Bangladesh Customs

1947

(1) The GATT raised various questions about Customs processes but there was no institution responsible for examining Customs issues

1948

(2) Thirteen European countries established a Study Group to examine the Customs issues identified by the GATT and this led to the decision to create an international Customs body

1950

(4) The Convention establishing a Customs Co-operation Council (CCC) was signed in Brussels

1952

(5) The CCC Convention entered into force on4 November 1952

1953

(6) The inaugural session of the CCC Councilwas held on26 January 1953with 17 founding Members

In 1994, the CCC adopts the name WCO

1994

Historical background

179* Members divided into 6 regions, responsible for processing 98% of international trade (* plus the European Union which, since July 2007, has rights akin to those of a WCO Member for matters falling within its competences as an interim measure.)

WCO COUNCIL All Member States are represented. Highest decision making body. Provides oversight and strategic direction for the Organization, meets annually

Policy Commission 30 members. Acts as a dynamic steering group to the Council, meets

twice a year

Technical Working Bodies Committees and Groups which study problems and improvements

of Customs techniques and legislation.

WCO Secretariat Responsible for the day-to day

running of the organisation. Together with the WCO Committees carries out the work included in the strategic plan,

Audit Committee 6 members. Undertakes management audits , meets once a year

Finance Committee 17 members. Provides support and advice to the Policy Commission and Council on budgetary and financial matters, meets normally once a year

Bangladesh accedes WCO on 1 July, 1978

Bangladesh Customs has a post of Permanent Representative (PR) since 1984 in Brussels with 2 supporting staffs.

The office is located in the premises of Bangladesh Embassy in Belgium

PR works as Minister (Customs) who reports to the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Belgium, EU and Luxembourg
