ropers who have grown outof the Jr. divisions, the USCRA hasset the stage for another great eventover the 4th of July holiday. TheFirecracker 5-Header will be hostedat the Lonestar Arena inStephenville, Texas and will nodoubt be a hit among ropers of everycaliber. Not only is there a greatformat, but the early summer eventpays like a slot machine and TodSlone saddles will be up for grabs tothe Average winners of the EE, 00,#1 and #2 ropers of the weekend.

These are only a few examples ofthe great events that are on the calfroping schedule for the next month.I believe ropers really enjoy thesetypes of events. The bigger money, larger prizes and added excitementof these events make competitorsrise to the occasion and craft a

whole new attitude in the sport. Thatis what makes summertime so greatfor calf ropers.

It would be awesome to see moreof these type of events hostedthroughout the entire year. I knowthe jackpot events are important, andcreate a practice area, or a beginningplace for ropers, but if a large eventwas within driving distance everyother month or at least every quarter,I bet ropers would jump on thechance to compete in these biggerand more exciting events.

I believe the sport is ready for this step forward. Larger events, different formats, more prizes andmore excitement will generate moreropers and more events in the longrun – I guarantee it. The sport of calf roping is thriving and making amove to grow events and attractmore competitors is vital to future of the sport.
