Looking Closely at Nature - Mirando la naturaleza más de cerca Introduction: This week you have materials to explore botany! Botany is the study of plants. You will get to draw plants and natural objects, build a terrarium, and more! A terrarium is a closed glass container that has living plants inside of it. You will also create art inspired by nature. The art you will explore is inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe. She was an artist in New Mexico who was active for over 60 years in the 20th Century. She looked closely at the world around her. Finally, you are going to learn a traditional summer camp skill, lanyard making. You can make a bracelet, keychain, zipper pull, or anything else you could imagine!

Introducción: ¡Esta semana tienes materiales para explorar la botánica! La botánica es el estudio de las plantas. ¡Tendrás la oportunidad de dibujar plantas y objetos naturales, construir un terrario, y mucho más! Un terrario es un recipiente de vidrio cerrado que tiene plantas vivas en su interior. También crearás arte inspirado en la naturaleza. El arte que explorarás está inspirado en Georgia O'Keeffe. Fue una artista en Nuevo México que estuvo activa durante más de 60 años en el siglo XX. Ella miró de cerca el mundo que la rodeaba. Day 1: Create a Terrarium - Haz un terrario Today you are going to create your own terrarium. A terrarium is a mini garden in a bottle. The water you add will stay in the container, evaporating and raining down on the plants. Hoy vas a crear tu propio terrario. Un terrario es un mini jardín en una botella. El agua que agregues permanecerá en el recipiente, se evaporará y lloverá sobre las plantas. Materials:

● Glass jar ● Small rocks ● Moss ● Seeds ● Water

Materiales: ● Frasco de vidrio ● Rocas pequenas ● Musgo ● Semillas ● Agua

How to construct your terrarium:

Step 1: Cover the bottom of your terrarium jar with the small rocks. You can keep a few to landscape the inside of the terrarium at the end.

Step 2: Put down a layer of moss. You can keep some for landscaping. Step 3: Add a layer of potting soil. Keep a small amount (2-3 tablespoons) of soil to sprinkle

on top of the seeds. Step 4: Now it's time to add your seeds. You can choose if you want to add grass seeds or

parsley or both. You have enough seeds to replant the terrarium 3-4 times. You should only sprinkle 20-30 seeds in the terrarium at one time. If you plant the parsley, you will be able to harvest and eat it. Sprouting should start in a week.

Step 5: Place any extra moss or small pebbles to landscape the terrarium. Step 6: Add about ½ cup of water and close the top. Place in a sunny window. Depending on

how dry the soil is, you might need to add an extra ½ cup of water. You should see water in the pebbles.

Cómo construir tu terrario:

Paso 1: Cubre la parte de abajo de tu frasco con rocas pequeñas. Puedes guardar algunas rocas para decorar el interior del terrario al final.

Day 2: Create a Backdrop and a Friend for the Terrarium Crea un fondo y un amigo para el terrario

Today you are going to find a pet rock outside who can live in your terrarium. You will also draw a backdrop. Where do you want your terrarium to look like it is? In space? At the bottom of the ocean? In a desert? It is your choice! Hoy vas a encontrar una roca afuera para que sea tu mascota y que viva en tu terrario. Make a Friend for your Terrarium: ● Ask your adult if you can go outside. Find a small rock that you

think would like to live in your terrarium. You can put it in the way it is, or you can add a face, clothes, and hair. Use plastic or permanent markers. If you use washable markers, it is wet in the terrarium and they will wash off.

Haz un amigo para tu Terrario: ● Pregúntale a un adulto si puedes salir. Encuentra una pequeña 

roca que creas que te gustaría que viviera en tu terrario. Puedes ponerla como es ya, o puedes agregar una cara, ropa y cabello. Usa marcadores de plástico o permanentes. Si usas marcadores lavables, el dibujo se borrará porque el terrario va estar mojado.

Create a Backdrop for your Terrarium / Crea un telón de fondo para tu terrario: Materials:

● Paper ● Markers or colored pencils ● Tape ● Scissors

Materiales: ● Papel ● Marcadores o lápices para colorear ● Cinta adhesiva ● Tijeras

Instructions:

● Cut a piece of paper that fits around about ⅓ of the back of the bottle. ● Draw a backdrop on the paper. You can draw anything you want!

Where would your pet rock friend like to live? ● Tape the backdrop to the back of the bottle.

Day 3: Looking Closely at Nature Mirando la naturaleza más de cerca

Today you are going to do a fun activity called Blind Contour Drawing, which is the process of drawing without looking as you draw. This exercise helps to develop hand-eye communication between what you see and what you draw. It also helps you look closely at an object and study the details. Hoy vas a hacer una actividad divertida llamada dibujo de contorno ciego, que es el proceso de dibujar sin mirar mientras dibujas. Este ejercicio ayuda a desarrollar la comunicación de mano-ojo entre lo que ves y lo que dibujas. También te ayuda a mirar de cerca un objeto y estudiar los detalles. Materials:

● Piece of paper ● Pencil ● Colored pencils

Materiales: ● Hoja de papel ● Lápiz ● Lápices para colorear

Instructions:

● Find an object from nature to draw. ○ This can be something you have in house, like a

house plant or fruit, or vegetable, or it could be something you see outside your window. If you would like to find an object from outside, ask your adult if you can go look for something to draw.

● Once you have your object, get your pencil and piece of paper ready to create a drawing.

● Place the pencil near the bottom of the page. ● Then looking at the edge of your object, begin to follow

the outline, going very slowly and steadily. Try to make your pencil follow every slight curve and bump of the object.

● Don't rush. Concentrate on observing every little detail. And DON’T PEEK!

How did your drawing turn out? Were there any surprises? Now add color to the drawing with your colored pencils. Instrucciones:

● Encuentra un objeto de la naturaleza para dibujar. ○ Esto puede ser algo que tienes en casa, como una planta o fruta, o verdura, o podría ser

algo que ves afuera de tu ventana. Si deseas encontrar un objeto afuera, pregúntale a un adulto si puedes ir a buscar algo para dibujar.

Day 4: Outside My Window Afuera de mi ventana

Georgia O’Keeffe often painted what was just outside her window. She loved New Mexico for it’s beautiful landscapes and expansive sky. Today you’re going to look out your window and create a drawing of what you see! Georgia O'Keeffe a menudo pintaba lo que estaba justo afuera de su ventana. ● Walk around your home and look out the windows and doors at the view. Which one would you like to draw?

● Get out you paper, pencil and oil pastels to create a drawing. You can draw what you see, or focus on one thing in the view, like a favorite tree or a cloud you find interesting in the sky.

● What colors are outside your windows? Sometimes Georgia O’Keeffe decided to change the colors from what she really saw and you can do that too!

Variation: What do you think it would look like if you were flying above the scene in your drawing? What would the difference be from this point of view? You could create a drawing from the bird’s eye view perspective.

Day 5: And now for Some Summer Camp Skills… Create your own Lanyard! Y ahora es tiempo para algunas habilidades de campamento de verano... ¡Crea tu

First, check on your terrarium… How does it look? Is anything growing? Add water if it is needed. Make sure your pet rock doesn’t need anything.
