About the conference In highlighting May is Mental Health Month, the Department of Mental Health is hosting our

15th Annual Conference on Mental Health and Spirituality: Looking over the Horizon on

Thursday May 26, 2016 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Age 15 is a special milestone for

the Latino young girls - that is known as quinceanera – and that is when they are presented to

society as young ladies. It is in this spirit of celebration that we recognize the challenges we

have overcome in the last years and the resolve to continue the systemic transformation that

our former Director, Dr. Southard had envisioned.

As a major change from previous conferences when we had local speakers, we invited notable

international presenters who could give us a preview of what might be happening in other

countries. We would like to know what could be beyond our own horizon. There will be three

Keynote speakers: His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang from India (Buddhist

perspective), Fr. Laurence Freeman, OSB from England (Catholic perspective), and Dr. Marvin

J. Southard (secular perspective).

There will be 6 workshops on mental health and substance use topics explained by 20 multi-

cultural persons from diverse faith beliefs and professions. They will explain some common

problems: why such things happen, how Western and Eastern methods of treatment are

effectively used, and how we could survive them.
